This was a fun idea for a video. I used to volunteer in a local Hospice charity shop and absolutely loved the interaction with donors and customers. I offered my services and started work at the same time as a new Manager arrived. She cleared out all the tat that had been hanging around for far too long and started being much more selective about what she took for stock, what went for eBay auction, what went for rags and what hit the bin. She did the pricing and displays with a couple of other volunteers while I manned the till. I found so many bargains as we all unpacked and sorted through the black sacks and cardboard boxes. Kids toys (a £40 game that was as near new as made no difference bought for £2), a pair of large table lamps complete with shades (which I still have many years later) still in their boxes with the original store’s Sale label of £40 reduced again by us to £20 then 50% off to shift them, so just £10 in the end, and too many CDs and books to mention. I pounced on a pair of pristine leather brogues for my significant other that were priced at £8 when he normally pays around £90-£120 for a pair. That particular donation from a lady whose husband had recently died in the Hospice the shop was raising funds for also included a beautiful bespoke navy wool overcoat with a Savile Row label. The only thing wrong with it was an inside button had come a bit loose. It wasn’t SO’s size, unfortunately, but it soon sold for £25 when it probably cost around £400 or more to have made. Although a house move had rather more to do with it, I used to say I had to leave in the end because I couldn’t afford to keep working there any longer! 😂 Treasures galore and the thrill of sniffing out a bargain. Can’t beat it in my book and you can actually get better at it. You’ll be skip diving before you know it ….. 😮
My mum basically lived out of her local charity shops. And she always found fantastic clothes and looked great. She also always made a point of taking the clothes she no longer wore back to the shops so somebody else could give them a try.
If Alanna had come shopping to most towns in South Yorkshire, the High Streets are full of charity shops, takeaway's, Poundshops, and a Greggs Bakery. They'd be a ghost town of closed up shops without them. Most well known stores have now moved to out of town retail parks.
@@brianwhittington5086 That sounds like a town near me in the midlands. There'a a little precinct which has an Iceland, a Greggs, a cheap sweet shop, a chippy, a hairdressers, a travel place along with an Age UK, an Air Ambulance. All before you get to the main street
My lovely Mum used to live in Scotland and when she came down to the Midlands to see me, she loved doing the rounds of the charity shops. She rarely went home empty handed! Her favourite shops were in the Cotswolds which was on the way to visit my brother in Wiltshire. ❤
The great thing about those hoodie jackets are you can throw them on to nip the corner shop to grab a pint of milk or bread, quick and simple. I have various different colours from Primark and they are just efficient and casual.
If you like 4 of 6 items, I'd say that was a win. With the other two, donate them to different shops lol. Choice here is much more limited. Close to me we have Value Village, Salvation Army and Goodwill. There's also Habitat for Humanity Restore Store but that is more furniture and home items. A good friend way back at school used to get some fantastic things in charity shops and we had great fun poking around them for hours. Thesedays, being conscious of price, and recycling stuff, I get pre-loved items on ebay, and have picked up some amazing bargains. Really enjoyed the vid and would love to see more bargain hunting!
I have a friend in Brooklyn NY that I did things with for several years before I learned that she always bought almost all of her clothes in thrift stores. She had made a habit of doing that. She knew several shops in Brooklyn and Manhattan and she visited them regularly whether she needed something or not. She felt she had a better chance to get something good if she often saw the "new" merchandise as soon as it came in. So I learned that one secret of successful thrift shopping is frequent browsing. Your adventure was fun and you got good things. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode.
Not sure if it's relevant but here it goes, Many years ago when i was attending a job club whilst unemployed looking for work we were set a challenge with just £10 each to go to charity shops 'thrift shops, if you like' to find clothes to wear for a job interview, just to prove you don't need great expense to find suitable job interview clothes. Well a few people come back with interesting attire which wasn't so suitable, one of the guys came out with his clothes looked like a member of the mob going for a job interview, which we all had a giggle at but some of us managed to pull it off interview clothes.
I have never bought clothes in acharity shop but I have bought classical music cds, dinning plates, beer mugs and other items in the shops. Gotsome great classical music CDs there.

I used to go to charity stores to buy records, but many now have a specialist volunteer who checks online prices. Nothing wrong with that, except that they then price them at the top of the market almost regardless of condition, so they're often overpriced. And it must be said that you have to wade through an awful lot of dross at most stores to find the small number of interesting records.

You can return items to charity shops, they allow exchanges, but will likely give you a credit note to use rather than a cash refund. It's only fair as you may buy more than one item, or something dearer & you're still contributing. Some charity shops are big businesses. - So don't feel you can't, 👌 You make my husband & I chuckle, ie. your face at the football supporters chants!😅 - (They can go too far sometimes mind you). We pretty all use the charity shops like the 30 ish we have in our town, every charity you can think of ...from St Johns Ambulance to the Cancer Trust and loads inbetween. My personal favourite is the Salvation Army furniture store (opposite our Morrisons)
I'm an old man (71) and have no problem with ripped jeans. I was rocking them myself 50 years ago. The difference is, I earned the distress. I didn't buy them pre-ripped.
Hear hear. Also there is no such thing as 'age approriateness' in colour choice or indeed anything else. You wear what makes you happy. If anyone else has a problem with that then that's a 'them' problem not a 'you' problem :)

Whenever I go into a town I always visit every charity shop and have a personal rule that I'm not allowed to leave unless I buy something. The lack of front pockets on the shorts would make them an instant no for me, the jeans I'd rule out as well because of the 'ventilation' (yes I'm an old git) since my legs tend to suffer from even slight chills. I have on occasion gone into a charity shop. Best thing I have bought was a Timberland leather messenger bad for a tenner!! I only had £30 in my bank account at the time but was to good to pass up! My mum had always looking and has picked up M&S things and wears them all the time! Well worth a look!
I love your striped jumper. I'm not usually a fan of ripped jeans but yours are a lovely shape and look gorgeous on you. Your t-shirt is nice and a great bargain ❤
I’m British and have been living in England my entire life and never heard anyone used the term “thrift” or “thrifting” it’s literally charity shops and that’s it.
Love the "T" Need more videos like this. I love going to thrift stores. I don't get clothes but love vintage other things. Tech, kitchen ware, Wall art.
I think a lot of those new clothes with the tags still in are where people buy them (often online) and then don't like them or they don't fit and they can't be bothered to work out how to return them so just drop them at a charity shop.
Never been thrifting, unless you count buying pre-owned video games from Game, so was really impressed by the quality of the clothes you managed to find. Nice to see you filming outside, makes one think longer warmer days are just round the corner, and hopefully more travel videos! 🙂
The mustard hoodie jacket, is a must for running out to bring in the washing, off the line when it starts to rain. My ex was forever using my work hoodie for that exact reason. ha ha ha If you've never been to a local church JUMBLE SALE/GOOD AS NEW . You've not lived.. They're awesome. You should look at all the church notice boards when passing.
I love charity shops and try and get clothes from there as much as possible. You can find some amazing outfits like that. I’ve even found a Jasper Conran coat like that. I think the oversized top is ok to throw on over things. For your first go I think you did great. Keep going. Maybe try washing the jumper by hand the first time
honestly for such a long time, had no clue what thrift shop or what thrifting even meant, I'd just call them charity shops and don't have a word for looking in charity shops. I volunteer in a charity shop and its usually quite nice and relaxed environment. met my closest friend also volunteering in a charity shop :)
As a bloke I can say you looked great in all the things you bought and they're not to long, the shorts will be perfect if we get a decent summer and you don't want pockets stuffed with rubbish spoiling the lines. Personally I've never bought clothing from a charity shop although I have donated loads, my purchases are usually household items such a 3 piece suites, table and chairs and kitchen appliances usually from BHF. Love your vids 🇬🇧
I can't be doing with stretchy/skinny fit jeans. I agree on the shorts. Also, do look weird with no pockets at the front. The distressed ones. Not something I'd wear, sometimes can look stupid, but don't look bad on you. Also, yeah, the whole "You've got holes in your jeans" was amusing like once or twice, in like the 2000s. People still doing that need to get past it. - Unless it's something that's more hole than material, then it's fair game. Tops... T-shirt, yeah. 'shacket' ... if it's comfy, maybe just keep it for just being at home when you kinda need that in-between level of warmth - like a regular shirt'd be too thin, but a full on jumper/hoodie'd be too warm. Or if you decide to take up adventure archaeology/palaeontology etc... Stripy jumper is nice. and not too 'Where's Wally'-ey. Actually kinda works with those jeans - which I typed literally as you said that. lol Oh yeah... hoodie's fine too. nice mustard yellow too. What was the price on the original label for the shorts btw? also: plug sockets on the train? Oooh, fancy! also-also... we're really gonna overlook the fact that you said "50 cents"?
The quality of the stuff in the charity shops varies hugely from city to city depending on who lives there. Affluent areas like Cheltenham or Knutsford have lots of wealthy people living in them so they give away really high quality stuff. Of course the best items get skimmed off and sent to London to be sold in the high end charity shops in places like Chelsea.
The teal t-shirt and mustard hoodie are winners - great colour choice and suit you. The jean shorts c-rapped out by not having front pockets and the distressed jeans waist to (everyone's favourite word coming up....) crotch ratio looked whacky, but that's the cut, not the model! Thrift challenge is a good idea as it's a great cause and applaud trying new things - especially with the camera. BEST DEAL OF THE DAY has to be that Cornish pastie!! I'd have blown the budget for the whole shoot in the pie shop. A dead cert next time I'm on that side of Kent!
I still shop charity shops and online clothes recycling websites. Often clothes are brand new. I used to go to a very nice area in Essex with lovely charity shops and picked up some designers suits in the 1980’s for a ridiculous price. All for clothes recycling! ❤
I used to be a bit shy about going into charity shops but I went in with my mum one day and I spotted a brand new pair of Versace jeans for a tenner. Needless to say I aint shy anymore lol. Altho the charity shops in the west end of Glasgow where I live charge crazy amounts.
Just in terms of production, I really enjoy anything vlog-style on your channel, your glances at the camera when filming yourself out in public are more engaging and endearing than awkward, and your voiceover on this flowed really well, I don't know if you had to edit the commentary much but if you did, it was really seamless. I enjoyed the whole video and I now want a cornish pasty as a matter of some urgency 🤤
Honestly, there are some great charity shops. But if you go loads, you will realise where to go and where is a bit pricier. I have three favourite shops, so if I am out and about I will mainly go to them! Sometimes the prices are a bit more expensive, but that will be in more popular areas and towns.
That was definitely different but a whole lot of fun. I think the jeans and jumper combo suits you very well. The shorts were indeed a bit odd but you can't win 'em all. At least you had a fun day out!😀👍
The staff of a charity shop know well what sells: that faux fur lilac coat was on that dummy with a bag and others for a reason. We once had a leopard-print dress, and a leopard-pattern bag, put them on a half-dummy in the window together: gone in seconds; same with a tidy modern artist's easel, and a couple of tall pyramidal glass ornaments that cast rainbow reflections. These things can be marked up, too. Just depends on the town's perceived class.
Yes to motion sickness. New trains on Merseyrail have most of the seats facing the wrong way into Liverpool and the right way travelling out. I thought it was getting better travelling to see a friend in the lakes but Avanti between lancaster and Preston with close seats wrecks my head 😢
I used to volunteer in a shop & loved it - never a dull moment! The stuff people donated was fascinating. We had a huge stack of military models donated one day. The manager wanted to sell them as a job lot. I asked if we could sell them separately. In the space of 6 hours on a Saturday, we made over £500 from these models alone. It was all middle-aged men who were dragged in by their wives & partners that bought them, with some spending £50+ at a time on these models. I'm in my 50's, and whilst I enjoyed volunteering, there, I can't stand it when I get dragged around these shops.
Nothing wrong with charity shops , agree with you the t shirt , hoodie , striped jumper and jeans looked good on you. You should do it again sometime 👍
I wish we had charity shops here in Croatia. There are one or two secondhand clothes shops but it is usually about 80% womens clothes and I'm a man. For me the advantage of secondhand is that the quality is often higher than the stuff they make today. I still wear M&S stuff I got in the '80s whereas new stuff is often falling to bits after a few months.
If I had those shorts, I would wear them underneath short summer t-shirt dresses, or loose short dresses that would get blown in the wind (à là Monroe), as the stretchy material would create a smooth layer underneath, unlike other denim shorts.
Well that was fun Alanna, I hope you had a great time making this weeks video. It just goes to show what you can find out there if you look. You will have to do it again sometime and maybe bag yourself a pair of shoes and maybe a dog too. Also FYI Ladies size 6 shoes are size 4 UK/36EU. 😊
Shoe sizes: men's average size varies from 8, to about 10. Simply try on a few. You might also see European shoe sizes, so try a few and make a note... My feet are about 8, and 8.5, simply one is larger than the other. Some shoes fit well, some only one does. So sizes vary between manufacturers.
Hi Alanna ( hope that's spelt correctly) 21:23 your hips are in the right spot it's the jeans that are wrong. I think that as men an women have different shapes jeans and trousers are tailored differently .
This old man found a Keil Kraft 'Ace' balsa flying model kit in a charity shop. The rubber was too old, but it sold for more than twice what I paid for it. Specialist knowledge matters, whether it's clothes, or... handbags.
Another great video! I'm a mid 30's guy and I love charity shops, I don't care about what's fashionable today, I like finding vintage / unusual stuff to wear (found a great dark brown leather jacket for £25 the other day!), they're also great for books / DVD's / Blu Rays (yes, I am one of those odd people who still buys physical media! 🙂). Happy hunting on future trips to these fine establishments!
How can you have been in the UK for 7 years and not used Charity Shops? I love them. I didn't actually know that's what you meant when you kept saying 'thrifting' as it's not a word I think of related to charity shops. Your £25 regret jacket was very expensive for a charity shop, but your other purchases were great. The mustard yellow really does suit you. Ripped jeans, wow, you survived a wolf attack and you're still smiling! 🐺🐺🐺🤣🤣

The t-shirt is a yes, thats how to wear a t-shirt, the hoodie thing is a big yes, that looks really nice, keeps your butt warm in the winter!
I’m British and have been living in England my entire life and never heard anyone used the term “thrift” or “thrifting” it’s literally charity shops and that’s it.
It's an "over the pond" thing!
Thanks so much! 🙏
Your right , some shops sell dvds /CDs and games cheap as well. 👍
I did my bachelor's degree in Canterbury, many years ago. Not been back in ages (I live overseas now), so it's nice to see how it's changed
I know how hard it can be filming one self outside. Think you did good. Love the mustard top.
The Cornish Bakery in Canterbury opened in September last year .... Cornish Pasties are wonderful ...
Wow that's older than I thought!
Brit humour : avoid the cornish pastry & the danish pasty.
The mustard hoodie jacket, is a must for running out to bring in the washing, off the line when it starts to rain.
My ex was forever using my work hoodie for that exact reason. ha ha ha
If you've never been to a local church JUMBLE SALE/GOOD AS NEW .
Keep going. Maybe try washing the jumper by hand the first time
ooo I'm a Kentish girl - Rochester is a good place to find vintage and charity too... Canterbury is good too - lots of shops.
Hi Alanna, 50p for a t-shirt ! A great day's work - let's hope no-one else finds out or the shop will have to get bouncers on the door.
Thanks for showing us the Charity Shop thrifting.. I would be lost without a Size list to shop with.. Fun video.. Understand lack of front pockets...
The shorts and tee look great again, for a pub luch in the summer sat outside in the sun with a cold beer x
Jumper goes quite well with those jeans👍👏👏👏👏👏
honestly for such a long time, had no clue what thrift shop or what thrifting even meant, I'd just call them charity shops and don't have a word for looking in charity shops.
The teal T shirt, and mustard hoodie looked wonderful together! I have to admit though: I'm an old guy so the distressed jeans - ah no. :)
Bakery top choice.....and a pasty totally top choice excellent food selection me thinks
My sister bought a lot of designer clothes in charity shops Dior YSL etc for very cheap prices
Great video A! I love op shopping 🛍️🛒 and good to see you trying new things 😌
Motion sickness is horrible!
Thank you!!
I always walk through the train to another carriage with the seats facing the right way.
Really enjoyed your fun and different video - thanks for sharing
The stripe jumper and jeans look lovely on you. I love looking in charity shops.
I absolutely love thrifting and antique shopping. Going to try some estate sales this year. Always something interesting waiting to be discovered! ❤
That was definitely different but a whole lot of fun. I think the jeans and jumper combo suits you very well. The shorts were indeed a bit odd but you can't win 'em all. At least you had a fun day out!😀👍
Yay! Thank you!
You're welcome 😁
I hear ya! Can't travel backwards either.🤢
Charity shops are great places
For value in the UK, for some clothes
Designer polo t-shirts sometimes
Good video 👍
If I had those shorts, I would wear them underneath short summer t-shirt dresses, or loose short dresses that would get blown in the wind (à là Monroe), as the stretchy material would create a smooth layer underneath, unlike other denim shorts.
Last outfit combo was cute❤❤
Well that was fun Alanna, I hope you had a great time making this weeks video. It just goes to show what you can find out there if you look. You will have to do it again sometime and maybe bag yourself a pair of shoes and maybe a dog too. Also FYI Ladies size 6 shoes are size 4 UK/36EU. 😊
Thank you!
Excellent thrifting Alanna, especially the last £5 jumper - that really was a bargain, and it really suits you.
As a Brit, when you said 'thrifting' I thought: 'Who he?'You can take the girl out of Canada....;-)
hey great video! I would love to know where you got your jacket you are wearing while you were traveling for the video!
I think that as men an women have different shapes jeans and trousers are tailored differently .
my sister used to shop in Charity shops in Hythe in Kent several times she bought named designer dresses Dior YSL etc.
This old man found a Keil Kraft 'Ace' balsa flying model kit in a charity shop. The rubber was too old, but it sold for more than twice what I paid for it.
Specialist knowledge matters, whether it's clothes, or... handbags.
love the hoodie
Hope this video does well I enjoy seeing random footage of being out and about exploring
Excellent video Alana I hope you do more outdoor stuff 👍😀😀😀🚜
You look good in every thing
Cool, what a relaxing video to watch, Alanna. Cheers from the Pacific West Coast of Canada.
