      This reminds me of when I got an x wing in 2007 it broke sometime in between then and recently but I found my 2012 x wing unbuilt, so I built it and I was having this childlike moment of me making sounds and flying it around so fun

    Oh man... I used to have so much fun playing with this set back in the day. After I finished playing Star Wars: Rogue Squadron on my N64, I would then turn to my LEGOs; sometimes I would reenact the missions from the game, sometimes I would make up my own missions. Good times...

    • @finkamain1621
      @finkamain1621 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL I did the exact same! The sets back then came with less figures so I used battle droids and bounty hunters for the Rebels and the clone troopers for the Empire!

    It's a bit more... lego-ey. You know what I mean, classic lego.

      +Hatted Sandwich I think they've simplified their sets too much, too many single specialized pieces that in the past would have been built up from smaller pieces.

    I had this... best Lego X-Wing ever produced. Simple, lots of play features. Awesome.

    Thank you to everyone who noticed the wrong helmet for Luke, and my apologies for not catching the mistake. This set is from that huge April Bricklink haul and the list of missing or wrong parts I've encountered from that one order is already a page long. Even this set here also had other issues originally, including a non-LEGO part and the wrong lightsaber. This, from an experienced seller who specializes in Star Wars. Positively infuriating.

    • @JANGBRiCKS
      @JANGBRiCKS  9 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      ***** I disagree. If I bought this cheap from a garage sale or a "selling my grandson's LEGO toys" eBay auction, I would expect missing & wrong parts. When I buy at collectors' market prices from a professional LEGO reseller who does this for a living and has certified his/her sets 100% authentic, complete, and correct, I expect to get exactly what was described. One or two missing or wrong pieces every now & then is acceptable. The systemic negligence of so many of today's highly-rated professional sellers is unforgivable.

      JANGBRiCKS Agreed, if someone resells for a living, some extra attention is expected to say the least.
      BTW, i'm not sure if they used that on several kits, but i believe that helmet with blue crests belongs to Dak Ralter from the Snowspeeder set. Biggs' helmet printing looks amazing though :)

    • @CrescentLuma
      @CrescentLuma 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NagaTen The blue crested helmet was used in the snow speeder set for sure, as I have it, but yea I don't know if it was used in any others. If I remember right, the y wing had a helmet more like the other print in this set, and the A wing had a helmet that was a completely different style

    When you get down to it, this is a perfect Lego X-Wing. The scale is good, the build is simple and satisfying and it really looks like it’s made out of Lego while not being crude!

    I got this when it came out. I was nine by then and I guess this was one of my first encounters with classic Star Wars at the time. I loved this set in and out, saw endless battles against vaders tie and the sith infiltrator, side by side with the original Y- and A-Wing. I should have the manual and the pieces somewhere in my parents attic. Almost Twenty years, my god

  • @yorgle
    @yorgle 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I'm sure it's because of Lego's inability to invest lots of money in development of new pieces back then, but I love that pretty much the entire line used standard (for the time) pieces. Darth Maul's spaceship for example was super blocky. none of the curved slopes that we have now... I think that adds to the charm of the entire line. I love it! (And I also love that i think every set in the line used that 1x8 round gun piece (30359) in different ways. very fun!)

      They just hadn't invented those yet. The larger cannon thingies that existed then can't fit there. Then the flick missiles came but they sucked. So they weren't trying to make them child friendly as they are TOYS for kids.

    Back in 1999, this set got me interested in the Star Wars series. Being only 10, this was my first access to the universe. The X-Wing was kept together for a good chunk and I played with it with the Naboo fighter, not understanding that could never happen.
    It also inspired many Space fighter MOCs, which I continue today. Thank you for checking this out.

    I remember when this set came out. I was calling my local Target everyday waiting for them to be delivered. When they finally came in, I drove down the street on my lunch break to buy the set. I was never a big fan of Lego before, and the Star Wars Legos is what turned me into a big fan of all things Lego.

    I was a kid in the 1970s with the original Star Wars, and so when this set came out, there was a lot of excitement about the continuation of the story. I bought this set back in 1999 and it did break apart easy, and eventually pieces were lost. Thanks for sharing Jang.

    This set has a special place in my heart. I remember being nine years old when it came out. I was already a huge lego kid, so when they got the licence for Star Wars I was very stoked. I remember the back pages of the instruction booklet had the additional models, and did run around the house with my lego lightsaber dueling an imaginary Darth Vader! Thanks for the memories, great video.

  • @postbeast21

    This set was a dream come true for me. As a kid, I was of course a huge Star Wars fan and always tried to build an X-Wing (and other Star Wars craft) from my own LEGOs...so when this was introduced in my late 20's, this set alone got me back into LEGO! And I have not turned back! Thanks for a fun review Jang!

    I Loved that LEGO would add ideas for other ships that could be made from a set... Something they haven't done enough of lately. Kids learn creativity and improve their imagination power from having enough bricks to do something else, not just putting together the set by the directions. Encourage kids to modify as much as possible a set, especially if they see some weakness in it (like strength issues in some of the new sets).

  • @boswcheydoesart1314
    @boswcheydoesart1314 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have to agree. A very historically significant model. And just the idea of how many alternate builds they suggest are so awesome to me. Me personally, because my custom-building hobby with LEGOs revolves highly around "how many different things can i build out of this one?" kind of a thing. Really cool, really nicely put together, and a very successful step for LEGO!

  • @tatsuyah4695
    @tatsuyah4695 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I remember this! I had this! Oh, man, I wish I was serious about keeping my models intact back then so I could stand it next to my newer X-Wing.
    Note to anyone wondering: Luke's helmet in the vid did not come with this set. He had a helmet with the red symbols like it was shown on the instruction booklet. The blue symbol helmet goes with Dack who was in the original Snowspeeder set.

    Love to see some older sets showcased, as I’ve only recently began exploring the world of LEGO and specifically LEGO Star Wars.
    Especially sets like this one, that hold qualities that stand up still today, considering how much better the recent releases are in detail and realism etc.
    As I said, great to see things showcased from when I was only a kid, and unable to buy LEGO myself, and didn’t really ever see much that I thought held true to the Star Wars aesthetic anyway. This set however shows a good attempt at capturing that Star Wars quality, early on in the lines development.
    Thanks Jang! Keep up the excellent production. Look forward to seeing all your videos.
    Also I liked the comparison between Hasbro and LEGO (Poe’s x wing specifically was what I saw), and think it is a good idea to show how LEGO compares to other toys, in quality, realism / aesthetic etc, and it was interesting that you properly explored the manufacturing and design decisions that were influenced by standards and quality requirements for various reasons.

    I remember reading about this set in the Lego club magazine. I wanted it even though I didn't get into Star Wars until 2002. The day after I first saw episode IV, I got my latest issue of the Lego club magazine and they were advertising the re-release of this set. I wanted it even more then. Funny thing about Lego X-wings is that they are all 100% accurate. The X-wing's shape lend itself well to reproduction in Lego form. The 2012 one is the best, with this one close behind. I wish Lego would do another Biggs minifigure.

    I always wanted this as a kid, and nearly twenty years later I finally got it. It's so clunky by modern Lego standards, but it's nostalgic for me. I think my favourite part was looking through the instructions. I had forgotten about the cute comics they'd have at the back. Anyway, the set itself is really nice. I think it's aged pretty well. I prefer the light grey to the newer models built primarily with white pieces. I love the little utility vehicle that comes with it, and it's nice to have a mechanic. Tiny little complaint is the front lander is very fragile. I wish it was a little sturdier. Oh well. Still a fun build.

    This was the first lego set I remember building, I got it for my 6th (Was it really? Wow, hard to believe) birthday, and I got up at 5 am (or something obscenely early) just to build it. I remember Dad coming down the stairs right as I was putting the engines on.
    Set wise, there are some things I really liked about some things, especially the hatch on the nose, I wish they used that piece more often. The comics at the end were a very nice touch, though I never really did anything with the alt builds.

    Also, you don't see much of a use for that rear landing gear piece in many of the other Star Wars sets, and it fits well with this one. I think the only other set I can recall that uses that piece is the original Slave I

    Loved the review! This was one of my first Lego sets as a kid. I think I was 5 years old and I had just seen my first Star Wars movie (The Empire Strikes Back) during one of those Christmas TV marathon showings of the original trilogy, so I was big time into the new line of Star Wars Legos. I also got the original Y-Wing and Darth Vader's TIE Fighter. Still have these Legos back home in my closet. When I'm done with college I'm gonna pack them up and take them to my apartment. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Part of the reason I love flying and am trying to be a pilot in the Air Force is my love for the X-Wing Starfighter.

    Is he not gonna talk about how it’s grey though. It’s so weird it’s like a tie.

    Holy mother of all bricks! The alternative builds are awesome, almost more so than the main build (and I love X-wings, even used them as inspiration for a MOC fighter)!

    Maybe it's nostalgia talking, but this particular set is probably the one that's aged the best out of all the classic Lego Star Wars sets. It's not nearly as close to a perfect representation of the ship itself as others have been, but you get the impression that it was never trying to be. It's Lego-fied in spirit, as well as construction. About the only things I don't like about it are the strange printed tiles they threw in odd locations (the ones with the Rebel Firebird on them) and the faces on the figures. Luke specifically... Why does he look so grim?

    Better than today's x wings.

      I agree just for the light gray color.
      Recents X-Wings are way more stronger and realistic, except for their white color.

    Haha, wow... This takes me back. I had this set plus the Y-Wing with TIE Advanced. I haven't seen this set since early 2000's. Man! Looks so dated! But this is where it all began for Lego and Star Wars! Good nostalgic video!

    On the box for the 2006 B-Wing there is a suggested build for the Outrider which was Dash Rendar's ship from Shadows of the Empire.

    the bigger sets from 1999 had comics and alternative builds in back of the instructions..Would be pretty nice for Lego builders if they would do that again, just like little extra bonus to the sets to

    This set was one of my first lego sets, I was around 4 or 5 when i first got it and now, 22 years old, i've been going through my old legos that have now been passed down to my brothers and recreated most of the old sets, like the 2000 A-Wing and the B-wing with Command post. It was a surprising when i compared my B-Wing with the newer version and see how tiny mine was in comparison

    This was my second lego star wars set that i got back in my high school days. I remember wanting to get the ucs version of this in 2000 but the price was too high. Here i am 18 years later having bought the 2013 ucs x-wing about 3 years ago, and I came to appreciate how much of a kick starter this x-wing had on the lego star wars line.
