    The name you’re looking for, for that that kind of tool, is undercoat stripper. It’s commonly used with dogs to pull out loose hair, or as kind of a cheat method to achieve a hand stripped look on Terriers. Each blade is curved, and only sharp on the inside, with the spacing determining how much coat comes out. It looks as if you’ve got a 10 blade there, which would be medium/coarse or an 8-blade (Coarse). One popular brand is Mars Coat King.

    Matt please stop being so hard on yourself, you are trying to help him because you love him and care about his health. Being he is such a large horse it might be a good idea to have 2 pair in case the one starts to get warm. Evidently they didn't explain how they clipped him and you were just learning with him. He looks fine, and I'm sure you'll figure out the mane. He is such a beautiful horse.

    Matt and Jesse's horses are fortunate to be well cared for and loved so much. I do not understand when and why mane's have been given that "bowl style" look. A natural mane can be thinned, also, and looks great. This blunt, short clipping is what I call a 'bad hair day', as a retired Cosmetologist and horse lover/owner. I just don't understand. Seriously, when and why did that begin?

    • @youngblasarius

      agreed- the horse looks like a bit of a doofus with his hair this way. it started because matt already has another PRE, Emporio, whose mane he does maintain at length. he keeps Sureños mane short because he didn’t want the upkeep of two long manes.... although personally i would also like to see Sureño’s mane long and luscious as well :)

    I am a dog and cat groomer and a horse owner. Look up "Mars Coat King" you want the triple size and I would buy the kind that has the widest space between the curved blades. Once you do a little research you will understand what I am talking about. You may also look into a Slick Easy if you don't already have one. For his head I would switch to a Whal clipper that takes a 5-in-1 cliper blade. You will be shocked at how quite they are. Also look into Best Shot Shampoo and Conditioner (any of their products are awesome for thick coats) Both horse and dog show people use it when they are trying to deshed or comb out the undercoat. If he has sensitive skin I would also mix in Eqyss Microtek shampoo when shampooing or give him a good spray with their leaving in spray after. I have been a groomer of dog for 15 years and I have not found anything I like better than these products!!!

    He looks great, so handsome and strong! Thank you for the tips on trimming the mane. I needed some guidance because my horse despises the process. When I clip, I use two clippers, so that one can cool while I continue clipping. I also use new blades each time. I know it sounds excessive, but it really cuts down on the frustration factor. I also probably don’t have to clip nearly as often as y’all.

      Use a small clipper with a#10 blade with his head. Sometimes stuffing something soft in the ears helps. Good luck,in 3 days it won’t be so bad. Oil,clipper spray a big can of diesel to dip the clippers and a bunch of old towels.After his bath spray him all over with show sheen. Don’t know what it’s called over there but it makes an incredible difference in how easy it is to do the clipping. Also for your own comfort especially when the coat is a bit longer a pair of overalls buttoned up to the top with rubber bands around your wrists Will make life a lot more comfortable.

      Changedma Name not entirely true. Yea I think he clipped a little too early in the season, but when it is colder and he works hard and starts to sweat w/ a long coat that means after he is done working and his long hair is wet he can get chilled b/c it takes longer to dry. Just like how in humans for example; say you drench your clothes in water and then stand out in the cold wind. You are going to be colder for longer as your clothes stay wet even if your skin dries. I hope that make sense :)

    the way to avoid some of those lines and jagged edges is to do one long continuous line from the tail - back - ears without stopping or pulling the clippers away from the skin. then start again halfway covering your first line, from the tail- back-ears and so on so fourth so that you are always overlapping 1/2 of your previous cut, and there wont be any change in direction so the clipper blades will just run smooth from head to tail. when you start getting into the flank area, run the clippers opposite of the hairline, but still in one long line. the less times you lift the blades off the skin, the less jagged the end result will be. - ex dog groomer here/ current horse groom

There is one exception though, only one. Please forgive me. I hate that chopped off mane with a passion! I understand that the long mane is a tremendous amount of work. I understand that you are very busy. I understand that he is your horse and you can obviously do whatever you like with him. However, it's as if you are Delilah stealing Sampson's strength and spirit away when you keep that mane so short, instead of that magnificent long flowing mane he once had. I know you are probably sick to death of unsolicited critiques. I think this is the only slightly negative one I've ever left. I might have said something when you first chopped it off. I don't remember. I know I was thinking it, but this time I just had to say it. Lol I feel better now. 😉 I sincerely hope you aren't offended.

    you gotta spray the blades with cool blade - it cleans and cools the metal down so you dont have to wait so long, you just dip/spray and wipe every minute or so

    OMG the first view of him at 1:33 is gorgeous!!! He looks wonderful. Matt at 6:03 why did you say terrible idea? He looks great and it will make it easier to cool him out and keep him clean. Was a bit uptight by his head. My guys are like that too, but are getting better and better from me just working on that every day. They seem to slowly chill over time. The lines will disappear, no worries.
    You need some clipper spray to help your clippers run cool!! GET SOME, A NECESSITY!
    7:51 BEAUTIFUL! Don't sweat it. Looks awesome!!! IF you don't finish today, no worries, finish when you get back from your trip. Maybe good let him chill and then more practice for him.
    Here's when to use clipper coolant and clipper oil:

    Use clipper coolant regularly as you clip. Check every 10 minutes or so. If your clipper blades need cooling or are gooped up with hair, the spray of the coolant can clean things up for you and cool things off.

    Use clipper oil before you start clipping. Reapply every 5-10 minutes as you are clipping. Definitely clean, dry, and oil your clippers before you store them. For more on cleaning and storing, read this! There’s also a handy cleaning and storing video below.
    www.proequinegrooms.com/tips/clipping-your-horse/when-use-clipper-coolant-and-when-use-clipper-oil
    Always used to clip the horses and just keep them adequately blanketed in winter. It was a great idea! Yo will be glad you did this.
    15:04 I got one of those tools at Tractor Supply Co in the cat section for grooming my cat. Works great getting the undercoat out. Never thought of that for the mane. Easier on the horse than pulling with a pulling comb. Neat trick! Awesome tip!!
    I don't think you went too short. Love it!! Much, much better. 😊
    19:27 would be a great pic to frame. He looks absolutely magnificent. Nice shot of you both. I knew you would be happy you clipped him. Maybe some cold hosing would take the swelling down? Thanks for the leg update. Progressing nicely. You make a nice pair. Hope Emporio doing well also.

    Clippers always over heat, but if you can get a guard on the clipper it helps. Another way is to put ice on the blade to cool it off.

  • @jenniferbeyer6412
    @jenniferbeyer6412 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The best way to deal with thick lanes is to PULL it. When done right the horse won't feel it and you get a thinner mane tha5 will lay flat. And be easier to braid if you want to.

    Hot blades, just use clipping oil or lubricant spray. Liveryman has great stuff. Lines are either from blunt blades or pressing to hard. Let the clipper do its job and just glide. Super time consuming job, but he looks super handsome

  • @georgiaannbicknell6129
    @georgiaannbicknell6129 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Matt: Your clipper blades need to be sharpened if it is leaving streaks. New clipper blades and oil on the blades to keep them well lubricated also helps. They make a spray clipper oil that cools the clipper blades. You might look for this too. All that hair in your clothes when you are clipping is not fun.

    Is there a reason you clipped Sureno's mane instead of keeping it longer but Didn't do this with Emporio's mane? Is it because of his skin or did you just prefer the shorter mane.

    Skin issues are very often linked to an unbalanced digestive system. I'm sure you're doing everything for him and to have his diet perfected but is he getting any probiotics? For example a product called VITAL Probihorse has helped A LOT of horses with similar skin issues.

    Whyyy a 'bowl cut' it looks so unnatural and choppy? I don't understand the appeal. In the UK we have a thing called a 'solo comb' which can be used just like a pulling comb but cuts the hair rather than pulling it, but gives the pulled neat look
