I keep playing this scene over and over again. No EFX, no pyrotechnics, no touchy-feely dialogue. Just good solid writing, casting, directing and camera work. The key ingredients for a great scene.

I stumbled across this movie by accident a few years ago, looking for a horror film. My oh my what a pleasant surprise. I laughed my butt off for nearly the whole movie. Such a fun and delightful visit to psycho-town. And since they're psychopaths, it's nearly impossible to anticipate their next moves. But it all makes sense after the fact. Kind of. Very under-rated movie. I don't hear people talk about this ever.
This scene makes me giggle because it's written in the script like a badass guy voicing deadpan defiance to a confused goon, but the actors deliver it more like two strangers having a mutually confusing encounter. Like Walken wandered into a Wendy's looking for tax prep services and they're both just befuddled.
Can you put into words what makes it good? I love this movie but everytime I watch it i feel like the dialogue is objectively bad at times.... but I still love those parts all the same
It's been a long, long time since Christopher Walken wasn't simply playing Christopher Walken in whatever role he's in. Funny thing is, where as that would become tiresome schtick with any other actor no matter how good they may have once been (ex: Al Pacino), with Christopher Walken it still always works and is very arguably the strongest possible character choice he could have made.
To provide a bit of context for those who haven’t seen it: SPOILERS Walken’s character has a pretty strong death wish because the villains already murdered his wife. He wants to die, but also wants to hurt the mobsters as much as possible on his way out AND stall them to save his friends. That’s why he acts like this. Not to say Christopher Walken wouldn’t respond like this anyways, but the character is a bit more grounded.
I seriously just love coming back to this scene over and over just to analyze the power dynamics at play here. Christopher Walken's character basically holds all the power despite not being the one with a gun, snd it's all due to rhe fact that his nonchalant, unphased reaction isnt what the other guy was expecting.
Roger Ebert once reviewed a movie and said this, "... Harry Dean Stanton guarantees a movie will at least be interesting." I feel the same way about Christopher Walken.
