bruh… hosting the Olympics at QSAC would be more embarrassing than Raygun. The government should just build the new stadium because the Gabba won’t last another decade. The new design is fantastic and will stand the test of time. A 20/80 funding and ownership split could bypass public ownership laws.
The government’s handling of these Olympics is a joke, and it’s going to humiliate Brisbane. The Brisbane Olympic Stadium is a brilliant concept that would leave a lasting legacy. Vote out this out of touch Labor Government in October.

Why would it humiliate Brisbane? They begged Brisbane to take it. No one else wanted to host it. Brisbane doesn’t have to build a new stadium. The Olympics is a giant scam that cities and governments around the world are cottoning on to. A refurbed GABBA or QSAC is perfect.

$1.6bn on one temporary stadium is just bonkers. I guess low budget Olympics is what happens when they don’t have a bidding process. The host city doesn’t have to make any big commitments.

Melbourne can host the 2032 Olympics and it has the MCG, an already existing 100,000 seat stadium. The majority of Melbourne's already existing sporting facilities are conveniently located and so easy to get to by public transport. Even though there would be a need to build a new International Rowing and Canoeing centre but as Melbourne has most of the required sporting facilities to host the Olympics, the costs to stage it would be minimal by world standards. With Federal Government support and with Corporate sponsorship, this would greatly offset the cost to stage the 2032 Olympics as well. The 2026 could and should be held in Melbourne as well.

  • @ashreddy3441

    Great video, as always, PP.
Big issue with the proposed stadium. Brisbane floods!!! One of the main reasons the metro was built in the first place was to have better transport links to the Gabba. Even with knocking down East Brisbane SS next to the gabba., it's almost too small of an area to have the olympics. I know having watched lions games, there aren't a lot of pubs etc to go to afterwards compared to games at suncorp.
The liberals when they get in will have 2 options, I'm discounting this option in the video due to the price tag.
    1. Build it at Victoria Park, knock the gabba down, and turn it into housing and parkland (Greens own the electorate at all 3 levels). Kangaroo Point is already an extremely high-density area. The cost of the stadium will be 3 billion now, but in 15-20 years, it will be considered a great investment as major acts won't bypass Brisbane (e.g., Taylor Swift).
    2. Do what Sydney did and build a proper Olympic area. House the athletes there, and a bunch of facilities. A lot of the facilities are spread out in Brisbane. Even the bullets have moved from Mt Gravatt back to The entertainment center in Boondall. If you have a bunch of facilities in one area, it would get a lot of use from sporting teams in the area and with Brisbane's growth could even create another AFL. Look at Melbourne, how they have done their planning is amazing. It could go out west or north, which would force the government to spend more money on infrastructure in the suburbs. Or we could be brave and create a sporting precinct at Victoria Park.

There is a lot wrong with the Hamilton proposal that isn't immediately obvious, especially with those proposing it waving around over the top renderings and a supposedly "free" price tag.
For starters, A privately funded stadium is a privately owned stadium. Publicly owned stadiums are a major economic tool for governments, and having more direct control over their use and management is advantageous to the public interest. No doubt that if we went ahead with this private build, we'd have said private company coming into regular disputes with the AFL and Cricket over how the stadium is used, as well as regular lobbying for government funds to address the various issues that arise throughout the life cycle of such infrastructure. The owners will argue that the importance of their stadium to the region's economy justifies these handouts (and they'd have a valid point at that). Why deal with this when the public itself can own the infrastructure?
Next up, location. Now on the surface this looks like a great idea! The exact location is currently under-developed, the area in general is a major growth and emerging activity hotspot for Brisbane and the Olympic village is right next door! What could possibly be wrong with this set up? Well lets start with the land you'd be acquiring. This land is earmarked for significant high density development over the next decade. Basically, take what is already at Hamilton and copy-paste it right up to the Gateway Bridge. Development of this area represents huge proportion of planned growth in SEQ. Slicing a huge chunk of it off for a stadium is a questionable decision, especially in contrast to Victoria Park, essentially being built on a former golf course right next to the CBD, or the Gabba, which is just intensifying the existing use. The question on why we are spending money on stadiums rather then houses is often raised, and I don't think it's a valid argument most the time, but in this instance there is a very direct trade off, because the land in question is literally planned to have major, high-density residential on it.
Still on location, Hamilton isn't very well connected to the CBD, at least not by public transport. This is a major problem that will need to be resolved in the long term planning of the area anyway, but if we were to build the stadium there, we are forced to resolve it right now, and I don't think we have the capacity to do so. Most people point to the proximity of the Doomben line and claim it could be easily extended to the foreshore. What they are missing is how ill suited the Doomben line is for such a service. The Doomben line is a barely used single track route and would require basically a full upgrade if it were to serve the desired role. This is possible, but would only be beneficial for the Northshore precinct, as even in its current state, the Doomben line is perfectly sufficient to handle its current demands. So it isn't just and easy little extension of the line, it's basically a full rebuild, which puts us into similar territory to what would be required to get mass public transit to QSAC. Further to this, the actual route the Doomben line takes to the CBD is circuitous and inefficient. It takes 25min to get from Doomben to Central station by train. It's also possible to catch a bus from Doomben station to Central, in 25mins..... despite travelling through traffic, the bus keeps pace with the train because the route by rail is just that bad. A Northshore comparison would be even worse, as a hypothetical Doomben extension is even more circuitous, and a hypothetical bus service is even more direct then the Doomben-Central version.
A Doomben line extension is a second rate transport link not remotely suitable to the needs of Northshore, even before accounting for the stadium. What is needed is a dedicated, direct mass transit link. This has been proposed in the form of various 'subway' and 'metro' proposals that usually look to link Hamilton/Northshore, Bulimba, Newstead, New Farm, Kangaroo Point, Eagle St and George St (CBD), South Brisbane, West End and Toowong, providing cross city transit capacity and key links to areas otherwise lacking in mass transit. This project is the likely ultimate solution to transport to Northshore, but it won't really be relevant for at least a decade, as the planned timeline of development for the land doesn't create the demand needed to require the build just yet. If we put the Olympic stadium in Northshore, we'd have to build that subway in time for the games, and based on how long it would take to get it done, given it has not even been through significant planning processes, I'd say we had to have started about 4 years ago, so that's simply not happening. So basically, a Northshore Olympic stadium is going to be about as weak in public transport links as the QSAC proposal is.
Now, lets talk about those renderings for a moment. Does anyone actually believe we'd receive an end product even remotely like that? For starters, there is a lot there that looks amazing from the perspective of a drone, but if you think it through, at a ground level it's kind of nonsense. Those giant rooves that fan out are clearly presented as a sort of parkland and major active transit thoroughfare, but that's a bit of madness isn't it? It'll be quite a hike to get up there, and as an active transit route, the flourish is just painfully silly. It's the equivalent of thinking it's a good idea to put a corkscrew in your local street because it looks cool, when in reality is is just impeding the ability for the street to do it's primary job. You see this a lot from proposals that don't consult proper urban planning professionals. Something that looks amazing from a top down perspective very rarely translates to a pleasant experience at a human level. It doesn't matter how impressive a space looks from 500m in the air, because when you experience it, you'll be experiencing it at eye level. Beside that, are we really going to believe that the private company who want to make money through hosting events at the stadium are going to have giant walkways above where you can look down into the stadium for free? So what is the plan then, block them off whenever there is an event? Not exactly great for public amenity.
We've also got a lot of waterworks here. That's a lot impact on the Brisbane River right there. In terms of environmental planning, you're just asking for an absolute nightmare trying to pull this off. Lets put aside how horribly expensive it is, as well as how it doesn't really add anything useful (it's now land you can't build on, and it's not like we didn't have waterfrontage already), the environmental risk involved would have the canals dead in the water. Let's not even start on the flood mitigation that would be required.
The real laughable proposal though is the footbridge over the river. Now, the city council proposed a series of pedestrian river crossings a few elections back, and of course after they won those elections they got hard to work making them happen. One of the proposed bridges was Kangaroo Point to New Farm, which would be an incredibly useful link. Unfortunately, it turns out that under current planning laws, such a bridge would have to have at least the same clearance as the Story Bridge to allow for the currently approved scale of shipping on that part of the river. So, the pedestrian bridge would have had to have been comically massive, cost way too much and was ultimately scraped. Now, consider that this stadium site sits between the cruise terminal at Hamilton and the Gateway bridge, and I think you can see where this is going. Any bridge over the river in this area is going to need to be around the height of the Gateway Bridge. So that's a non-starter. The fact that the proposal includes it at all shows how little thought has actually gone into this. This is pretty basic stuff, and it clearly hasn't been considered at all, because all this proposal is, is a light show designed to attract as much attention and as little critical thought as possible.
Now, as for the actual plan, I don't think even the current Labor government believe QSAC is a good idea. I think it's as simple as an outgoing government knowing they can't win the next election, and trying to make the most of a bad situation. There is no 'popular' option for the stadium. Every option is either blatantly a bad idea, or causes major controversy with certain groups (and of course the sizable contingent that want us to drop the games altogether who will accept no proposal). So, knowing that they will never have to actually act on it, and that not much will happen in the year before the election anyway, Labor took what they believed to be the least controversial, pot stirring option. It doesn't matter if it's a bad call, because at the end of the day, it won't be their call to make! As for the Liberals, as you rightly pointed out, they don't need to commit to anything. Personally I believe they'll go down the Vic Park route once they get in, but before that, they have nothing to gain and everything to lose by declaring one way or another, so why would they?
This will all be sorted out in due time, but the political situation has forced an awkward stasis on the whole thing. Labor isn't going to take risk on further damaging its already precarious position over something that will be out of their control soon anyway, and the Liberals won't take risk until they have secured that control. Post the October election, I believe things will begin to move very quickly.

You have more major events that use a rectangular stadium (Magic Round, State of Origin, Brisbane Broncos home games and battle of Brisbane derby, Matilda and Socceroo games, Rugby Union tests etc.) that would utilise the capacity.
