  • Dave Stanton gives you a quick introduction to the Robert Sorby ProEdge sharpening system. Dave explains what is in the basic and deluxe version as well as discuss the various belts available. A quick demonstration to finish off makes this video the only one you need to watch when considering if this machine is right for you.

    Thankyou for making this video. So helpful. I will be buying this setup shortly. Can’t wait to have some super sharp chisels. It’s going to be great.

    Does the flat grind cause any problems for woodturning chisels?

    • @DavidStanton

      None if you kleep the chisel moving while you sharpen it.

    I don't like how it does not register on the flat back of the chisel like tormek does
    As chisels can be tapered on the top

    How do you install the short platform?

    This video was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Most other Sorby ProEdge videos focus on sharpening woodturning tools. I was looking for chisel sharpening. In particular, thank you for telling me exactly which jig I needed to buy separately to sharpen chisels. I did have one question: is it worth it to get the Short Tool Platform? How small/short does a chisel need to be before it becomes necessary?

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm glad you found the video helpful! The Sorby ProEdge is a great tool for chisel sharpening, and I'm happy to hear that I was able to provide the information you were looking for. As for the Short Tool Platform, it can be useful for chisels that have a shorter blade length, typically down to around 100 mm. It provides better support and stability during sharpening. This is the actual length of the machined flat surface of the blade, not the handle.

    Dave, just purchased the ProEdge. I am really happy with it in principle, but I am having trouble keeping the bench chisels straight. The little guide just isn’t big enough to be completely useful. What do you do. the little square edge jig on the included larger table wont do the usual length chisels and the smaller bench doesn’t have the groove.
    John from Palos Verdes, CA.

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John Polen! It takes a little getting used to it but keep at it. One important thing is the front of the chisel must be clean and parallel to the back, otherwise you will get a bit of rocking happening.

    Dear Sirs,
    I have enjoyed and also found your review very informative, however, I am an ordinary woodworker who has no interest in wood turning and I would appreciate a little information regarding the life of the sharpening belts.
    I appreciate you will reply that it depends on variables of how long, often, perfectionist!
    But roughly/approximately with the couple of “supplied” belts you were supplied with,
    How long did you get out of these belts.
    At present I have a “Worksharp 3000” but I am fed up with how little I get from the disks
    because you can only “work” one particular section of the disc, so I’m looking around for
    A replacement system, but don’t and can’t afford to pay for a “Tormek” system and it looks
    fine if you can lose a lot of time.
    Lastly, since your film review you have been living with your “Pro Edge” system for some
    time, how has it measured up to what you expected.
    Yours truly,
    ross

      Hi Ross Morrow. My proedge is going strong and using the ceramic belts for the courser grades is advisable.

      Dear Sirs,
      Thank you for your very quick response.
      Are the ceramic belts better for sharpening standard ‘Marples/Irwin’ chisels, and Stanley/Record plane irons.
      Yours truly,

    Looks like it’s only good for grinding a new bevel on chisels and planes but wouldn’t use it beyond that. I got it for $50 for someone so I will be saving it for when I get into gauge sharpening

    Hi David, have you had any trouble getting your chisels sharpened square on the robert sorby? I have used the square edge jig but they are not sharpening square. Have you tried to sharpen any hand plane blades on this machine?

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I use the gouge rest to hold my planes at 90 deg, just lucky I guess. The chisel jig isn't as square to the belt tool table.

      Interesting point Dan The Chippie. For speed this is great. Some people say they have trouble achieving a square end but I havn't had that problem.

  • @jaimeclifton9078

    I have one, it's very nicely made. However it's pretty much useless for bevel edge tool sharpening. It doesn't matter how hard you try or how long you take one cannot get a perfectly square edge on chisels or plane blades, even with the square edge jig, everything ends up skewed. There is too much slop in the belt, even with it tensioned correctly. The belt lifts in the opposite direction to where the blade is placed against it.
    It sits in the corner of my workshop unused as an expensive ornament. In hindsite I can see a worksharp is probably a better design.
    I think it was designed primarily for gouge sharpening, I haven't tried it for this but could see it working well for that purpose, or sharpening knives.

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't had that issue. Have you contacted robert sorby about it?

    • @jaimeclifton9078
      @jaimeclifton9078 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DavidStanton - Rather pointless contacting them about a design fault, theres nothing wrong with the machine in its functionality. Guess if you don't mind a slight skew on your chisels it won't bother you quite as much. Or if your mainly a power tool wood worker, don't sharpen plane blades and are not interesting in taking one-three thou shavings with hand planes it might be the right machine for you. If you want it completely square and flat across the bevel its useless.

      I have found the worksharp leaves a convex end on chisels, I never use it. I think for rough sharpening the sorby is ok, but like yours, it mostly gathers dust.

  • @icespeckledhens
    @icespeckledhens 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    A very good review, I used to sharpen my chisels and plane irons by hand but now I get a single facet and square sharp edge on the proedge.
    By the way, Sorby advise the arrows on the belts are for the manufacturing process not directional arrows for the end users. So you can forget about them.

      Thank you Chad Loeffler ! 2 different animals. For quick sharpening you can't beat the proedge and it also gives you a flat grind which leaves more "meat" behind the bevel you want. The other thing is the table on the sorby is always going to be set to the same degree, not 1 degree either side. I also have a Triton wet stone grinder and use it to flatten the back of the chisels on the side of the stone if they need it. It is also very relaxing to use if I have a spare 30 minutes to sharpen 1 chisel.
