@@SailHubJust started enjoying your videos so I'm a little late . I noticed your great idea separating the thin wooden strips but immediately thought it may be slightly better to STAGGER them instead of all in one row so steam won't have any DRY SPOTS.
@pieterbezuidenhout2741 Hi Pieter, stoked you are enjoying the channel !! As for the sticks, the steam can easily penetrate them, I’ve being doing this for years and never had any trouble, even in 1 1/2 inch thick timber. To be honest you don’t even need them it just helps with really tight bends and also I feel like it speeds the process up a bit! Let’s me know how you get on if you try it though 👍

Hey! So nice to hear your words! Mate, we both lived in NZ for a while, ego’s don’t work down there ay! Maybe that stuck with us! Mind you… your in the list of places to take the boat (probably dreaming but hell, we’ve all gotta do that right!) anyhow, great to hear from you and keep an eye out in the future! 👍
Very beautiful work and elegant design! I built a wine room on a historic sailboat turned into a restaurant moored on a river in Philadelphia several years ago as my only boat work as a carpenter to date. Watching your work I’m starting to get a desire for it again. By the by brilliant music playlist especially the blues song. Cheers Curt
Hey Curt, thanks fella. Please you enjoyed it and great to hear we may have inspired you to pick the tools up again! The floating restaurant sound way cool!! 👍👊
@@SailHubThe boat is called the Moshulu docked on the Delaware river in Philadelphia. Not only a historic boat but a famous one as well, it was in the movie Godfather.
Hi Nicolas! Thanks fella, here’s hoping things pick up for us in the future mate! Great to be appreciated and stoked to be seeing you in the next one! Thanks for joining us! 👊😀
Your gonna get non of that here chap! Well… kinda. I like to be as close as I can but near enough is good enough for our own projects. That being said we won’t be scrimping. Anyhow, great to hear from you and hope to see you in the next one!
Taken back by the craftsmanship and video production skills in the fine team y'all make. As a hobbyist woodworker planning a van purchase and build out within the next few years I'm thrilled to follow along your odyssey. The steam bent lam technique with the bag going while clamping had me intrigued and the chisel and plane work had me glued in for the series for inspiration. I don't know what it will look like in the end, but I know it'll be epic. Cheers
Hey, thanks so much for the kind comment. Chris will be stoked to hear you’re enjoying the woodwork and thanks for the production encouragement too… ❤️team work makes the dream work 🤞🏼😉 exciting times coming up for you, what van are you going for? Hopefully we have you along for the boat build too 👍🏼
Your build sure does challenge anything I've seen being built in the camper/motorhome world before Simply stunning workmanship looking forward to the next video
Insane talent, phenomenal camera and editing work coupled with amazing music. Best channel I’ve tripped across in long time, looking forward to watching further. Thanks,
I can't add to what everyone else is saying. This craft & development of the van with a nautical theme is just incredible. When it comes time for the yacht we can only imagine what we're in for. This channel is a gem! Thanks to both of you 🙏✌️👍
Thanks mate, mind you any help is always much appreciated 👊 get yourself over here and join us on the tools! You can park your van outside and hook up to the genny! 😀👊 P.s cool vans you e got going on there!
Really enjoying the inspiration and details as I get ready to build out the back of my truck with a topper on it. Curves are so worth the effort and this van build is proof. Thanks.
Just came in from working on my ford E350 unicell 4x4 build trying to dodge the rain here in Florida , after watching a lot of boat builds I decided to do my interior in a boat theme also and getting closer to being finished after almost a year and a half of work. At 64 years old I’m not really into social media but my son posted some pics and people seemed to love it so that made me feel good. Chris you are a true craftsman and very inspirational, glad I found your channel, keep up the great work.
Hey up, sounds like an epic project you’ve been on with, I would live to see it myself! Where do I find out more? Cheers for the compliments too, super nice of you! 👍
Hey! Cheers for that! Camera tricks mate, Jenni is a legend with that thing! Thanks though! The boats so exciting too, so pleased your into that too, that’s where it’s really at!! 😃
Interesting to see another yacht builders techniques! It's a bit messier and riskier but certainly faster and more reliable - I've bought 1.5-2.5mm veneer before, ripped it down and then made similar jigs but with a same height piece that goes on the inside of the bends to push in place and screws down to hold the veneers in. I dry assemble and measure it all, line it with thin polythene sheet and make an epoxy bath, with west's slow epoxy. The wet epoxy makes the veneers flexible enough to get into position without cracking and you only have to lay it up once and you can also screw wood on the topside to keep the veneers from splaying. This was by coincidence for a hallberg rassy the first time, with a similar handle built into the bulkhead. Great to see someone else building these vans with a keen eye for detail!
Cheers man, yeah there is a ton of ways to do it! Great to hear you’ve method too 👍. For me, commercially I would generally machine it down in a wide belt sander however what’s interesting is thy when I give it a tickle with the hand plane the glue lines become non existent. It’s all down to cost though so that’s not likely to happen often 😂
Hey Tom, Thanks fella! They can call all they want chap! We’ve got our own boat to build first! So stoked about this build too, epic mate! Thanks so much for the compliment though, much appreciated 🤟🏼
I could watch you guys build anything, just your enthusiasm and craftsmanship on its own is worth watching, but I will be particularly happy watching the boat build, that is just my thing.
Hey Paul, thanks so much man! Yeah, boats are by far the best and we really can’t wait to move onto it! She’s a really cool hull and an amazing project for us, but it’s the adventure ahead that’s even more exciting!! Great to have you on board with our projects 👍😃
Yes Dan 🤟🏼 love to hear you’ve found something you love here and even better to hear you’ll be onboard for the boat project! We can’t wait!!! Thank you for the compliments too!!
Hey guys! Great to hear from you! Thanks for that, yeah it’s pretty cool the varnishing stage! Just wish it wasn’t a 7 coat process to get the next wow factor😂!
Many years ago I was told the the difference between a master and a muddler, was the ability to fix and/or hide screw-ups 🤣And before anybody yells at me , that wasn't a critisism. The vans looking stunning 👍
Thanks guys, I always have Shazam to hand when watching your vids! 🎶😉 ...And I always learn something new. Which is why I went into carpentry and joinery in the first place waaay back in the mid 90's when I was trying to decide which trade to go into. After spending a couple of years on site as chief brusher upperer and tea brewers assistant, one of the old chippies on site swayed me towards carpentry/joinery when he told me that as the wood trades are so broad ranging, and are usually first in and last out on most sites, there is always something new to learn. His words have proved true so many times over the years. Every day is a learning day. Please excuse the long comment, but there's another story I think you might find interesting/relevant to your build/skill set. I'm currently working on a listed heritage refurb/restoration. The original part of the building was built in 1680, not far from the coast in Cornwall. When I recently removed some of the GF floorboards in the original part of the house, to assess the condition of the oak joists. I was quite taken aback to find that a number of the joists were bent, quite obviously in a controlled and uniform manner. We're pretty certain that they were originally ship/boat timbers, probably reclaimed from a wreck on the coast, [possibly even a result of Lamplighting!] for use in the house. Looking around the rest of the house we've now found a number of the currently exposed original oak beams, joists and studs have evidence of previous use, with numerous drilled [and burnt!] holes, mortices, and housing joints that have no relevance to the layout or historical use of the house. Seems likely it was quite a large ship/boat that wrecked [as there are some long spans], and its timbers taken for use elsewhere, [no doubt along with its cargo!]😲. I'm currently flitching one of the SF oak beams to allow for removal of a structural stud wall, as it has a large shake right down its length. I've had to remove 10-15mm of a section of the bottom chord of an attic roof truss, which is sat on the beam, to accept the steel flitch supports. That old oak is no joke to work let me tell you 🤣 At least 344 years old, almost certainly had a life at sea before that, and still going strong! Would love to send you some pics but I don't do Insta for the mo. Anyway, as always, looking forward to the next episode and finally getting cracking on my own van when my current commitments eventually allow 🛠⚒️ Have fun both 🤙🤙
Hey, now that sounds like an epic building! We rebuilt a 1600’s house once, kinda crazy what we found in the walls too! You could send some pics to info@sail-hub.com if you want, it would be fab to see them. We would love to see why you do with your van too! Anyhow, cheers for sharing it’s been great to read about your project and we hope to see you in the next one too! 😀
I love what you are doing with your camper! I did a teak interior in my sprinter, but using veneer, and vacuum bagging to save weight. Veneer is also a great way to make very tight curves, without a bunch of material prep. Some veneer suppliers have different thicknesses available, besides the normal thin stuff. I’m surprised you don’t make two part molds, the easy way to even clamping pressure, without a ton of clamps. Titebond does make the best glue lines! Keep up the good work!
Hey Mark, some good ideas there, if you check out our other videos you will see two part moulding and veneering. They are fantastic techniques! With this one I wanted solid edging as these areas will get quite a lot of hammer but I really want to show people they can create these curves using basic hand tools. Vacuum bags are just brilliant but it removes our connection to the average boatbuilder. That being said we will be vacuum bagging a carbon dodger on our boatbuild at some point next year. Glad your enjoying our process too, would love to see your to be honest, That’s would be quite inspiring for us I’m sure! Are you on Instagram? Cheers, Chris
I have no idea how I missed this video!!!! I came to the channel to check if I missed something I was like surely they posted by now! Only to realise I missed this one!. Lovely work. Jaw dropping!!! Thank you for sharing!
Hey up fella! Thanks mate! Glad you like it. Just back from SIBS fella, great to be back on some boats! Gets me thinking, it’s been a year since we met at the OGR! Time flies, have you sorted that bowsprit?
Hey Dan, cheers lad! No stress re shout out mate, credit due where it’s due. I actually mentioned you in our filming for the next one 🤭 Jenni got all mixed up in the outro! Still, she was right to do so. Hope to pop by at some point and check out what’s going on with you in person! Catch ya🤙
Looking forward to seeing it finished, when I was young I worked on an old wooden fish boat, it started life as a schooner converted to a tug then into a packer, there something about a wooden boat...
Cheers! Yeah, we’re looking forward to that day too! Old wooden boats are fab, I love them. We’ve had a few but we wanted something a bit more durable for the next project.
Wonderful work, I can watch this stuff for hours. Best thing is learning the tricks of the magicians! My Lotus 9.2 yacht from 1980's New Zealand has curved bulkheads and some incredible little touches of woodwork that I marvel at and revel in, and I've often wondered how the heck they did that stuff. Now I know! Cheers Rick :-)
@@SailHub Hell yeah you have! Those really tight bends in wood, steam bending I was aware of but laminated stem bending? keeping the grain in line and reducing adhesives, making it appear as a solid bit of wood?! Now that is for sure a magic trick! Thank you for sharing that :-)
😂 not likely magic mate…! Just a day in the life of a boatbuilder👍 Stoked to hear it’s helped, you know where we are if you get stuck too, it’s all pretty simple but shout if you need a hand. Hope to see you in the next one!! 👍😃
I really appreciate the progress, most of us will not need, have or acquire the skills to create such beautiful stuff. We are though quite curious about how such results are accomplished. If more detail is needed, it can be found. I really appreciate the pace of your videos.
Just jumped-into your awesome clip, fantastic this handcrafted work 😊. Never seen before, cool 😎! Very well done, this is amazing. Greetings from Switzerland 🇨🇭

You craftsmanship is so good it’s almost upsetting! I couldn’t have made that handle if I had taken a year to do it. Loving this series, and can’t wait to see more!
after each episode I think: "cannot wait for next"! I'm currently designing to build me a small toilet/shower combo in my tiny little house, safe to say: what I have in my head is evolving on the fly!
Found your channel as I have a 32 year old campervan which is more a labour of love lol, but not quite as fancy as your upcoming build, but I have a Norman 18 that has been sat in a yard for 10 years, that is now on a trailer, and about to start work fitting it out to tow behind the campervan, so some great ideas thank you :)
@@SailHub Ours is a Toyota Hi-Ace, originally converted by Devon in the 90's, so now slowly bringing it up to date, plus accommodate the wife and my disabilities, and then decorated by the wife who is an amazing artist, so you defiantly see us coming 🤣 so the boat will be on a similar vein 😁
Thanks Scott! Mate, we’ve put the work in but we still don’t have the time or the shed…. 😂 I guess we can’t have it all mate! Thanks though, makes us feel great to get comments like this! 🍻
I am a jock and I can hear your from the same place as I but I used to work in the shipyards on the Clyde many many years ago and when I was a apprentice I would be working in the carpenters work shop mostly coating all kinds of beautiful wood some of it I’ve never heard of then and never heard of again but what always stuck in my head was watching some of the old guys working they were real craftsman and that side of the work is gone as it was probably to expensive but away from all that I am really enjoying watching your skill set and to see the final product, myself I am retired and enjoy my fly fishing all over and have a vw t25 to sleep in so I am very happy with life. Peace and love plus tight lines as we say 🥃🏴🎣❤️

Hey 👋🏼 yahooo we are both super stoked to hear you feel part of the build! That means a lot! Thank you for the comment again too!! See you in the next one for the saloon or galley 😉
Mate! Jenni deserves all the credit, thanks for sharing your thoughts, the video work is what makes this for sure. Me for example, It may look good but I’m just a woodworker, without Jenni I’m nothing man!
S.S. upright poles added are a cool nod and utilitarian grab holds or task lamp mount. Decommisioned Kettenburg Marine witness to ages of brass specialty items go to who knows and steam boxes relegated to history. Nice to see the hand craft lives.
Yeah, it’s really sad to see maritime history fading away. Finding wooden shipwrights is really hard these days, there are plenty of imitators but real quality is hard to find. Mind you there is little call for it and the waves reflect this so it’s no surprise. Mind you, those of us who enjoy it are living a really cool existence, we get to use modern materials and technologies with a new level of creativity in hiding these materials whilst preserving the classic aesthetics! There’s not connection to the boat quite like it! So yeah, we’re doing our best to keep handcrafting alive!
Amazing talent you have and the techniques are amazing!! All of this in a van is amazing.. we as a family want to buy a l2h2 van soon.. the problem we have is to sleep and seat 4… not easy!! Love how your van is looking and the unusual plans you have!! Amazing series!! Thank you
Wow it’s really coming together. I like to think I’m handy buy you guys have me in awe 😮 I am loving this build. I dream of buying my own boat and sailing the world but reality is slim, this however has my mind ticking maybe a more achievable goal. Good luck guys I hope you achieve you dreams 😊
Hi John! So cool your enjoying our work! We’re both super stoked to hear this. Mate, don’t give up on boats, you really don’t need to be rich man or talented or any of what we’re told we need to be. Just have a dream and hit it bang in the head! We recently did a cool interview with a friend (episode Eskimo Solo) who is legendary mate, and just a few days ago with a friend who just finished an Atlantic circuit on his home build steel boat via Greenland and Iceland. That’s about sailing yacht Zora (also on TH-cam) we will publish that soon when we get the footage from him. Mate, just go for it!

I watch a lot of TH-cam… This is the best channel/series I’ve ever seen. Your attention to detail is next-level and I love it that you show your problem solving. Great work. I converted my own crafter (sprinter) and the thing that kept me up at night (genuinely) was weight. You’ve got quite a few heavy bits and bobs there… how are you ensuring you keep the weight down (
Hello! Thank you so much! That’s so cool to hear! We’re both really pleased your enjoying our videos. So, congrats on your build! Sounds exciting! As for ours, it’s surprisingly not all that heavy, I mean it sit light… but she should be under payload - we will cover it in an upcoming video for you, that will be easier than a mega message! @@SailHub Great stuff… you wouldn’t believe how much I’m looking forward to the boat-build… even though I hate the ocean and have no intention of ever going near it! I’m defo going to have a bash at steam-bending soon - you explained that really clearly and the results stunning. 👍
@SailHub it's people like you who inspire me to do the impossible, to turn a 30ft Catamaran into a blue water cruiser, I suspect adding an extra 10ft on the stern will be a good start, the sailing community is so strong, I am glad to be a part of it... one day I may be showing off my timber work on my humble little channel and I can say I learnt this from you guys ☺️🤙🙏
this is a wonderful series and I am just loving what your doing. I will be interested to know what this van weighs when your done and just how much weight those beautiful hard woods add to your build. its a shame about that nasty plastic window trim and im sure with just another two or three days that could be replaced with some kind of lovingly crafted exotic hard wood ( just kidding ). fabulous keep it coming. PS check out the monument hole saws , they cut the wood rather than burn through it.
Hey Peter, Cheers fella, great to have your support! Aye, plastic song so fantastic… weight wise, we’ve had a lot of questions there and just made a video about it actually. It’s quite surprising. As for the hole saws, thanks for the suggestion, I will check them out - it’s about time for some new ones. Cheers! Mind you, I’m kind attached to the Bosch system as it’s so quick and easy, the main problem is they are all a few year old now and they get used in stainless and ally a lot too! Catch you next time! 😀
WOW what great craftsmanship Your build was suggested by the magic algorithm and I thoroughly enjoyed the watch. You are doing an amazing job with all the wood and refit. I am wondering if you have the paint code for your van? Im doing a VW Vanagon Westfalia and would like to paint it that color. Lucklely I dont have to wait for next week to see the next episode and can binge watch the whole thing that has been put on TH-cam.
@greggchristenesen8524 Hey Gregg, cheers fella! I hope you enjoy it! Do let us know what you think of the rest of them! I will need to search out a paint code for you, so remind me as my head is battered with boat testing at the moment!! When we get back to the shed I will get into it. Mind you, it’s hard to believe but it’s. Genuine VW colour straight from factory, I was really surprised! We even have a t6 in the same village that colour now. It’s like green marmite 😊
Beautiful woodworking and carpentry (shipwright) skills and videography + the cool music too. But can I ask a superfluous question, where is Chris' accent from? I'm a west end Newcastle lad (bloke) and I hear Geordie, Smoggie, Sand Dancer and Mackem all mixed together... 🙏
Sand dancer?! Mate, classic…. I’m a Durham lad, mind you been around a few countries over the years! Cheers for the comment marra Jenni will be stoked too. The camera work goes unnoticed too often and she’s way more skilled than me!

Watching your work I’m starting to get a desire for it again. By the by brilliant music playlist especially the blues song.
Cheers

Hey Curt, thanks fella. Please you enjoyed it and great to hear we may have inspired you to pick the tools up again! The floating restaurant sound way cool!! 👍👊
@@SailHubThe boat is called the Moshulu docked on the Delaware river in Philadelphia. Not only a historic boat but a famous one as well, it was in the movie Godfather.
@Boyerblues no way. I’m going to watch that! Cheers 👍
Enjoying seeing how this kind of woodworking is achieved! Lovely work!
Cheers! Glad your enjoying it! 👍
How you guys don’t have a shed load more subscribers baffles me. Great job so far and can’t wait to follow along for the whole journey
Hi Nicolas! Thanks fella, here’s hoping things pick up for us in the future mate! Great to be appreciated and stoked to be seeing you in the next one! Thanks for joining us! 👊😀
The pain, persistence, and pleasure of the perfectionist. Lovely work and great to watch. Keep it coming.
Hopefully we have you along for the boat build too 👍🏼
Your build sure does challenge anything I've seen being built in the camper/motorhome world before
Simply stunning workmanship looking forward to the next video

Insane talent, phenomenal camera and editing work coupled with amazing music.
Best channel I’ve tripped across in long time, looking forward to watching further.
Thanks,
Hey Rupert! Thanks mate, that’s some seriously kind words!
So please you enjoyed it! See you in the next one 🤙😃
Dan Lee is amazing indeed, and not only for varnishing 😁
Absolutely 💯 We’re looking forward to catching up with him at a Boat Show this week actually 🤟🏼
absolutely epic great ideas for my upcoming box truck build.. So glad we met
Thanks, glad you found it useful 👍👌
I can't add to what everyone else is saying. This craft & development of the van with a nautical theme is just incredible. When it comes time for the yacht we can only imagine what we're in for. This channel is a gem! Thanks to both of you 🙏✌️👍

@@SailHub Thanks! 7years of living in vans full time and refining the design. 😉
Really enjoying the inspiration and details as I get ready to build out the back of my truck with a topper on it. Curves are so worth the effort and this van build is proof. Thanks.
Hey up! Cheers for that, so pleased you like it 👍🏼😀
Just came in from working on my ford E350 unicell 4x4 build trying to dodge the rain here in Florida , after watching a lot of boat builds I decided to do my interior in a boat theme also and getting closer to being finished after almost a year and a half of work.
This is a great build. The workmanship is fantastic. I can't wait for the boat build.
Hey! Cheers for that! Camera tricks mate, Jenni is a legend with that thing!
Thanks though! The boats so exciting too, so pleased your into that too, that’s where it’s really at!! 😃
Watching you creat this beautiful work is just pure perfection 👍👍👍
Hey Neil, thanks mate! Glad your enjoying it!
Top notch craftsmanship!
Thanks so much 👊😀
Interesting to see another yacht builders techniques!
Nice work Chris. That handle is amazing. Spirit Yachts will be calling you 👍🏼
Hey Tom,
Thanks fella!
Great to have you on board with our projects 👍😃
love watching the craftsmanship going into this project.

I love Boats and Van Bild aud you are doing both.
Great job with curves wood 🪵.
This is going to be epic.👍
Yes Dan 🤟🏼 love to hear you’ve found something you love here and even better to hear you’ll be onboard for the boat project! We can’t wait!!! Thank you for the compliments too!!
Ooooooooohh! Watching that first coat of varnish go on to that detail..... very VERY satisfying!!
Hey guys! Great to hear from you!
Thanks for that, yeah it’s pretty cool the varnishing stage! Just wish it wasn’t a 7 coat process to get the next wow factor😂!
@@SailHub oh we know the feeling 😂 it’s never an easy process but soooo worth it!! 👌
@SailingRagdoll yeah, your right! We need to stay strong and believe😝
@@SailHub good things come to those who wait…. Many hours for varnish to dry! 😂
For sure! I’m pretty sure you can tell a few stories after your refit!
Many years ago I was told the the difference between a master and a muddler, was the ability to fix and/or hide screw-ups 🤣And before anybody yells at me , that wasn't a critisism. The vans looking stunning 👍
Mate, your dammed right there! Couldn’t agree more!
Thanks for that fella 👍😃🙌
@@dfn808 yep. Mistakes, we all make 'em, it's how you get over 'em that matters 😁
@aderiley6592 Oh Yeaaaah! Your right there!!

...And I always learn something new.
Anyway, as always, looking forward to the next episode and finally getting cracking on my own van when my current commitments eventually allow 🛠⚒️
Have fun both 🤙🤙
Hey, now that sounds like an epic building!
Glad your enjoying our process too, would love to see your to be honest,
That’s would be quite inspiring for us I’m sure! Are you on Instagram?
Cheers,
Chris

@DanLeeBoatbuilding 🤦♂️
Hey Rick,
Cheers fella! Glad we’ve shed some light on your thoughts!
Just a day in the life of a boatbuilder👍
Stoked to hear it’s helped, you know where we are if you get stuck too, it’s all pretty simple but shout if you need a hand.

I really appreciate the progress, most of us will not need, have or acquire the skills to create such beautiful stuff. We are though quite curious about how such results are accomplished. If more detail is needed, it can be found. I really appreciate the pace of your videos.

Hey up mate! Great to hear from you! Yeah, next time we’re passing we will give you a shout!👍😀
S.S. upright poles added are a cool nod and utilitarian grab holds or task lamp mount.
Interiors done proper is always nice to see.

this is a wonderful series and I am just loving what your doing.
Hey Peter,

Aye, plastic song so fantastic… weight wise, we’ve had a lot of questions there and just made a video about it actually. It’s quite surprising.
As for the hole saws, thanks for the suggestion, I will check them out - it’s about time for some new ones. Cheers! Mind you, I’m kind attached to the Bosch system as it’s so quick and easy, the main problem is they are all a few year old now and they get used in stainless and ally a lot too!

For sure! It’s great stuff👍
Hell of a lot of work for the bulkhead handle but worth it i think. Looks great.
Have you considered seadek for ceiling or floor finish?
Hey up, thank you! Pleased you like it, we’re pretty happy with it too!
The floor is already sorted, we like to go eco friendly where we can, can’t wait to show it off to be honest, it’s from Navicork and it’s stunning! Can’t wait to fit it!
Just needs a bilge pump now!😂
Ohhh Yeahhh! 😂👍
Keep off the sweet jumps!
@tacotruck-kq5rr Sweet jumps?! Are you going right back to the mountain bike video here?! 😃
Guys, I'm running out of superlatives to use here. This is just outstanding what you are doing. Hurry up and start the boat, please. This is going to be EPIC!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hey Wagner! Nice to hear from you again fella! Mate, the support is awesome from you, thanks so much!👍
Honestly we can wait to get into the boat either…. Winter going to be hard but it’s going to be amazing! I just can’t wait!!!
