Whoever is in best position and in capacity needs to put in million percent efforts to prevent the potential violent conflicts of any type. No-one should provoke no-one.
As a Canadian and a friend of many Ukrainians I hope NATO will be firm against Putins agression. If we fail on this situation by diplomatic or by militarily means I feel this just may the start of more agression in Eastern Europe and the rest of the world.
I hardly call it chess when all Russia does is threaten its neighbors. All it results in to is that NATO will increase its permanent presence in Eastern NATO nations + Finland and Sweden will increase their military presence in Baltic region. On top of that, no one trusts Russia and all sorts of trade etc. will be harder for Russia. Also Russia - EU energy trade has taken a great hit, EU is already seeking another options for Gas supplies. Not to mention that Finnish - Russia trade route that was in papers which would connect Asia to Europe is now scrapped. It would have made Chinese belt project obsolete and the profits from such route would have been enormous. So, what are the benefits for Russia in all this? I can't think of any.

Russia is playing chess with the world....
