  • My father and I spent years talking about this little grove of massive trees located in the Oregon Coast Range. Scared off by the long and unreliable drive to the trailhead we finally decided to make the effort to get there. We were not disappointed.
    THIS HIKE
This 51-acre grove of massive Douglas Fir and Western Hemlock trees is surrounded by clear cuts on private timberland. As such gates and access can be closed without notice. If you make it to the trailhead you're in for a treat. The easy 1.4 mile lollipop travels through quintessential old growth forest of the North Fork Siletz River. Some trees are over 20 feet in circumference and 500+ years old, you'll even pass through the fallen nurse log of "Big Guy" which was believed to be the 2nd largest Douglas Fir in Oregon when it fell due to a windstorm in 1981. Before heading out please check the official BLM site and call to make sure roads are open: www.blm.gov/visit/valley-gian...

Thanks for the wonderful video. I went up there a couple days ago after wanting to for a decade and getting lost once.
No one should think it is just a walk in the forest.... Last five plus miles of road are terrible and not suitable for cars you revere. Pickups for sure. For those who are curious, my suggestions are.
Check with BLM first. There are countless roads that are spurs. The latest map would be advisable because over the years bridges have been replaced and culverts added here and there. Take a walking stick and try to plan for dry weather. The trail has steep parts that will be slippery when wet. What a treat. never forget it. We even saw a barred owl

Wow that's cool. I'd love to see some old photos or videos of the town when it existed. Have you come across anything?

Thanks for the kind words. It's a long drive out there for such a short hike, but driving through the clear cuts and then enjoying this ancient forest really makes you want to preserve what is still left.

Thanks Steve! The coast range is pretty great when you can get through all the thick brush! 😊

Great to hear. I try to add that stuff to give a little more context to the hikes.

Redwood sorrel edible in small quantities… good as flavor/seasoning.

Yup. I really only eat it as a trail snack to get a nice acidic flavor while drinking some water. 👍

That Alligator Lizard is a nice find. I've never seen one.

I'm really bad at spotting reptiles. I was in Canyonlands recently and only saw 3 or 4 lizards and the place is loaded with them! So anytime I see one I get pretty excited.

It was missing its tail…they come off pretty easily. All over near Florence in the edge of the dunes under old logs and rocks
