enasha. So true. My sentiments exactly. That HEART is what sets Susan apart. The girl most definitely got heart. I just love it that she's so humble and unpretentious. This too sets her apart. She has so much more going for her than just talent. She's a pretty lady. I ADORE her.
Yes I did listen and I am aware of what she did for her mother and she still cares for elderly people in her community. That is her life and calling. And an admirable one at that. She had a full life before and after her mother. I feel the comment Bette made is belittling.
I think Bette Midler is right about certain times being right for certain artists, like Susan Boyle and like Bette herself in the late 60s early 70s. This is a time for Susan Boyle and it looks like she's making the most of it. Her early version of "Cry Me a River" is just incredible, maybe the best version of that song ever recorded.
@DAVEJJR and FranBMan I think we need to remember this is how Bette Midler and a lot of Americans speak especially New Yorkers. And Bette Midler has been a professional for many years and has been asked what she thinks and is handling the question with typical Bette Midler directness, an honest professional critique as she sees it.
Bette Midler and Susan Boyle both have unique stories and lots of talent. We have more people in the States than in Britain so we spend more money on entertainment, collectively. Both women are great.
of course if you make it in America you made it in the whole world.. with so many ethnic groups and nationalities it makes an artist well known in every corner of the world.
And the thing she said she didn't believe was that the judges were so surprised. But I'm sure it's because the judges on American Idol hear the candidates without an audience. I think Bette thought Britain's Got Talent did the same thing. I think those who say Boyle can't sing are a little green-eyed with envy. I wish I couldn't sing like her! She might not have had much professional training, but she has improved herself over the years. Check the vids of her back to the 1970s. Big diff.
I am a little confused to as Bette's Vegas show ran for two years 2008-2010, at least two of her last records were nominated for Grammy's and her last compilation record went # 6 in the UK. Please if you feel the need to criticize at the very least get your facts correct. a
Thank GOD she said something that no one else mentioned and I have always thought - of course the situation with Susan Boyle was at least partially staged and selectively shot - not negating her immense performative skill. From, -'tarotworldtour'
Some people............. really!! Bette Midler has been through alot to get where she is now and has worked extremely hard!!! So why would she be mean to someone!! that is going through hard times :/ she clearly wasn't being rude at all. Bette Midler is truley DIVINE!!!!!
I think Bett was truthful about what she said about Susan. She didn't say a bad word about her. Susan herself told reports and such that she didn't have an exciting life. Her mom wanted to be a singer and encouraged her. There just wasn't a way to do it until this show came along. PS. Bett, stop having surgeries! Almost didn't recognize you!
@bonzelite On the contrary, Midler was far more supportive than what you're assuming... You must have a dislike in her to say that. What Bette was in fact getting at, was wondering if the production already knew Susan was good, from private audition which we see in X-Factor, or even Amrican Idol... I'm not sure anymore about America's Got Talent, however Britain's Got Talent auditions were indeed Live... I'm sure Bette confused the differences in shows, but did not "diss" her at all.
You do realize that Susan Boyle didn't sing Memory on that video correct? I have no idea where you got that. She sang "I dreamed a dream" from Les Miserables, which is an extremely religious piece. So I don't know what your big schpiel is about.
Anyone who doesn't recognize Bette Midler's talent doesn't know anything about music or performing and is not giving her credit for her incredible intelligence and verbosity. She is not dissing Susan Boyle. Susan has a great voice but has she been performing for six decades like Bette? When Susan's career has the longevity of Bette's then you can start comparing them.
I hope she sings "power of Love on her next Cd.. also Her TV speical will be on Dec.13/09 and EVERYONE VOTE VOTE VOTe for Susan Boyle t oWin online People's choice AWARDS!!!!
Bette tried to answer that last question without seeming arrogant. Most American stars if they decide to tour abroad consider it a given that they are already famous in whatever country they decide to go to. This includes the UK. Sorry...
Holy smokes! In this one interview, Bette Midler leads people to believe that all her "touching" and "sensitive" performances in the US for various charities were bogus.
@cosg9531 I'd have to disagree! At 50 Bette had a much stronger voice than susan, and a hell of a lot more control.I don't understand why people are going off at Bette! She was asked what she thought, and spoke highly of Susan!
What Bette said might have been a faux pas, an open-mouth-insert-foot moment which she cringed about when she heard it. She's probably used the term about herself even after her success. Or, as someone suggested, she meant Susan had no PUBLIC life before this. Bette was not disparaging about Susan at all. Even when she was saying Boyle sang straight she was complimenting her on not having to use gadgets like singer today do, i.e. Rhianna, Britney Spears, etc.
The first minute of this video should have been removed (sounded like a broken record). I think Bette Midler was trying to provide instructive criticism to someone she didn't know. Kind of like the American idol judges do. Sometime being put on the spot publicly with a question like that can cause a person to be caught off guard. I didn't hear any trash talk coming out. If you want to hear a bashing just watch Howard Stern interview someone. Yet he did it for the ratings.
Listen more carefully will you please! Bette Midler is actually very supportive of Susan Boyle. Susan herself has already stated publicly that throughout her life she always felt that she was "on the outside looking in" and felt excluded from life by people's attitude and by the bullying she received in earlier life. Bette Midler was referring to this when she was commenting on Susan "having no life". She was not being disrespectful at all. Listen again instead of ripping into people!!
Bette's comment about Susan Boyle and her choice of a "faith based" song is ridiculous. "I Dreamed a Dream" says just the opposite of a dream realized. If anyone listens to the song, it's about NOT achieving one's dream; it states that "life has killed the dream I dreamed". Midler is a good example of untalented audacious voice that is thrown out at the audience. While the power in their voices is similar, Midler is not in the same magnificent league as Susan Boyle.
@butimar68 she is just her very frank self - she actually says: "...basically, had no life until she..." (in terse video) all her comments are also sympathetic - and astute - i haven't heard anybody publicly quizzing the (apparent lack of) logic of that "you tube" video (come on!) it's a bit hard to appear sweet when they don't want you to... mind you (!), by any merit, Bette Midler is far more successful entertaining artist than all the judges on "that particular show" together
just to correct what i say in reply to @butimar68: there is a sense of proportion lost here - by any merit, if of any relevance, Bette Midler is a far more accomplished entertaining artist than all the judges on "that particular show", and quite possibly all alike shows, together she may not appear sweet, but what she is saying is frank and sympathetic - in any case (even with better video), she is not famous for her "sweetens" but for quick wit... and quite a number of other things :)
@dixiedragon54 I think what she meant was that in comparison she had no life. In comparison to what she was before the show and after, she may have been content but you cant tell me her life was exciting.
That was a very ego-driven statement saying that Susan Boyle had no life before she came on the show 4:04 She HAD A LIFE!! It may not have been a glamorous/rich one but it was a life nonetheless. Apparently Bette Midler forgot what her 'life' was before she made it big. SMH.
Ugh people are stupid. If you think she was insulting Susan, you're wrong. Bette Midler has been a successful entertainer for damn near 50 years. Why would you think she is being insulting? So she said Susan had no life? THAT'S WHY EVERYONE LOVED HER!!! Susan Boyle would still be in her village if she didn't come on the show looking frumpy, and like she was long suffering. She wouldn't have made it through. And YES, there is a pre-audtion for BGT for the producers, not the judges.
In reference to Susan (and by implication the rest of us), Bette says, "she had no life" before being seen on Idol (4:00). How condescending. Ordinary people have no lives worth considering compared to celebrities. Celebrities and their lifestyle would not exist without the acclaim of ordinary people.
Bette is living proof that just because your talent is abundant it doesn't make you a empathic caring and insightful individual. She should stop doing interviews.
Terrible video you need to redo it OP. I skipped to Midler but there were still problems. And she didn't throw Susan under the bus, in fact she likes her voice. I would like to hear what Bette thinks about Jackie Evancho's voice.
Saying someone has no life is judgemental and presumptuous and there ain't no getting around that. Bette needs to shake the cobwebs out of her head because that was classless and revealing. She is a great singer but needs to work on her humanity.
Susan Boyle had plenty of training. Bette is ignorant to her background and upbringing. She doesn't get it. I think if Bette looked at herself in that interview she would be wincing. This is not one of Bette's finer moments. I will give her a pass. She is better than this.
she basically had no life???? wow that's snobbery. Susan Boyle herself said she led a content life. She wanted to be a singer but she never claimed not to have a life it was just a very calm settled life without the cameras, the fame, the attention and she supposedly loves to return to her quiet life after the zoo of fame
enasha. So true. My sentiments exactly. That HEART is what sets Susan apart. The girl most definitely got heart. I just love it that she's so humble and unpretentious. This too sets her apart. She has so much more going for her than just talent. She's a pretty lady. I ADORE her.
Yes. I was fascinated by it. It looks like some kind of glass beads mixed with pearls. Beautiful and stylish, and she looks fantastic for 64.
Someone seriously needs to upload this video again, this time in a form that doesn't sound like a badly broken record!
Yes I did listen and I am aware of what she did for her mother and she still cares for elderly people in her community. That is her life and calling. And an admirable one at that. She had a full life before and after her mother. I feel the comment Bette made is belittling.

thank you :)
America LOVES Susan Boyle. Most Americans have never even heard of Robbie Williams.
Is there any way you can get the entire interview of Bette? We would be very grateful.
of course if you make it in America you made it in the whole world.. with so many ethnic groups and nationalities it makes an artist well known in every corner of the world.
And the thing she said she didn't believe was that the judges were so surprised. But I'm sure it's because the judges on American Idol hear the candidates without an audience. I think Bette thought Britain's Got Talent did the same thing.

Your really great Susan

This an interesting video. But it skips, audio jumps and a lot of white noise.
GREAT VID:)
cheers
is that intended with the sound or has a mistake broken out
@zeldagirly22 who is Robin Williams? I just looked it up and I think they mean ROBBIE Williams -a HUGE Euro hit but never made it in the US.
@bonzelite On the contrary, Midler was far more supportive than what you're assuming... You must have a dislike in her to say that. wow..bette looks amazing
How stupid is the beginning of the video, why didn't you cut that ?
@dsteinmetz1 dieter, is that you from south africa, this is jorg getzschmann, living now in virginia beach, if not, apologies.
You do realize that Susan Boyle didn't sing Memory on that video correct? I have no idea where you got that. She sang "I dreamed a dream" from Les Miserables, which is an extremely religious piece. So I don't know what your big schpiel is about.
@zeldagirly22 who is Robin Williams?
Love Love Bette Midler
Anyone who doesn't recognize Bette Midler's talent doesn't know anything about music or performing and is not giving her credit for her incredible intelligence and verbosity. Just needs a retro 4/4 disco beat with obnoxious laser sounds and exploding water balloons with that intro.
Holy smokes! In this one interview, Bette Midler leads people to believe that all her "touching" and "sensitive" performances in the US for various charities were bogus.
Bette Midler is actually a very pretty woman now. when she was young she was always some kind of a happy clown to look at.
@cosg9531 I'd have to disagree! At 50 Bette had a much stronger voice than susan, and a hell of a lot more control.I don't understand why people are going off at Bette! She was asked what she thought, and spoke highly of Susan!
Interesting necklace set Miss M used in this.
Thought I was tripping for a moment then!
The start of this drives me nuts!! lol!!
What Bette said might have been a faux pas, an open-mouth-insert-foot moment which she cringed about when she heard it. She's probably used the term about herself even after her success. what does robin williams have to do with susan boyle?

@TreasureOne thank you!!
It is also a trigger for ppl with Epilepsy.
@MrChinesecrested what on earth are talking about, Bette speaks highly of Susan and simply questions the set up of Xfactor
what is WRONG with this video???? skipping, audio jumps, white noise?? wTF!!!
Video starts at 3:32
Bette's comment about Susan Boyle and her choice of a "faith based" song is ridiculous. "I Dreamed a Dream" says just the opposite of a dream realized. Totally agree. That comment from Bette was so revealing. Bette has been a star too long and has lost touch with reality.
@dixiedragon54 Yeah, Bette Midler gives away her values there.
@butimar68 she is just her very frank self - she actually says: "...basically, had no life until she..." (in terse video) all her comments are also sympathetic - and astute - i haven't heard anybody publicly quizzing the (apparent lack of) logic of that "you tube" video (come on!)
it's a bit hard to appear sweet when they don't want you to... mind you (!), by any merit, Bette Midler is far more successful entertaining artist than all the judges on "that particular show" together
This is the future.....
Just wanted to say Bette Midler is my fav female singer!!! :)
just to correct what i say in reply to @butimar68:
there is a sense of proportion lost here - by any merit, if of any relevance, Bette Midler is a far more accomplished entertaining artist than all the judges on "that particular show", and quite possibly all alike shows, together
she may not appear sweet, but what she is saying is frank and sympathetic - in any case (even with better video), she is not famous for her "sweetens" but for quick wit... and quite a number of other things :)
It's broken who can fis it?
@dixiedragon54 I think what she meant was that in comparison she had no life. In comparison to what she was before the show and after, she may have been content but you cant tell me her life was exciting.
That was a very ego-driven statement saying that Susan Boyle had no life before she came on the show 4:04
She HAD A LIFE!! It may not have been a glamorous/rich one but it was a life nonetheless. Apparently Bette Midler forgot what her 'life' was before she made it big. SMH.
The first minute should have been 'exiled' for sure! GOD that was horrific if a sound team tried to make that sound "modern"...EPIC FUCKING FAIL!!!

Bette shows up at 3:35... just be patient. :)
I so want to meet bet
aidrian and christine are out there depth
Jealous? You guys have got to be kidding.
Bette you're so politically correct you can almost hide you're just waffling but I love YOU !
@decolady2 Yes, it's totally surreal..... I love it. A new art form! YEH!!!
someone has messed with this!!! YT pay attention!!!
To any idiots comparing Bette Midler with Susan Boyle you must be crazy Bette Midler is a world star Susan is an average singer.
LOLLL just like "come out" by steve reich
Bette is living proof that just because your talent is abundant it doesn't make you a empathic caring and insightful individual. She should stop doing interviews.
the first section sound like a subliminal hypnosis.. repeating MAKE A LOT OF COFFEE / COPY.. an urge to copy ilegally? or drink alot of coffee?
@zeldagirly22 Yeah, that was just bizarre.
Does she say Bollocks?
Whatever that disastrous noise is at the beginning, it was enough to make me stop the video and move on without watching.
@zeldagirly22 Robbie Williams, maybe?
Is the uploader trying to be smart . Didnt work .
WHAT THE ---? I could not hear ANYTHING of this. Am I stupid or WHAT?
Skip ahead to 1:09
Translation! I'm Jealous of Her Like hell! NEXT!!!
Terrible video you need to redo it OP. I skipped to Midler but there were still problems. And she didn't throw Susan under the bus, in fact she likes her voice. I would like to hear what Bette thinks about Jackie Evancho's voice.
You rock
Jayzusssssssssssss!! what an awful lot of misunderstandings I see on the comments below
i felt sea sick watching this
Saying someone has no life is judgemental and presumptuous and there ain't no getting around that. Bette needs to shake the cobwebs out of her head because that was classless and revealing. She is a great singer but needs to work on her humanity.
Oh yes she did.
sounds like that illuminati stuff at the beginning saying "make coffee" lmao hahaha or "mecular copy"
At this point in Bette Midlers career why would she feel the need to be so ignorant is beyond me. I would think she was raised better than that.
What the hell is going on in this video??
No I think she meant she had NO LIFE. Susan pretty much said that herself she lived with her cats and never been kissed....
Video is broken, please remove. Skips, repeats, farts noises. Ow.
What did you do? Stab your computer?
awesome video - terrible upload
@dieseldog00 who cares what midler thinks. susans voice is far superior.
Susan Boyle had plenty of training. Bette is ignorant to her background and upbringing. She doesn't get it. I think if Bette looked at herself in that interview she would be wincing. This is not one of Bette's finer moments. I will give her a pass. She is better than this.
hoppin' make a luv pin
I've always thought Bette was a brilliant actress/performer, but here she comes off a little self righteously I would say.
You do have wrinkles when your over 60, you do even have wrinkles when your 40.. TO MUCH SURGERY!
I am not so sure she did admire Susan. She seemed a bit snarky to me.
she basically had no life???? wow that's snobbery. Susan Boyle herself said she led a content life. She wanted to be a singer but she never claimed not to have a life it was just a very calm settled life without the cameras, the fame, the attention and she supposedly loves to return to her quiet life after the zoo of fame
stupid beginning almost stopped listening.
