    Game Description -
Arcs is a sharp sci-fi strategy game for 2-4 players, set in a dark yet silly universe. Ready yourself for dramatic twists and turns as you launch into this galactic struggle.
    Seize the initiative:
Take actions with multi-use cards. Copy the leader, pivot to new tactics, or take the initiative for next round. Timing is everything.
    Declare ambitions:
In each game, you define the objectives that everyone competes over to win.
    Crush your foes:
Amass your navy for battle, plan your strategy with three kinds of dice, then roll them all at once to resolve the battle in a flash.
Each game contains a hundred wooden ships and agents, 18 custom engraved dice, a beautiful six-panel board, and tons of cards with over 60 pieces of unique art.

Seems a little odd to express skepticism of another site’s review without first playing the game yourself. Looks like you wanted to capitalize on the recency of their video rather than actually play the game to reach an informed opinion. Disappointing.

Honestly I get your trepidation. I have definitely found that I do not always agree with reviewers. For example with susd, I did not agree with their opinion of cosmic encounters. On the other hand, I agree with their oath review and disagree with your own. I think the is something to be said for seeing how seeing a review can reflect your own preferences, even where you respect the reviewers opinion, as I know you respect susd. In my opinion it is okay to say "susd loving it could be a bad sign for me loving it" because that is a reflection of how your taste often differs from their own. Plus your difference of experience in oath is a good indication considering it is the same gentleman from susd who reviewed both.

The title of the video is questioning SU&SD's claim. But this video is an unboxing.
I don't think you can answer that question with an unboxing compared to their 40+ plays ;) Not saying they are right and you are wrong.. just saying the title is misleading.
I have played twice. To me it's on a spectrum from Root to Oath. Sitting closer to Root than Oath. The trick taking part of the game that sets your actions for that round has a lot going on and I can see people feeling things are out of their control and thus not like the game. You will set better expectations on yourself if you think of it as one action per round and maybe one or two rounds per turn you will be able to do more. As you get better at the game, you will be able to engineer or predict those multi action rounds better.
It's also very reactive. Your opponents can do things to you on their turn and you don't get much counter play while they are doing it. Your chance to do that is on your turn. And the way VP are scored is when someone chooses for something to be worth points. You might not have been working toward that thing, but now that it's actually worth something, maybe you should pivot your plan to work on that new thing.
Like expecting to only get one action a round, maybe also expect to be reacting to the board each round more than directing the board. But you will probably have a few key rounds where you do switch form reaction to directing the other players.
With those expectations, your first games may feel better.

Absolutely do not start with the expansion! The base game is phenomenal and very deep and there are lots of things to learn about the flow of the game and building towards the ambitions that are crucial to have a grasp on before moving to the expansion. I'd play at least 3 or 4 games before even thinking about the expansion. It adds at least double the rules and lots more objectives to go after. It's not impossible for sure but much harder to know how to work towards any of the campaign objectives without already knowing how to play the game itself (the ambitions and everything about the base game is still present)

To answer your question in the video, definitely play the box first. The action selection is unique enough and hard to really use effectively. So it’ll take at least one game to really understand what’s going on with it and then you can add leaders and get into the campaign. Of course, if you think your group really understands the game off the bat, then you can include leaders in the first game, but I really don’t suggest it. I hope you enjoy the game.

So I was skeptical of Arcs too. But I really love Root and I actually like Oath so I was just trusting that Cole Wehrle would make a good game. I got the base game, leaders and lore pack and the campaign box but skipped the miniatures pack cause I like Leder Games wooden pieces. I'm glad I did cause I'm not a fan of the miniatures either. I like the wooden pieces way better. I've played about 8 games of the base game and I really like it. I've yet to break open the campaign other than organizing it and reading the rule book. I would say give base game Arcs a few games. It can feel limiting in the actions that you can do until you figure out how to work the cards and the resources. Everything is really straight forward but how to properly maneuver the mechanics takes a game or two. I would say learn how to spend your resources. I have found also that Resource tokens are like candy. Especially when you learn how to combo them. If they are being collected for a declared Ambition save them in your holds but if they're not being used for a declared Ambition this chapter, spend them for their prelude actions. That way you can do more things during your turn. The rule book says to play base game first and to not worry about leaders or lore cards until you've played that first game or two. That way you can better understand how the mechanics work and understand the significance of the Leader and Lore powers. (Which are crazy powerful) The Campaign adds a few more systems on top of all that to make an epic space trilogy that I have yet to play. I've watched some gameplays. Even still both base Arcs and Leader and Lore Arcs are great experiences. Also Arc's dice are probably my favorite dice. Root dice are very simple and straight forward which I like. Oath dice are often way too swingy and OP lol. Arcs dice are the best of both worlds in that you can chose how risky you want to be and they're very simple to read. I had two battles yesterday where I was on my last card and I needed to raid another player to steal their relics. I nearly destroyed my fleet but managed to grab 3 keys and steal the relics I needed. Thus stealing the win and landing myself 15 points for Keeper. Then in the last chapter I tried to do it again and raid only to destroy their cities thus provoking outrage on relics thus losing all the relics I needed lol.

PS: I was hoping for more flavor text too. But Cole Wehrle has said on camera that he doesn't think games a good narrative platforms and thus tries to make the gameplay what drives the narrative of the game. Which I sorta agree and disagree with Wehrle. But because of that philosophy I like how he tries to do game storytelling differently through player's making the story with their actual actions. That being said: I have seen Cole Wehrle actually say the base game is kind of like the prequel to the campaign. Like the base game is various space societies trying to conquer the reach and build the most powerful empire. While the campaign takes place in that empires future where that empire has begun to decay as a terrible blight has begun to infect the Reach. Thus the players are now various factions of the empire that begin to jockey for new power as the empire crumbles in its time of crisis.

I do agree with some of the comments on the title of this video, but whatever.
I also agree on the quality of the miniature wash. I love miniatures but these were just not for me. The wash just sort of looks dirty and doesn't sink into cracks to emphasize the shapes the way you would hope. I think the wooden components are nicer (my preference).
You definetely need to play this game and try to accept it on its own terms to find out if you like it. It's not like anything else. It will dissappoint if you expect it to function like something you know. It doesn't. it is HARD. I don't mean to say it is complicated (although it is a bit complicated), I mean it is demanding. It doesn't hold your hand. You don't get to simple select actions. You have to BATTLE the other players in a very cerebral way when you "select" an action and you CAN GET BEATEN. You get dealt a hand of cards that might not be conducive to doing what you planned on doing. Instead, you will have to look for what that hand can do it capitalize on that. It is VERY different, but I personally LOVE IT.

Jesse, some of the comments on bbg and here are out of line. I watched the video, I don't think you said anything about SU&SD that was offensive. SU&SD are not tossing and turning at night because you claimed that your gaming tastes don't always line up. Also I have seen other content creators say "channel x and I don't have the same taste," and NO ONE went after them. I would say that I wouldn't have responded to the criticism on bbg. You weren't gonna change their mind, all they wanted to do was fly their white knight flag.

@@dcrbdh yes, this is often the case. Idk, I’m tiered of the nonsense though. So, I respond when and where people are spreading it.
Maybe, in the future, I’ll just go on with my self and keep working on my own life.

I personally passed on this one because Oath didn't hit well with my group. I've tried to play Oath solo and haven't been able to get into it, and Arcs doesn't even have a solo mode. I'll be interested to see your thoughts once you've gotten a few games in, as my tastes align with yours in a lot of ways. Enjoy!

I'm not sure exactly where all the negativity is coming from, but it seemed pretty obvious what you were gonna be talking about and that there would be boxes opened.
That being said, I hope you actually enjoy the crap out of this game! It looks pretty cool from everything I have recently learned about it.

Why not call it "Arcs Unboxing" instead of this clickbait title. You ask a question in your title you can't answer in 20 minutes, because you didn't even play it. Feels like you just want a piece of the cake, since SUSD hyped it and now you are trying to farm some clicks with a horrible clikcbait title.
