- We have had a banner year so far with rainfall. So much in fact that we are already dealing with rattlesnake issues from the dense weed growth. With visitors due to hit the farm what's a natural way to deal with this? We're also expanding the outbuilding for more space under cover.

Another option with the radishes is to roast them...toss them with olive oil and salt, then pop them in the oven! So easy! Cooking them takes out the bite. So delicious! 😋 I love doing this with watermelon radishes. Sliced and roasted they look amazing too!

We are in California, Los Angeles county. It’s still pretty cold here at nights so only our stone fruits have some fruits. I actually started filming our newly remodeled backyard garden after watching your videos for about a year or so. Mine are not nearly as nice as yours though.

Hey Daryl! Yes, that roof extension was a long time coming. We had our first event of the year today and seeing everyone up there enjoying the shade, brought joy to the heart of these farmers!

One good thing with all that green is, it gives what rain you do get more time to seep into the ground under it. Instead of washing over top of the hardpack that used to be there.
Very, very true. It's one of the reasons we have so much of it around the farm this year. Keeping roots in the ground holds more water...which makes more roots!!

This is the first year we're really starting to see all of the green coming in nice and heavy. The rain this Spring has really helped that!

Awsome stuff! my radishes and bok choy this year all bolted.....am enjoying the turnips and carrots...our mulberrless trees have gone full shade...enjoy them....we just get green ones....i don't fig it out but our figs are awesome this year.....thx for the knowledge!

I’ve been mowing all morning, just came in to eat something and decided to watch a couple videos while I ate, lol. I know spraying would make my life so much easier but I’m with you guys and won’t do it either. I’m just not a fan of poisoning everything I don’t want on my property. If we get the giant flying cockroaches outside again this summer that may make me reconsider, lol, those were freaky last year. All this rain we’ve had the last couple years has really allowed the weeds and bugs to thrive.
Ok, giant flying cockroaches?? I will say, if those start coming around and Lori sees them, it will be all out warfare, no holds barred!!

We didn't get it on camera, but we had our first rattler of the season the day after we shot this. We have a few gopher snakes around here also, don't mind those at all!!

Might want to make two more chicken tractors. That's just too many birds to one tractor. 😳
We will have to figure out something eventually, but these are designed to hold 30-40 birds and they're at 35 each right now. At this point we're moving them twice a day to keep fresh grass under them.
@@EdgeofNowhereFarm I've seen other folks start off with that many, only to dial it down to 25 to give the birds a bit more room. Cornish crosses are notorious for walking problems and health issues, and crowding increases stress and the risk of illness. Happier birds are healthier and tastier birds.
Also, given the context of the desert, the temperatures (and monsoon season humidity), that many bodies in one space can generate too much heat. Unless you're only doing meat birds in the spring and fall, that is.
@@xianvox22 we only run 2 batches, 1 in Spring and 1 in Fall. That way we don't see any heat stress. Those times of year are nearly ideal temps for these guys.
I used to tune in for the figs, but, I'm really starting to like all the other stuff you guys do. Those are the BIGGEST radishes I've ever seen.. I like those in salads, unlike Guavas.. those I just can't find a use for.. what did you guys plant in the place of the guava trees??

Curious as to how much water are you able to collect and store and what's your farm's water consumption like. Great video!
We don't store any rain water as the costs (in infrastructure) to store the amount would be very high. That's why we divert catchment into growing areas, so at least we're utilizing it as opposed to it running off. As for the amount of water we use, I don't have a solid number. This past Winter season we only irrigated a couple of times, so it was much lower than the year before.

Yeah, we had always planned to only have 2 goats and were talked into Lily by our breeder, so we decided to get back down to just the 2 we planned for. We're going to try and get updates on all the animals over the next few weeks now that "vlog season" is back in full swing for us!
Why would you not leave the weeds? The ground wants to be covered - a weed is subjective.
We forgot to discuss it in the video, so we tried to include that reasoning in the description and thumbnail. The primary reason is we have regular visitors on the farm and can't leave growth high like that. The day after we shot this footage we had our first rattle snake of the season and with little kiddos (and the general public) wandering the farm during our events we have to take every precaution we can and remove their natural habitat. That's also why we only cut them back and don't remove them completely. That ground is still covered for a while until everything dries up completely. 😉
You need to update the drone video since you have many trees now.
Yes, we typically do that in the Spring once all of the trees have completely come out of dormancy...and we're staying in longer during the day with the heat!!

How do you like the Dewalt mower for weeds on your property? Im trying to decide between a push weed trimmer and mower for our 1 acre desert property in Buckeye. Love Dewalt products but not sure that mower can handle uneven terrain. Thanks!
The dewalt mower does good for us and it has large back wheels that can take uneven terrain. The only caveat is you will go through batteries fairly quickly. We're able to get through about half of our pasture on 1 set of batteries. Oh and the string trimmers by DeWalt are GREAT!

Curious why you prefer to have the roots from the weeds remain in the ground? Is it just to help with dust and erosion or to add organic matter or something?
Great question and you touched on a few of the reasons. The primary reason is the roots penetrate the soil which allows water to come behind and do the same, so it's a natural way to hold more water on the property...which leads to more organic matter and more green!
We spent the morning cutting an acres worth of stinknet. It is awful. Smells so bad and the seeds are everywhere now 😖 any advice?
you have to pull it roots in all - the wife n I did half an acre 3 yrs ago - which was brutal on our bodies. Bad thing is the seeds keep blowing in every season. Just do your best!
We know just how you feel and I can't say I know a surefire way of getting rid of it. We were cutting it back ourselves!!

What's your opinion on hot vinegar, and dish soap sprayed on weeds, as a weed killer?
We haven't tried it and our space would require a lot of it (can't imagine the smell of that much vinegar 😂😂). I have had several folks here locally tell me it does pretty well for spot treatments.
@@EdgeofNowhereFarm , it works like you would expect any acid to work on contact. It doesn't poison the plant. That's why many people heat the vinegar, to add to the burning of the plants. Some people add salt as another corrosive, but I don't think we need anymore salt in Arizona 🌵 soil.
The soap just helps to cut the surface tension so the acid can come to better contact with the plant. So it's better to start when the plants are small.
Or if time has gotten away from you, the best time to apply is right after you mow. The logic is to kill the plants before they seed. That way next year's grow would be less because there are less seeds. By mowing many plants have adapted by growing seeds down low... below the height of the mower.
With your method you will continue to have as lush or greater growth in every new year. I've been targeting my weeds each year and now I'm down to just a couple of species. I also focus spraying the edges where the mower can't reach, that way I don't have to string trim.
Yes, it smells like pickles until it evaporates... about 15 minutes. If I remember correctly, vinegar adds nutrients to the soil. 💖🌞🌵😷
Why would you not want to contain and store water? If you could use on garden, livestock, and as a backup should you ever have a water emergency? Even diverting to a pond/basin? Pipes break, contamination happens, you must surely use alot of water there and I would think even a days backup could be a huge bonus should a problem ever arise? Also to help fray the cost?
You're making great points. I'm not sure where you're located, but here in the Phoenix area we have single digit humidity most of the year, so basins (which are all over the city) are completely dry except for a very brief period of time immediately after heavy rainfall events. Many years they are completely dry year round depending on how much rain we get at any time. The only viable option for storage would be to fully contain it, usually underground. Those costs are just too high given they will not be used the vast majority of the time. As for storage for the animals, we always keep our water barrels at least half full which is several days worth of storage for the critters. Wouldn't want them going thirsty if we lose water for a day or two.
Why not let the goats out in the orchard for weed control
It's funny. We forgot to include the footage, but we actually have weeds growing INSIDE the goat enclosure and they don't touch them! Eventually we plan on adding sheep that will be able to take care of a lot of this for us. Especially in areas outside the orchard.
So I have a question for you and all the other farmers in Arizona. I'm reading that TSMC is building a massive semiconductor plant in your state. However, semiconductor manufacturing utilizes a great deal of water, which makes me question the logic of building a manufacturing plant in a desert. Has anyone in your local government explained any of this to you and the other farmers and what their plans are for rationing this scarce resource called water? Do they even have a plan? I'm curious to what your take is on this issue.
I have the same concerns and have not heard a realistic answer from the local government on their plans. The bigger problem is the Federal funding that is driving it. So of course, the money is flowing and nobody is addressing the bigger issue long term. While they're not drawing from our aquifer (and the current Governor has halted further mass expansion in/around our area for the time being), we have millions of folks depending on the same water coming from the Colorado river. It's not just an AZ issue as there are MULTIPLE large projects like this in AZ as well as other SW states (TX).

Well, I really hope "their" plan isn't to cover this up and screw over the locals for the sake of bringing in jobs to the state. Please stay on top of this and get the word out. I have very little confidence in the government to do anything right these days. Wish y'all the best.

Agreed - not the smartest dress attire for those duties. Enclosed toes, pants of some sorts & t-shirt & long sleeve, bandana & hat n gloves is what I do for weed eating/mowing.chainsaw work! Even in this heat!
SoCal born and raised, we try to do everything in flip flops if we can!

Unfortunately, our goats won't eat any of the weeds, at least when they're green. Their enclosure is currently full of perfectly healthy mallow and they walk right past it! Sheep is in our future as they actually prefer the greens.
How can i get rid of prarie dogs?
Oh boy, that is a GREAT question and we haven't really solved it. This year we have barn cats for the first time and they are already starting to snag these little demons from their dens. We've used poison in the past and it is effective, but we've since stopped that as it's not really something we want on the farm.

Rain gutters need your own water tanks and irrigate the place for free, even filtering it to. The animals and trees. Don’t wast even that water, it’s a sin.
