With what you showed us, I was able to understand what was happening inside and just by applying some CLP oil and tapping my Gearwrenches a little with a small hammer I was able to free them without opening them up. Thanks!
I'm toying around with designing one of these in CAD and finding specs of the internals is surprisingly hard, this video was really useful to give an idea of the internal dimonsions, thanks. As a side note, why would anybody with the mindset of 'just buy a new one' be watching any form of repair video in the first place?
Thanks to the video mate, I have a handful of gear spanners with internal snap rings to repair and for the life of me could not think of how to get in, you have saved me hours of frustration.
I used 2 old style razor blades the really thin ones to get the lock clip out. I was also lucky to be working on a new 28mm that fell apart during a very important project. It’s great to be able to fix things
When you put that spray in the cap I was trying to find one when I came across a pill bottle rather than trying to find a cap. It worked out really good for this situation but I still have to fix the wrench. Cap would work out for dumping it all the time. Thanks for the video
I have a half inch and a 5/8s,,and the half inch got peed on by a cat and froze up and I mean solid. I soaked it in kerosene and it finally broke free. I washed it in dawn liquid soap and the mess cane out cranking it over and over while rinsing in hot water. Blew it out with air, greased it like you do a bearing,,, works great again. Thanks for the video though,,, I saw no way of getting it open to repair it. 👍👍👍
You are so so right!! 10mm! I just bought a 10 adj gearwrench ratchet, I needed it for my 97 ranger fan/waterpump bolts... The adjustment is stuck.. So after just roughing through it turn by turn... I come inside and your video was the first I watched... Some people will just warrenty.. And or bug another... But I discovered this evening since our auto stores are discontinuing that brand.. They won't. I will be following your lead on this... Just because. And cleaning my others with the parts cleaner as well. Ty very much for the video. Subscribed.
Nothing like the aggregation of foreign chemicals absorbed through the skin over a lifetime. Have you seen the new "XL" gearwrenches? Westward has XL ones too. As nice as the old ones are the new ones are GORGEOUS. Longer and thicker shaft, and still made in Taiwan.
So many gear wrench variations out there today. Most are very well made and incredibly cheap to buy. I would day they are all made in either China or Taiwan.
The common misconception with warranty these days is that "Lifetime" means forever, this is not the case, "Lifetime Warranty" refers to the reasonable expected lifespan of the tool. At my work the time frame we apply is roughly 10 years depending on the tool type, we have a level of discretion that we can apply to cases where we believe the tool has not done the work to warrant end of life.
chriscat85 I guess this means the shop was outta work, and he can't get paid for passing anymore training sessions / already has all his ASE's. On the other hand, if 12.5 minutes with parts sped up, (is that a word, sped?) is actually like 45-55 minutes, and he can earn roughly $32-$67 per hour, then it is the definition of diminishing returns. That being said, the knowledge is the valuable part, I bet this guy will fair hella well when the zombie apocalypse hits in 2043. (P. S. 2043 zombie apocalypse #first)
More like 20 minuets, and you are right time is money. I guess I could have driven 1.5 hours to the store and bought a new wench, or I could have ordered a new one online and had it in at least 3 days but more likely 7 days. Was it really a waist of time?

I was just pointing out that the warranty process is pretty simple on the ones I’ve broken. These are pretty inexpensive anyway. After watching the video, I took one apart for the fun of it.
You’re supposed to pop it out with a hammer you need to slide it down A round punch if you can and then tap it out . If you’re going to take it apart for fun you’re going to have to replace the lock clip
Incorrect. See: Ave's breaking test of these wrenches. Also see: Ave's breaking test of 3/8" drive ratchets. These gearwrench style box ends will take almost TWICE as much torque as a snap-on 3/8" drive ratchet before failing. ~380 ft/lbs. I was babying mine until I saw that too. They're great for cranking on. They way they're designed metal itself has to fail structurally to break. I wouldn't hesitate to do the old two-wrenches hooked together cheater bar with them at all now.
...sh*t, s.o.b., G*d@mn, f*ck, was some of the things I uttered trying to get the spring and ball back in my ratchet after taking it apart to clean it, and I don't normally go around cursing...took about 15 attempts....you must be well disciplined to not utter such things while taking apart these gearwrenches...looked like a royal pain and took you quite a long time to dig that snap ring out...I haven't tried taking mine apart yet, but they probably need it...

I tried to take apart By banging the barrel with a socket... No success but wrench worked again...

Whith those ratchet not unlose a very tight bolt and also not tigh to much this is reason for demaging them.
The reason for the damage on this tool was age and corrosion. Not over exertion .

What lube do recommend for the Gearwrench?
WD-40 to keep any water from rusting the spring a paw.
Or you could just buy a new one
