I LOVE this interview, it's so good to hear Ryan talk from a position of calm maturity and not dismiss his early behaviour or music as folly but as part of who he is. Kept wishing he wasn't being interrupted quite so much as I wanted to hear him tell the stories and not lose his flow.
I have Meniere's disease and he is the only musician I've heard talk about it. My vertigo episodes often occur in spring. I learned a lot about other ways to treat and live with it other than treating nausea and carefully monitoring sodium. I never knew this about him, it only makes him appreciate him more.
I saw Ryan about a year ago and he did this 4-5 minute song about a badger off the top of his head and it was so funny. Not only a great songwriter but very smart, well spoken, funny and down right charming. A true giant in the world of music.
I remember nearly a decade ago maybe a decade Ryan had a sorta meltdown where he stated in an interview how he didn't understand why he wasn't more successful than he was given the amount of material he's put out and it's quality blah I remember thinking I would feel that way as well if in his shoes and I remember thinking Ryan's really cursed creatively and I can relate on a way that I know what it's like to have an old artist's soul that chucks out more ideas than the mind /body paradigm can keep pace with. That's how I interpreted his public complaint in the press Years later there's no debate He's reached legend status and the music will be immortal God bless Ryan Adams and fans
The funny thing on the Bryan Adams story - when Ryan played the Ryman last year, he covered 'summer of 69' as one of his encores. Kid is a class act. Funny, personable and real.
One of the greatest - perhaps the greatest - songwriter(s) of my generation just doesn't deserve this ear issue. So glad he's still able to write and record and is working through it.
You think he might be the greatest? Hmm. I mean great music is objective as well as who is the “greatest.” I can see why one would think he was. I think he’s rlly good… scratch that, I think he’s a great songwriter… brilliant. IMO his ‘ole buddy Jason Isbell is up there for sure. (old buddy now cause of the way Adam carried/presented himself around a couple handfuls of women like his ex or Phoebe Bridgers.. which was so young at the time. He basically used his power to try and take advantage) John Moreland, Conor Oberst and my personal favorite, Elliott Smith. I’d def put Adams in my top30 for sure, though. I mean, almost every song is a hit. The others tho are mehh. He always strikes out or hits a home run. Once again just my opinion.
Regardless of Jian's poor decisions, you really can't deny he was an excellent interviewer. It's too bad he's not on Q anymore, but for reasons I totally understand.
This is a fantastic interview...loved the story about the Bryan Adams heckler. Ryan Adams is the real deal...amazing songwriter, beautiful voice and funny as hell, doesn't get much better than that!
Could he be any more adorable!? I love this man! His art has evolved beautifully and his new life looks good on him! Best 48:41 I've spent in a long time.
He never ceases to amaze me....drawing inspiration from all music genres and being completely honest about it regardless how kooky it may seem. I mean who wears an Iron Maiden airbrushed leather jacket on David Letterman playing a tender piano verson of New York? His "Wasted Years" cover is fantastic by the way. Check it out on TH-cam if you haven't already.
I had never heard of this guy before, and caught half the interview when it was on Q a few months ago, and became an instant fan. This is one of the best interviews I've ever heard from Ghomeshi... sad they cut out the part where Ryan tells Jian as much.
Bizarre. Fairly big hits. Airplay. Brilliant. Some people are only exposed to the mainstream I guess. Sad for you/them. Glad you got lucky and found real art
I dated BA, Emmylou Harris' ex-husband a d producer for 8 years. I was in Mobile AL at Ryan's concert and when the room was quiet I said "Please play Wonderwall tonight" and Ryan told me off from the stage in front of everyone in the theater. Then later he began to play the song and everyone was clapping and I said we love you Ryan! Ryan instantly stopped playing the song and everyone was disappointed. The scene at the Ryman was true in the way the reporter wrote it. Just sayin' I love his music but he is full of himself!
Ryan looks good, I guess marrying Candy Girl Mandy Moore has been good for him..He is Pure Greatness, been following his music since the Whiskeytown days...
Either you love Ryan or you dont care at all. Your loss our gain, best song writer and beautiful guitarist as well. I seen him and cardinals once. I wanna see his acoustic show, i always loved his acoustic demos etc. Ryan is a genius in my book, thats why he is so strange and weird. That strange and weirdness keeps him from the real world bull shit and he is able to come up with great music and ideas...love your music Ryan
I hate the person but the songwriter is def one of the best. The best? Well that’s just a matter of opinion but I prefer the ‘ole friend that crashed on his couch to detox. Basically Adam’s letting Jason Isbell detox at his house gave the world one of the greatest alt-country/Americana albums of all time in “Southeastern.”
HEY I SUFFER FROM PANIC ATTICS AND ALL THAT GOES WITH IT I TAKE MEDS THA HELP BUT MU LIFE IS DIFFRENT, TODAY THERE WAS A SONIC BOO,M AND IT MDADE ME GREAK OUT WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN.ITS NICE TO HEAR SOMEONE WHO SUFFERS THE SAME WAY. DEBORAH ALYCE DIDCOT
Ok Im serious now here, I think when he said 'tractors with wheels of cheese' he mustve been thinking about the hankerin' for a hunka cheese commercial/psa from the late 70s. Right? Where else would that come from
I have heard though that real Sea Salt is actually good for vertigo, like the stuff that is still brownish! It's the Iodized stuff that is so harmful because the Iodine has been removed and then reprocessed into this disgusting white table salt shit!
Funny how he's talking about moleskines there and how he used to carry one of those around back in Heartbreaker days - coz I gave him one for his birthday last year and he never thanked me for it. NOW I get it. Seems he just doesn't want to be reminded of those days or something. Whatever, I just hope he didn't just throw it away...
great interview, but the interviewer can be kind of pushy at times when the dra pauses for a second to explain you something you dont start talking for them or demand a imediate responce. some parts were almost painful to watch almost like ryan was going to tell you off or say wtf dude give me a second.
I can turn off Bryan Adams, Ryan. Simply because there's something better to do. Ryan is diffident and contrary - he was a jackass junkie for years and now wants to revise perspective. Ryan, we were there when you were floppy - but keep on, 'cos you managed to survive in a good way.
Juniors summer of 69 will stand higher on any rock chart than any thing ryan has done to date! so stick to talking about ryan who is a very good musician and singer and don't slag on any other musicians!
I don’t know about that article but my uncle was huge in the alt-country/americana scene in the 90’s and told me personally Ryan Adam’s was… well is a HUGE dickhead. When I first read about Phoebe Bridgers and how folks told her that he was toxic and an ass that basically confirmed it to me. His music is obviously gorgeous tho. I can separate the artist from their art.
I like that he completely ignored the asinine question about supporting Mandy Moore". She's his wife, of course he supports her. lol. p.s. the d.j. in no capacity looks like Dave Grohl. lol.
Huge talent. Great songwriter. He s among the great american songwriters already and he s still young. Love the fact that s he s a metal head too🤘🏻
one of the best songwriters of our generation, maturity has only made him better
I LOVE this interview, it's so good to hear Ryan talk from a position of calm maturity and not dismiss his early behaviour or music as folly but as part of who he is. Kept wishing he wasn't being interrupted quite so much as I wanted to hear him tell the stories and not lose his flow.

Not so much a class act anymore. Def not a southern gentleman. Such a shame.
One of the greatest - perhaps the greatest - songwriter(s) of my generation just doesn't deserve this ear issue. So glad he's still able to write and record and is working through it.
Adam Stevenson

First I heard about this but I've always found him creepy. Knew there was something up with him
I miss him.
He was brilliant. And coincidentally acquitted on all charges in court too btw.
What a great interview
I met him in Eugene OR in Oct '11 after an amazing show. He is so nice, exactly as he is here. Love ya man!
I'm in the 0C rn
What venue did u see him in in Eugene ?
Eugene is getting grimey but is a special place and a great place to catch shows
Cheers😊
Jian Ghomeshi, you are a truly great interviewer - that's why you get so many amazing responses from the people you talk to. Kudos, man.
Love ryan adams! Great interview!
This is a fantastic interview...loved the story about the Bryan Adams heckler. Ryan Adams is the real deal...amazing songwriter, beautiful voice and funny as hell, doesn't get much better than that!
Good to see Ryan looking healthy and happy. LOVED this new album.
Good interview.
RYAN IS THE MAN!
Awesome interview. Ryan is so open and honest, and funny!
Howdy from a fellow J'viller, Ryan
Could he be any more adorable!? I love this man! His art has evolved beautifully and his new life looks good on him! Best 48:41 I've spent in a long time.
His musical knowledge is just outrageous.
Well said-totally want to see him play again (saw him in '08 w/ the Cardinals). He's so great and unique.
I wish Ryan would tour more on the east coast. We miss you buddy!!
Solid intwrview

❤
I heard he just started playing Bryan Adams summer of 69
The guy doing the interviewing is awesome.
Well....don't you feel silly now.
John Pilat Well, willythewave ain't necessarily wrong. It's just too bad Jian's alleged crimes might overshadow his good interviews.
@@PianoProse funny how both these men got in mad trouble
Great interview, both of you were really immersed, thank you!

I think Elliott Smith played on Letterman and he only had maybe 4 or 5 shirts. lol
When using my portfolio that potential is a forced issue: my storylines are not gendered for category
I feel ashamed when I listen to this and by the end their are tears in my eyes....pray for us sinners.

@@thezeek2745 unfortunately the artist wasn’t so much a of a gentleman. Who would make advances at a 20 y/o Bridgers??
i love this thanks ryan and jian
Ryan the man.!!
Talented as hell
I have Menieres Disease as well and he is such an inspiration to me!!!
Ewww it's hard watching Jian's interviews now. And he was so good at it.

@@louieo.blevinsmusic4197 Lots of Great Artists are not good people.
People can have problems and make mistakes, that doesn’t make them a bad person.

i think he is such a nice guy
Summer of '69!
yeah he is finally growing up
That's funny, I was there that night too. Pretty accurate.

"Love Me Gently" by Elvis??? I assume he means Love Me Tender. No wonder Ryan looks bemused at that question.

ValerieContest It's Joe Rogan pretending to be someone named Jian Ghomeshi whilst wearing a a bad wig.
+ValerieContest Jian Ghomeshi
Give me a jar of pickles!
"And you're supportive of her?"...."Well, uh yeah" Well no shit Jian...
The interviewer looks at Ryan like he really likes him. Maybe he's just like that normally.
Look up Arj Barker - the comedian...they are basically twin brothers.
Ryan Adams reminds me of Jughead from Archie comics...he seems like a funny guy.
Love Me Gently. Lol.
ROGER!
In the process of writing a song, Ryan will open a book and find the next line, nothing to see here either.
Love Ryan Adams and he is a great writer but don't be dissing Dokken.
Rick Moranis.
Lovely interview, but the radio DJ should let Ryan finish his stories instead of interrupting every 10 seconds.
