Thanks, i just bought an old 1990 trail boss 350 with 900 miles on, only fault with it was a slack chain but i couldnt see how to adjust it.

How much slack should we leave

I'd guess maybe 1/4" to 1/2" "up/down play", but always check with the manufacturers service manual
