This is a great interview. Beneath the kayfabe is some very real sentiment. R.I.P to Thunderbolt Patterson and Jim Wilson. They tried to make working conditions better for all wrestlers and for doing so they were slandered, attacked, and blacklisted.
We so need Dr. D to be a debate moderator. “That’s your damn time up buddy and if you don’t like it we’ve got a bus outside that’ll take you right back home to San Francisco!”
That Jim guy wasn't lying. Albano and Dr D was really defending professional wrestling til their death. They made sure not to slip and say what really goes on
Paul Heyman calling in to bash the guy on stage and discredit his experiences to protect kayfabe is hilarious. Dr. D, legendary racist, arguing with the Black dude and saying there was no discrimination in the business is comedy gold. Obviously we all now know that wrestling is fake, that there was rampant uninvited homosexual encounters by the promoters, that there was blading and racism...but the boys working so hard to protect the business was honorable, while at the same time tragic for the men who got raped, jobbed out for not playing politics, discriminated against, etc. Love how Captain Lou dodges the "real or fake" question by saying he doesn't know what other promoters do, but in his experience bookers always put guys who would win versus lesser guys to manipulate the outcomes. He sold that lie so well, even Mort bought it and didn't press the issue. Racism and man-rape aside, the world was such a better place when we believed wrestling was real. Morton Downey Jr. was a beast. His show was legendary!
Turns out that dude was right. Pat Patterson, a booker in the WWF, was known for pressuring wrestlers into having homosexual sex. He forced a young Roddy Piper to do it. Piper, in not so many words and on the verge of tears, admitted it

Wilson was a great guy who actually was smarter than the vast majority of wrestlers. He spoke out on the sexual harassment and blackmail that was rampant back then before anybody ever did. He wanted wrestlers to have an union and have benefits so they could safely retire with some form of financial security.
There's a story that Larry Zbysko tells of Capt. Lou cutting the heck outta his face, including his cheeks. Then, in the locker room, Lou splashed alcohol all over his wounds.

Dr. D. was a true badass. After the Geraldo incident, he was pretty much drummed out of the industry. He became a real life bounty hunter and bodyguard. I wouldn’t mess with that guy under any circumstances in his prime.

That was rare even at this time. Mort was probably the only guy doing that.
@@Requiescat_in_pace Not really. While it was Morton Downey's "gimmick" to chain smoke, the only reason it wasn't really done was because even in the 1980s, a lot of people found the notion of smoking in front of people semi-offensive. Many actors who smoke preferred not to have people see them smoking for similar reasons.

Dr. D comes from an era of pro wrestlers who were trained by taking severe beatings in barn rings every single day.

Well come to find out this guys was ahead of his time in exposing professional wrestling.
David shultz ended up hitting a reporter on the back of his head on a tv show in 1983 on pro wresting from orders from mcmanhon and got sued and fired!!
Look up Mario Galento radio interview in the early 70's, he exposed the business after he was blackballed by Jerry Jarrett and Jerry Lawler.
Dr. D protected more the business than the nowadays WWE roster all together!
Well he did a horrible job. Nobody thinks professional wrestling is real.
@@streetsofsouthphilly maybe if he never got fired the perception of the business would be different nowadays, the man took it really dead serious, plus: nobody doubted about how legit tough he was, at least back then...
@@fiskerboy2011 Oh he was legit tough and he cut such a good promo you wanted to see him get his ass kicked. Still, I watched this back in 1988 when it first aired. And it wasn't until 1992 but when the Ring Boy scandal broke in the wake of the Steroid Scandal it proved Jim Wilson was telling the truth. That Jim guy wasn't lying. Albano and Dr D was really defending professional wrestling til their death. They made sure not to slip and say what really goes on
You'd have to be stupid to believe a guy that's been proven to be a liar many times over.
Dr. D, David Schultz is still alive as of 9-29-24. 👍

Tony Atlas was a badass and $900 dollars a week was very good money back in those days. My best friend was Terry Gordy's cousin ,and we all played football together for Rossville high-school. Terry was making over a million dollars a year in Japan.
