Wizzards did not even give us a proper story this time. Thanks to channels like this one for putting bits and pieces together to bring us a lore summary.
If I had control over this set, I would have broken it into two sets: 1. The war of the gods 2. Rise of the titans. In the first I would have had a more fleshed out war between the gods with all the gods in some capacity (mythics and rares) except for Klothys, who would emerge in the story only for the first set at the very end to deal with the twisting of fate, Heliod would be imprisoned in the end as the real set shows. In the second set I would have Klothys as a card along with a few uncommon and maybe a rare white gods each newly formed from the mortals forming new white aligned beliefs. All of the titans would have cards as they emerge from the underworld and the gods are too separated to fight them back so they are free to destroy. Each Titan would be the opposite of what the gods stand for similar to the giants of Greek mythology. It would take the combined efforts of the gods, mortals, planeswalkers, and returned to return them to the underworld. Maybe a god or two will fade from the sheer power needed to defeat the titans leaving the spots for some new gods in the pantheon to replace them.
I agree, two sets would have been better. First set could have had 3 mono colored Gods and 2 titans with the allied colored gods as rares. Second set with the missing 2 mono colored gods and 3 more titians, with the enemy colored gods as rares.
I feel like this was the plan before the emergency need to break the sets due to Rivals of Ixalan or AER. I remember them not selling well. But I don't know I don't do mtg finance
There should have been at least 2 sets to Theros. One for the war and the second for the aftermath showing what the Pantheon is going to do about Heliod's betrayal and the empty spot left by his imprisonment
So i had this theory that the story of beyond death was gonna be phenax and ashiok working together to have him become the head of the pantheon. They would help elspeth escape the underworld and free the titans to cause havoc while in the background they work on making him more powerful. I also had the idea that ashiok was a ancient planeswalker who served the titans and would use elspeth's escape to distract klothys so they could free the titans. Reason on the whole working for the titans is cause the underworld corrupts and twists the soul who have been there for awhile hence ashiok being a old planeswalker. I thought Idylic tutor's art showed ephara but it makes more sense to be karametra. Great video!
If Phenax became the head of the pantheon, hypothetically, do you think he would make it known...or deceive everyone into thinking that wasn't the case? ;)
I would've definitely stopped the one block stories. The's just so much great lore and world building to fit in a single box, which became very disappointing, very quickly.
I want to write a D&D campaign that starts in the Theros block and ends with Xenagos's death in Journey into Nyx.... Unless the party wipes, then it'll continue in Beyond Death. The lore is just too deep not to explore.
I am currently writing a campaign that will take place right after the events of betond death. The plot holes are actually what really makes the writing process interesting, I get to choose what happened in the background!
Absolutely but I wouldn’t have done the heliods betrayal thing cause many players really hate dying and just killing them off in a cutscene wouldn’t be cool. What would be is if the party gets wiped then they come back as returned to see the chaos that Xenagos has caused on the plane and in Nyx
You forgot that Kruphix appeared on Enigmatic Incarnation, where we see him creating a chimera from nyx. This could have been an interesting information on what role Kruphix has in the war
Athreos makes sense for the story since he is the ferryman for the dead. He’s supposed to ferry souls to the underworld like Charon in the original Greek myth.
Not only that but his name is a little similar to Thanatos, while Hades in Greek Myth is the god of the underworld, Thanatos is Death personified. Sometimes depicted with a scythe. While Charon is the ferryman, taking people across the river Styx to be judged by Hades. Thanatos would take them to Charon, especially when the Fates said that their time was finally over.
Zaire Jordan there was a rumor floating around about how there were supposed to be all 15 gods and 10 dual colored titans in this set, but because of WotC and their outrageous deadlines and limitations a lot of them got cut
@@DrPlant-fg9yn that sounds like bullshit. How do you fit all of that into a single set? Wizards never printed a complete dual land cycle in a set (except for really old ones)
Well, what counts as poison? Could apples be poisonous if you eat so many you die? Does “poisoning of character” count? Can you poison an entire society by means other than chemical?
@@Fluffkitscripts When apple seeds are damaged, chewed or digested, amygdalin degrades into hydrogen cyanide. ...and yes, any normal consumable thing that is ingested, in sufficiently high amounts, can become poisonous (even regular foods). I feel like uncommon planeswalkers were a huge hit, and we'll see much more of them. The demigods were a swing and a miss, but not all of them are awful. Representing characters within a theme to cameo them makes sense with uncommon walkers and demigods though. I hope they continue doing this.
The demigods shouldn't have a new creature type, my opinion, it should have been: "Legendary Enchantment Creature - Human God" (or something else besides a whole separate type). Being their only opportunity to have lower CMC "god" tribal.

Also, thank you for pointing out the obvious flaw in the new set system. I really feel like there's a risk of the game getting too watered down if they don't proceed carefully. One of the major standpoints Magic has is its fleshed out story
Well for one thing, Keranos is a weather/Storm God and God of Ephanies, so he's like a Cross between Zeus' Storm aspect and a Muse, with a touch of Hermes, whereas Iroas is more like Nike mixed with Ares and/or Athena.
Magic is making blocks however big or small as they want. War of the spark was basically two sets, the two that dealt with the guilds being one, and war of the spark being its own. They found problems in sticking to a set number of blocks. It is a good idea, but they seem to have become obsessed over it in all the one block sets we are getting in 2020
Honestly would've gone back to the three set block.. Makes me sad everything is just one-offs..like for real would love to see a three set block story about eldrian return of the king 😭
So couldn’t Phenax technically be a god of Prophecy not deceit? Cause prophecies are very much either half truth, or cryptic truths that can be manipulated in your favor or against your enemies.
Matt Lynn i think black and blue would be better because of the duality, it could make you wise, or it could make you go mad and have ambition to try and cheat it.
Matt Lynn bingo! He’s basically the oracle of Delphi. She told half truths a lot. Famous ones Telling jason’s uncle that a man with one sandal would come and over throw him. Didn’t say it was Jason, and The story of Eros and Psyche. Told psyche’s father she’d marry an ugly monster, but in reality didn’t. Boom.
I do hope we find our way back to Theros with how the Pantheon plans to fill the vacancy in Mono-White. Also it would be cool if we shifted to the other Gods and the plot would be that Phenax would be scheming to lead the Pantheon.
Maybe the other Gods of Theros will show up in that Commander Legends set thing coming later this year. Plus they will all be detailed in Mythic Odysseys of Theros.
oh man! I have been looking for a while for the full all gods together art where did you get that pic in the beginning? I'd love a custom mat for my gods deck
Wizards is really struggling to find the right balance. 3 set plane stories ended up with a lot of filler cards because of so much design space to fill, and it also meant most of a year exploring a single plane meaning fewer chances for variety and appealing to fans who want something different. I think the 2 set blocks were fine, idk why they were abandoned, or at least I don't remember. It does at least rule out core sets The 1 set blocks gives us the most variety but leaves so much less room, I'm not really sure if its ideal. Maybe a 2 set top-down story block, a 1 set bottom-up block with more emphasis on mechanic concepts, and a core block, all each year would be the needed balance? Imagine 2 sets of Theros or Eldraine, 1 set of Ikoria, and then M21
I would have done a lot differently with this set, but as far as the gods go I’d have downshifted all the two-color gods to rare, with the exception of Klothys, who I’d have kept mythic as the buy-a-box promo.
Personally I wouldn’t have a war of the gods set i would’ve focused both sets on the titans so we could get a lot of cards to show them off. And since there are only five titans you could’ve had 7 gods in each set and maybe eight in the second
Is Iroas a centaur? I thought Iroas was a Minotaur but with a Centaur type body, because his bottom half is a bull not a horse. I especially thought this because him and Mogis are twin brothers
God twins are not like biological twins. More like their ideas that made them were conceived at the same time. Minotaurs represent more brutal aspects while centaurs are seen as more honorable
Aether Hub While i agree that is true, by the definition of a centaur, i don’t believe iroas counts as one. A centaur is half man half hoarse, Iroas is clearly half Bull like his brother, this is also what the book says and what has been confirmed by wizards(dougbeyermtg.tumblr.com/post/82092413247/doug-correct-me-if-im-wrong-but-im-pretty-sure). I dont know if being a reverse minotaur makes him closer to being classified as a minotaur or a centaur but his “twin brother” being a minotaur causes me to lean closer to that option. He definitely isnt half horse though, which makes sense because theros centaurs are white green aligned
It doesn't solve the problem for Theros Beyond Death... but consdiering how popular the gods are as commanders, I'm holding out hope that those who did not get new cards in this set will get them in Commander Legends. Though at this point, too, my list of things I hope to see there is too large for all of them to actually be in the set
You forgot Enigmatic Reincarnation for Kruphix. On top of it being blue/green, it depicts four hands around the chimera emerging, a hallmark of Kruphix. Also there's the name, "Enigmatic Reincarnation", as Kruphix is the god of Mystery. I just feel that that card has much more proof than idyllic tutor. Otherwise however, fantastic video.
They used to have three sets per block. Nine months was maybe too long to spend on one story or plane. Now they have one set per block. That is not enough cards and three months might not be enough time for one plane or story. I think they should compromise and have two sets per block and spend six months on a story or plane.
I dunno, I would much rather see 3 worlds this year and less Theros. Not because I dont love Therosm but because I also love Zendikar, and Ikoria sounds amazing. I would also say your nuts to do uncommon gods. Would they even be gods then? Maybe rare could work but even thats pushing it.
1 block sets are too small for the scope of the stories we get, 3 block sets feel like too much padding in the story. I feel like i dont know what the conflicts were on Dominaria, Eldraine, and Theros 2 even though I've bought a box and read the flavor text of every card. Whereas on Ixalan or Kaladesh or Amonkhet or Zendikar 2 or Innistrad 2 the story arcs feels deep enough and concise. A premise is given leading to a problem, then the problem erupts and our heroes attempt to solve them.
Kiyan Pardakhti Eldraine is easy it’s rowan and will becoming planewalkers as they got revealed in the set battle bound . Just rowan and will lore and first adventure as they get told begin a sacrifice as children and needing magic to save them after the ritual sacrifice happened needed with the twins therefore boom spark ignited .
Eh, perhaps the overprized, but under-available quasi-From the Vault rip-off known as Secret Lair shouldn't have been? Instead the fifteen original Theros gods could have appeared as the once announced Masterpieces in Theros Beyond Doubt. But Wizards of the Crush aren't exactly steady on their course, always going back on their word just to make a quick buck (and a half if they can). Who exactly asked that every year, every set should break the rules, expectations and promises?
@@AetherHub really sad the constellation drop is in Secret Lair. I would love to do the thing they do rn with the constellation arts: you use the constellation side while they're still only enchantments but flip to the regular art when they become creatures.
Unfortunately wotc does something really well but something really bad The good thing is creating ideas and the lore of said ideas for the players to explore. The bad thing is once they have these ideas, these concepts, they usually mess up trying to flesh it out. See the war of the spark novel
pan-ah-see Dang that ain't right in Greek or even its English adaptation. Not that it matters, I'm just a language nerd and I fixate on negligible things (But for whoever does care its Pan-ah-kay-ah as in Pan=All Akos=Cure, and in English its pan-ah-see-ah because English does not believe in the K sound in Latin or Greek even though English doesn't lack that sound at all)
I dont like the decrease in rarity. It made plainswalkers seem too weak. Then they made an op plainswalker n now elsbeth is super weak. I miss the other gods. They should stop this 1 block for everything nonsense. Yes some blocks should be 1. Some 2. Some 3. But we are losing more by constructing the number of blocks than we are gaining

Yeah but what about Xenagos?
They used to have three sets per block. Nine months was maybe too long to spend on one story or plane. Now they have one set per block. That is not enough cards and three months might not be enough time for one plane or story. I think they should compromise and have two sets per block and spend six months on a story or plane.
What happened to the god of sloder I wish I could see him
He's pinging you every turn with Torbran.
I think the set is fine and enjoy it.
Heliod got insecure.
Love me my snake mom was my first God I pulled
Mogis represent!
Kruphix is my favourite
Eh, perhaps the overprized, but under-available quasi-From the Vault rip-off known as Secret Lair shouldn't have been?
Instead the fifteen original Theros gods could have appeared as the once announced Masterpieces in Theros Beyond Doubt.
But Wizards of the Crush aren't exactly steady on their course, always going back on their word just to make a quick buck (and a half if they can). Who exactly asked that every year, every set should break the rules, expectations and promises?
TEAM PHARIKA FIRST TO COMMENT #SNEKTEAMBESTTEAM
(Let's pretend we also have first strike)
love me some snek lady!
@@AetherHub really sad the constellation drop is in Secret Lair. I would love to do the thing they do rn with the constellation arts: you use the constellation side while they're still only enchantments but flip to the regular art when they become creatures.
I will always have a soft spot for snake cultists.
First god I got. Was extremely sad they left her out of the set. #SNEKTEAMBESTTEAM
In sorry, but I have to point this out.
Athreos: (Ay-three-os)
Not autheros
Sorry. I love your content by the way
Oh come on, if Percy Jackson can get a movie by copying Greek Gods, why can't we get a movie of the Theros Gods!?
Stangg twin the card ..i mean aether hub man doing wizards of the coast job weekly of story and lore.I like male legendary creatures best bub
XENAGOS LIVES!!!!
This is the first I'm learning that they got rid of blocks. Not a fan of this decision.
Unfortunately wotc does something really well but something really bad
The good thing is creating ideas and the lore of said ideas for the players to explore.
The bad thing is once they have these ideas, these concepts, they usually mess up trying to flesh it out. See the war of the spark novel
pan-ah-see
Dang that ain't right in Greek or even its English adaptation.
Not that it matters, I'm just a language nerd and I fixate on negligible things
(But for whoever does care its Pan-ah-kay-ah as in Pan=All Akos=Cure, and in English its pan-ah-see-ah because English does not believe in the K sound in Latin or Greek even though English doesn't lack that sound at all)
Why do you keep saying Altheros
tl'dr in the second set
There is no second set my dude
@@AetherHub yes it is - in my heart & dreams :(
Athreos, not Atheros!
Yo give me my MFing Kruphix!
It's a 15 min video stop shoving so many ads jesus man. Love your content dont get me wrong. I dont mind ads. But this is excessive.
Athreos = a-three-ose, not a-ther-ose.
Down shifting would have been good
Just done new gods in a secret lair
It's spelled AthREos, not AthERos. Sorry for being a stickler.
Meh leh tees
