Good things to remember when trying Warcraft 1: - Archers are op - Catapults are even more op - Water elements... overpowered is an understatement - Your worst ennemies are bridge and narrow paths - Peon are stricly non-violent. They won't use their axe against nothing but trees. - In modern RTS, long distance mining is a desperate move. In Warcraft 1, it's the intended way to mine. - Injured orcs are injured forever. - Don't waste gold or build too many peons, there is a very limited amount on the map. I had a great time replaying this game for the first time after more than 25 years. It is the game that got me into RTS. It should be seen for what it is: a piece of video game history. It's like looking at a car from 1900.
Orcs has no healers until Warcraft 3. But you are completely correct. Also, once your town hall/great hall is destroyed there's no building it back up. Although from my experience only the AI can rebuild town hall/great hall. Which it is completely unfair.
At 35:28 when grubby restarts an orc mission it plays a human mission briefing. I like how he states spearmen are OP and then the next mission makes a ton of grunts and 2 or 3 spearmen. Also he's wrong about the music. I can sing a warcraft 1 or 2 song. I can't sing a warcraft 3 song to save my life because it's all just ambience.
I cannot tell you how much I loved this game as a young kid even though I could never beat it. Hooked me to Warcraft for life. I used to read the game manuals of Warcraft 2 & 3 just for fun 😂
This brings me back to my childhood 😢 Wc1 is a defensive game. It's better to bolster an army first and then attack once you have enough fire power. Catapults are crazy for both sides. Humans have water elemental and orc have demon summon. Those are basically the best units in the game you save up for and then wreck a city

I'm one of those few who played original Warcraft and enjoyed it for what it is. While War1R is totally playable, seeing the clearly rushed release not live up to its potential is rather sad. Some summary of the big issues: • Missing "Replay Introduction" button from the main menu. It also can play automatically in the original after some time if you stay in the main menu doing nothing: game either replays the cinematic or shows one of the few replays like War2. • Upscale of the cinematic itself is quite awful with noticeable visual artifacts. • Missing Multiplayer for two players. While very basic and therefore requiring reimplementation from scratch, it's still the part of the original game that should be present. • In-game visuals themselves were based on the raw 320x200 (16:10) while in fact it should be 320x240 (4:3) achieved via tall pixels. Grubby mentioned it on the stream, but still. Ideally, there should be an option to switch between two aspect ratios. • Missing animated elements in briefings, victory/defeat screen and endings. Briefings supposed to have animated characters alongside some room decorations with 3D map of the land at the end showing your progress throughout the war, victory/defeat screen load in your stats gradually and there's a small window with a scene playing. Endings particularly suffered from this simplified reimplementation as they straight up ditched the first scene (it should have two), which is animated one. This also completely ruins their passing. • No option for the original mouse control. This is just silly since all versions of Warcraft 2 have that, but not War1R. I would also argue that having an option to force the original unit selection limit would've been great to reenable some of the '"challenge" the original had. • In general, the remaster also lacks certain QoL features and settings options such as customizable hotkeys. I would actually recommend Grubby to try going through the same three missions in the original Orcs & Humans in the future. Just to see what it's like in the comparison.
Wow your analysis is very interesting. I own the original games on the GOG Galaxy platform. Is it better to play these games there, or the reforged versions are better in your opinion? I would be really grateful for an answer.
@@eleos11 If you simply grabbed the newest Battle Chest because it's a good deal and you have thoughts like "I have it, so might as well be done with it quickly", then War1R & War2R are quite alright. For a more faithful and immersive experience, both remasters are currently halted by inaccuracies, unfortunate differences (likely due to lack of time and resources, but who the hell knows) and lacking additions here and there. All of which would be more evident if you played those games before.
Apparently Blackhand does not want his daughter Griselda's DNA to be contaminated by Ogre DNA. Maybe that is a good thing, depends on how good or bad Ogre's DNA is.
1994. most likely 95. by the time the game arrived where I live. I was 12. In my mind, the game felt and looked like as the Remastered version today. I fell in love with the "Warcraft" universe ever since.

People might not even realize they've actually changed stuff for these remasters, bigger control groups, abilities give actual description what they do other than you figuring it out and while the game speed change was there, I don't know if it's faster now. The biggest thing in the first Warcraft is the addition of being able to move the map with mouse freely. Oh yeah, OG DOS version you had to select a uint, press M and then you could even scroll around. What it seems people miss as well is that you can get original War1 and War2 as well. They had those on GOG since like 2019, but brought them over to Battlenet back in like Janurary (also Diablo 1), most likely for this 30th anniversary. If you do buy the battle chest, you get those as well, so technically, five games. This actually makes it easy for comparisons, fire remaster and original, type in some cheats and see what's different.
You can RE-build a Town Hall, it's under advanced structures. It's also not perfectly symmetrical, Spearmen have more HP and less range. I should mention that Warcraft 3 is deliberately imperfectly symmetrical not A-symmetrical.
At 8:28 you clicked to build a barracks, but your peon had its pathing blocked by your questionable farm layout. Then, you assigned that peon to wood cutting.

Warcraft 2 was a pretty straight upgrade of Warcraft 1. These remasters are built on the same new engine (called simply warcraft-rts), so now they're even more similar. I personally think the new graphics are more generic and less charming than the original ones, but that's also nostalgia speaking. What I think is a real shame is that the engine is pretty barebones and doesn't have any support for animated briefings, victory/defeat screens, or the 3d map animation that the original had.
Yeah unfortunately some things get lost when migrating from DOS games. Blizz likely didn't want to invest TOO MUCH time/money into it to recreate those elements, but who knows maybe the rts team will patch it down the line.
@Ideataster Based on the credits, the RTS team appears to be three people. I kinda doubt we can expect too much from them except fixing the most obvious bugs.
