- In this video we continue our story with Anthony Villalon, a young man we met back in 2010 when he was a teenager in his first few years of prison after receiving a 60 year sentence at age 15. After serving over half his life behind bars, we visited Anthony again in 2023 to see how his life had gone since we last left him as a teen. In this video, our producer follows Anthony during a day on the job as a barber in the prison barbershop. The prison also housed death row, and was built when Abraham Lincoln was president. For viewers who missed our 2023 interview with Anthony in prison during that same visit, we have included it in this video. During the interview, he talks about his life as a young kid, the background of his crime, and how the past 15+ years inside prison walls has shaped the person he's become and what he hopes for his future.
At the end of the video, we then look back at clips from our 2010 interview with Anthony and his former cellmate, Colt, as they talked about the surreal nature of being young kids serving hard time. The end of the video also features a 2024 update on both young men.

His uncle that was murdered was murdered with my uncle, Jason Janek. And then guys responsible for killing them never were arrested or anything. They got away with it.

I never forgot about these kids. Thanks for the update. Im sorry teens should not be sentenced to life. Its sickening that politicians wont spend money to rehabilitate them. We know how to do it these days. People on power dont care about children before money in their pockets!!!

@WorldGoneMad1312 Sorry for your loss I've lost family and friends to violence too unfortunately. I know people who are coming out after years and some looking at years. Its not cool. Teenagers don't understand consequences they feel untouchable. The brain is not fully developed, especially in males, until 25 most recent studies show. This is because the brain's frontal lobe, especially the prefrontal cortex, isn't fully mature until around age 25. The development of the pre-frontal cortex of the frontal lobe allows us to process the pros and cons of a decision before it is made. Look into it more it's science. No bias. It's not beliefs or faith like religion it's proof. Prove God or gods exist ill wait all day long because you would be the 1 out of 8 billion plus people on earth to do that. That's money for you.

Hi Anthony, again I love your attitude and without a doubt you will be a great member of society!! Question....Has anyone thought about how the gun policies contribute to these children losing their youth in jail??? Breaks my heart! I am from Canada so used to no guns
@zoelefevre3974 - Thank you for watching and asking that question. Over the past 25 years of filming interviews with incarcerated youth, the one thing that kids tell us over and over again is how easy it is for them to get a gun. When we ask them WHY they want a gun when they're so young, many of them tell us it's a must in their neighborhood -- that everyone in the neighborhood knows if you *don't* have a gun, and that means being targeted for crime. It's a vicious cycle, sadly. Thank you again for watching and taking the time to comment.

im glad he is doing fine and he has good relationship with his fellow immates, i feel for the comments tho, let us focus on the reality that those are criminals and the good old kiddo is actually a murderer (directly or by asociation regardless a murderer) stop normalizing second chances to hienas like them. we should close the attitude gaps that allow criminal walk scott free after evil crimes just because a pathethic appeal to feelings and social perception...

This kid need a second chance in society what happened to him at age 14 is just the consequences of poverty some how people has to survive every day at age 14 he has no idea about the trial now now he is mature and he can tell his story and defense himself. @stst77 - crazy looking back at those first interviews with both of them. Colt was 15 at the time, Anthony 17 (soon to turn 18).
@@CalamariProductions that makes sense. There’s a huge difference between 15 and 18 year olds. Also Anthony did say as a 12 year old he was hanging out with 20 and 30 year olds so he probably was much more mature than others from 12.
My brother was shot to death and his friend was also shot. The guy got 18 years in prison. He was 17 or 18 when he did that crime. I hated that guy for years but now 11 years later, I don’t. He will get out and that is that. I believe something will give one day and Anthony will be free again. There are so many loop holes in the system for juveniles. Eventually he’ll get out if he stays in court.
@robm3016 - very, very sorry to hear about your brother. That's a heavy thing to carry as a family member and the pain never goes away. The strength you show by letting go of your hate is the most healing thing you can probably do for yourself. We've been with several victim's family members who have told us similar things -- that they carried around so much hate for so many years that it nearly destroyed them, and then they decided it was time to find another way to live and honor their loved one. It's an incredibly powerful thing to witness. But we get it. How do you not hate someone for taking so much away? That's a question and a process that only all of you who have been through such tragedies can truly understand. We've also talked to young kids like Anthony who were the perpetrators of the crime and they live in forever apology for what they did. They desperately want to show they can give back to society and try and make a difference, rather than having taxpayers pay for their decades of incarceration where no one really wins. As you say, they WILL get out some day (the vast majority of prisoners do). We need to think seriously about what is offered in prison to better a person before they return to society--especially when it involves young people--not solely about punishment just for punishment sake. We greatly appreciate you sharing your own story. Thank you for that.
When that guy said he got 80 years and had been in juvie before prison, i wasn’t surprised because when i first saw his eyes they looked hard, dead and mean.

Were there ever fights in the barber shop or was it truly a safe place? With those deadly scissors lying around I’d be nervous.
It seems like a really nice job and trade to learn in prison though.
It’s so cruel thinking about a kid having to deal with the fact that this now, is forever, I’m so proud of him for trying to stay positive when there isn’t much to be positive about 😢
@kasie680 - you bring up a good point -- the ability to stay positive when there seems to be nothing to be positive about. We're always interested to speak with young people like Anthony who receive extremely long sentences and find out how they remain positive behind bars. Some prisoners simply say, "I have a life sentence; why be good when I might not ever get out anyway?" But many others take the other path. From our experience filming inside these places over the past 25 years, a lot seems to be contingent upon who a young person decides to hang around once inside. If they seek out the fellow inmates who participate in programs, seek to educate themselves while inside, keep in touch with family members, etc., their chances of finding positivity definitely increases. It also helps if they are seeking sentence modifications from the courts. Behavior while behind bars *does* make a difference. Anthony has chosen to do everything he can to prove he's not the same 14-year old who committed a horrendous crime and caused so much pain. It's not easy in the place he's been, but we commend him for doing his best to atone for what he did. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.

Wow he barely was a teen, that is sad the kid didn’t get to grow up experience high school prom school sports field trip because of one action that he made to himself. Just goes to show the justice system don’t play.

Thanks for the update. Looking at the specifics I feel like Anthony has served his time. I wonder how the victim’s family views him at this point. He is leading a life of purpose while serving time. There is something to be said for that.
@elaineharwood3639 - thank you for watching Anthony's story. Yes, he is leading a life of purpose and doing everything he can behind bars to better himself and atone for what he did. That's not easy when you have a 60 year sentence as a young teen. As for the victim's family, we have heard from one member and they understandably are against him getting out early. There is so much pain all the way around with cases like this. Our goal with all of our videos is to hopefully help prevent others from going through what the family has gone through and likewise, what Anthony and his family have gone through. Its cruel and unusual punishment under the constitution to sentence a 14 teen year to a 60-year prison term. He deserves a modified sentence. The main problem with our laws is that it gives no hope. Yes, he did an unthinkable act, but he was 14 years old. What does he know at 14?

In many European countries those under the age of 14 are not criminally responsible and even those older than 14 and under 18 only get a slap on the wrist - juvenile prison at the worst

This is so sad to blame ONLY a child. What help does our society and govt give kids in bad areas? Barely ANYTHING.
I want a job as the prison guard in the barber shop, getting that bread and pension chillin.
Working in the prison is not all sunshine and rainbow’s! My sons in law both work in one in fl. They have very strict rules. They have been pepper sprayed , spit on, using bodily fluids thrown in their face. Feces smeared on beds and walls and even thrown at them. Don’t sit there and think it is a cool job. My father was a cop in the city for 30 years and couldn’t bring his work home. Same as my sons in law. They have to suck it up. Also the barber shop is one of the worst area to work in, because the guards have been stabbed with scissors, shaving equipment ect. One of them just changed his hours to night time. He doesn’t want to babysit a bunch of evil adults. He goes in they have rec time, eat , go to their cells. Not a fun job at all!
I hope they free him soon, but I wish he would have never gotten does prison tattoos.

Lawyers. Some are better than others
It depends on the state laws, judge, police report, lawyers, and criminal history of the defendant in some ways i think it would be more fair for a robot to determine the sentence because we see people getting no time to decades for the same crime. We see people doing no victim crimes getting decades more time than a murderer. There is no consistency or fairness in sentencing. At least a robot would give the same sentence for everyone.
He definitely got turned out😂 I remember that other kid was literally interviewed the day after getting his cheeks took and had a hopeless aura then it was reported it was the first time he got his wig snatched and extremely violently.. he shanked one of the men at some point
I watched this while incarcerated as a Juvenile.
No 1 wins here. The kids are lost almost at elementary age due to the system an NO ONE CARING TILL ITS 2 LATE.

It depends. Some prisoners seem to be preserved from the aging process and others age fast. I think it depends on how well a person handles the stress of prison.

I pray he does well but what do you think will happen in the after life when he meets his maker and I don't want to hear as long as he says I believe he is good. Reread the big book my Bible says everyone will be held to account and answer for what they have done.
