Fun story, my mom and dad’s first blind date was when LeClair scored 4 goals in a game against Vancouver. This was my moms first game as well, and he only thing she knew about hockey was John LeClair. She took it as a good sign, went on a second date, and in July of 2003 I was born as the first child. Edit: and November of 2003 I was in the nosebleeds of the Wachovia Spectrum for my first game.
That’s pretty cool, leclaire is from my hometown, (St. Albans, VT) and his highschool jersey is retired and hanging in our local rink (he wore #7 growing up). Between Leclaire and our current highschool coach Toby Ducolon, (who also had a cup of coffee in the NHL and was selected one spot ahead of Patrick Roy in the draft) a huge hockey culture was created in this part of Vermont.
As a Devils fan, it was incredibly frustrating dealing with LeClair in Philly because he had a knack for getting clutch goals and always had the defense focused on his line which made things tense when he had the puck. As much as I couldn't stand him as a rival, I always respected him as a player. I think he should definitely be in the Hall Of Fame.
John LeClair is without a doubt a Top 10 Flyer ever. He might have gotten overshadowed by Lindros, but he is still an enormous legend in Flyers history.
I was 12 years old when he brought the cup home to Saint Albans, Vermont. It's the only time I've ever seen the Stanley Cup in person. Leclair was a fantastic player, and one of my favorite of all time. Also, he was from the next town over from where I grew up. I might be biased.
You forgot to mention that he was the first American-born and -trained player to record three back-to-back 50-goal seasons. Before him, Keith Tkachuk and Jeremy Roenick were pretty close, but ultimately did not make it.

No other US-born player has ever even come close to that stat. I would put LaFontaine, Modano and Mullen ahead of those other players you mentioned.
I honestly don't know if LeClair will ever be inducted into the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame, but he at least was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009.
I followed Leclair and his career. At his best he was an elite NHL player. His diminishing returns happened quickly as I recall, but he had his time and us fans 40 and up remember him well.
Shannon you missed a great opportunity to bring up Detroit’s Grind Line. The Legion of Doom would normally just bully most teams top players into submission. If I remember correctly Philly was actually favored in that series. They thought they would push around Yzerman and Fedorov. But Scotty Bowman being the genius he is set out some of his fastest and toughest skaters against them. The Grind Line never put up a lot of points, but they drew penalties and prevented opposing teams top lines from scoring.
@@11DNA11 Well no kidding 2 HALL OF FAME defenseman made a difference. 😂 But to dismiss the Grind Line is asinine, Bowman opened up the series with Grind Line in and Maltby from Draper scored the first goal of the series on a penalty kill!
My first hockey game was Canucks vs Flyers on NYE 97 I believe. Was an 8-0 pounding at the hands of the LOD. Was a good sign of what was to come being a young canucks fan at the time.
The reason why I became Flyers fan is because of LeClair. I was about 10 yrs old and he lived about 20 mins away from where I grew up in nearby St.Albans VT. This guy along with Lindros, Renberg, Desjardins, Brind'Amour and Hextall brought so much consistent talent to the Flyers organization it was a shame they never won a cup during the late 90's-early 2000's. Thank you Hockey guy and great show on LeClair.
Thank you for this video. Those mid 90s Flyers teams are what made me fall in love with hockey. I can see the argument with him getting in. I say put him in. If Bill Barber is in,then LeClair should be in. Plus it is a crime that Brian Propp is not in. Doesn't he have over 1,000 points?
Couple things. #1, LeClair is the last consistent scorer the Flyers ever had. #2, the 1999-2000 playoff loss was worse to me than the 1997 finals collapse. That year the Flyers, without Lindros I might add beating Buffalo in 5, Pittsburgh in 6(including the 5 overtime win in game 4) then had a 3-1 lead on NJ only to forget how to score goals. Game 7 ended up being Lindros' last as a Flyer as he sat out the entire next season then was traded to the Rangers. Had they beaten the Devils that year I think they make short work of the Stars and due to that Lindros might have wanted to stay. But ever since LeClair left the Flyers have lacked a scoring punch. Haven't had a consistent 30 goal scorer since.
When I discovered the NHL he was my favourite player. That Legion of Doom line was scary. I just knew you were going to make a video on this man eventually. Thank you.
John LeClair was my favorite player and even I question is HOF credentials. Either way, I became a hockey fan largely because of the Habs' '93 Cup run, including his 2 consecutive OT winners in the Final. Not to mention his screen on Desjardins game tying PP goal with Roy pulled in game 2 to enable Eric's eventual hat trick in OT. When LeClair and Desjardins were traded to the Flyers, I pretty much was too.
