I've driven this hundreds of times, thinking how cool it would be to own one of these houses on the beach. For people that don't know, these are 20 million dollar homes, many of them. And now they, along with the land the sat on, hold virtually no value whatsoever. Be grateful for the life you have. The rest is just "stuff."

I live in a western suburb of Denver, Colorado. The Marshall Fire happened three years ago (New Years Eve Day to be exact) in a suburb north of where I live. In less than 24 hours, 1,000 homes were burned. There were hurricane force winds here that day that helped spread the fire quickly. I recall the horror and sadness watching home after home; neighborhood after neighborhood burn. This goes far beyond that devastation. It is unimaginable. I am so thankful for the snippets of stories hearing of people helping people and animals.

It should be public access, for certain, but with these homes, it is the LAND where all the value is.
The land, alone, is where the millions and millions of dollars of property taxes are levied (from the city's perspective). From the owner's perspective, the $30M+ of their home's value came from that land (how will they be compensated?). Insurance companies have an entirely different interest (paying out the least they can, and...in their psychopathic ruthless greed...prefering to NOT pay at all.

@charleswhitford2026: "a simple sump pump and garden hose would have done a lot of help......" You're absolutely spot on pal. I looked at the situation & the first thing I asked was, "why and as a community, aren't ALL the people that own these beach side properties, stood outside their properties (24/7 if needs be), with hose pipes, dampening/flooding the road & pavement, outside of their homes.
These people have ALL got money. If they didn't have hose pipes, rush out & get one, ladders to, to protect their properties from the embers, flying around in the air, landing of roofs (ladders t help dampen the roofs) & travelling towards their properties across the road & pavement. Taking things to the extreme, they didn't even have to hold the hose pipe. They just needed to leave them running, directly outside their homes, to flood the road/pavement to neutralize the embers. If they had worked together & done just that, they would have helped themselves massively.
A very poor reflection of community spirit, common sense, & camaraderie shown and in front of the world's media, from this section of society, within L.A. To the extent, that (sometimes) I find it hard to feel sorry for those that no longer have these beach side properties because it really have to be like this, OR, end like this to them....🇬🇧

( A nice cove ) They are very serious about it. They give homeowners a key that CANNOT be copied. (So that the homeowners can't give one to friends and then friends of friends) My sister owned a home at the entrance street to Point Dume. She took me down there once and it was bizarre. I lived in W.L.A. I asked her, "How can they do this-you can't own the beach." She just shrugged her shoulders. My sister moved after a year.

You never saw a fire up close? Those bright red things flying off are embers and they're hot as fk. When they land on a green tree or grass, they lack the energy to dry them out and start a fire. When they land on a house, it's already dried out and easily catches fire. Doesn't take much blown embers to catch a house on fire, and once it is, it's sending out more embers to the neighboring houses. If they land on one with a concrete roof or walls, they don't catch fire. If they land on asphalt, that catches fire real fast.

While nothing is foolproof, smart forest management would have significantly reduced the damage. It's not like this is not predictable. Someone just blew it and keeps blowing it. This is unnecessary suffering. Why hasn't Newsome and the mayor resigned?
Good forest management would have cost much less than the re-building and suffering of all this damage. Maybe some of that $24 Billion California has spent on their homeless problem, which seems to be worse than ever, should have been spent to benefit all the homeowner and business owners. $24 Billion seems like a very generous amount. A lot of the problem was this house were built to close together. Some of this house did not even have 4 inches between each other. Alot were add on upon add on. As the rent and mortgages get higher more people start to build more around the houses to bring in more tenants. Make up that difference in the rent increases. As populations increase and gets dense. Housing goes up in two to 6 story buildings. Most people around neighborhoods will notice that a lot of single-family homes in time become bigger and bigger. Then a lot are renting garages and some build little buildings and rent them out. Most are out of code. It will be very costly to build because of inflation. Building materials are very costly. You don't see this problem in Mexico and South America. Most of those houses are built out of cinders blocks and concrete. A lot of the concrete commercial building were hurt. If you are going to build in fire prone areas, you might think brick or cinder block or concrete walls. Bricks are cheaper it's just more labor intensive. But as you can see the only thing standing is the brick chimineas.
