It's open source, with thousands of contributors worldwide, among which are all the major manufacturers (including significant contributions from Huawei). Google provides it's own services and apps on top of Android, including the Play Store, and that is what was affected by the block, not Android.

  • @deathdoor

EDIT2 11:00s "EMUI" is just the interface layer above the operating system, in this case Android. EMUI works fine in their own operating system, and for what they talk, most of Android made applications were work in their Harmony OS but to avoid further problems now they just need to be recompiled.
And don't confuse brand (a famous app) with function (what the app does)
    ---
EDIT1: btw, if you don't know there's a quirk on Huawei's software. If you shoot on "Pro Mode" (all settings can be at auto, don't matter) with JPG+RAW enabled, the processing applied to the JPG is different, with less heavy handed processing, resulting in a more natural output. It's a shortcut for those who don't want to edit the RAW for better results.

Cameras are amazing and everything else works perfectly well!
I have one thing to say, from my experience, this phone is tough!
I dropped it few times and once it fell on the screen and it did not shatter. It fell from the pocket height so that might be luck.
but other day I accidentally dropped it in bathroom it fell on tiles and AGAIN it landed right on the screen!!! It sounded really bad but again, it didn't shatter! So, this phone seems to have very tough glass. A big plus!

    Great review Ted!
Personally, I think that if one is worried about security concern, he should be as worried when using Google Android than others who have their own built their own OS over it or even
    a totally new Android OS.
To most users the real questions will be the App store. Sure enough business is business and I can’t really see any issue why a company, even those in the US, would exclusively offer his Android software via the Google Play Store. “If they build it, they will come”. It will be call the “Huawei Store”. One question though: "Will it be as secured as the Google Store?" While Google as a good reputation for filtering malicious Android Apps there’s no real proof as to how all Google Apps are malicious or not…
Oddly enough the most secured Apps we used nowadays are Open Source. I just wish there was Open Source hardware and an Open Source Android Shell in phones and
    tablets.
Thanks for reviewing the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro. I owned a Huawei BTV tablet and I found that there were some glitches when Bluetooth. Hope this isn’t the case here.

Hi Ted! I recommend you do a further research about the issue between Google and Huawei regarding the use of Android. Certain phones (like the recent Mate 30 Pro) doesn't have the "approval", whereas other models like the P30 duo, due to their date of launch, are OK to have the license to use the Google Play Services. That's why they are actually spreading the Android 10 update with EMUI 10. I haven't had any software issue with my P30, I've been using and updating all sort of apps, while with the Mate 30 duo you won't find the play store and any kind of Google service (you have to sideload them, but it has errors). I own this phone and I really think the camera is the worst I’ve ever had. Any time there is a slightly high dynamic range the photos look like an overcooked HDR. Skin tones always seem to look like I’ve pushed a clarity slider to the max. I don’t know how the software works but it felt like they were trying to get too much info from the image, as if it opened all the shadows and closed down all of the highlights, the pictures all lacked contrast. But when the scene all fell into a small dynamic range the photos were actually quite good. But still not a patch on the iPhone and nowhere near the old lumia 1020.

The Pixel 3a DNG quality is so good in comparison, that I confused them with pictures from my Canon G1X Mk III in Lightroom - easy to post-process too. I was really disappointed by the P30 Pro since it is a good phone but the camera department is a real bummer.

I have had the P30 pro only for a short time , i`m still trying to decide whether to put the sim back in my galaxy note 9 and use the P30 pro as a paper weight or stick it out and keep using it and hope it grows on me , i`m sure if you are a keen long time iphone user you may appreciate the similarity between emui and ios .
As a long time android boy , i have to say , i think it is ....... Insert swear word here ... awful , but that is just me .
Even the phone general layout and operation feels a bit clunky and awkward compared to my note 9 .
i bought the P30 on its camera reputation being a hobby snapper ,
So far i have been a bit underwhelmed by the camera in some circumstances and utterly blown away in others .
Given the general feel of the phone ( i just do not like it ) and the opportunity to have that cash in my pocket again , i`d probably look elsewhere regardless of some of the camera good points .

The new Xiaomi Mi Note 10 has a 108mp camera. Check THAT out.

    • @mjaimk
      @mjaimk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

108mps doesn't make it a better camera phone. There's more to it. For a processor to write a 108mp it needs to be fast, and Note10 doesn't have a flagship processor, it takes time to process the image and write it to the storage. Not to mention all the software processing that goes into smartphone photography which MI doesn't do all that well. Sure it would have a lot more pixels due to the bumped up res but the quality still isn't good. Look at some reviews online. The sharpness isn't all that good anywhere that's not the center. Its like Marques said, maybe next year when big companies like Samsung get the 108mp sensor they could use it in conjunction with their software processing and resources to really use it to its true potential

@@mjaimk My point wasn't how much better it is. I've seen several reviews for it and know how it fares. I just brought it up because of how extreme it has gotten. K?

I’m glad you mentioned Huawei’s controversies at the start of the video. Most other tech reviews simply choose to omit that stuff. As a Canadian, those controversies go even further and have affected some of us directly through escalated trade problems and blocking our crop exports. It’s a complicated situation but I can say I don’t plan to support Huawei.

Great video Ted, I really enjoyed your "Smartphone Cameras Explained" video back in August, it has been an easy share when the subject comes up in online conversations about phones vs. Cameras I thought about getting one of these huawei phones specifically and only as a capture device for online content, I know the P20 Pro does take incredible images also. There is a member of a Facebook Group, I Love Toronto, who posts P20 images from time to time and even when compressed by Facebook's converter there is something about the clarity and detail of the images that stands out immediately and becomes more noticeable the longer you look. I'm curious what your thoughts, if any are with the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 pro
