Rabbits actually can have their fur ripped off them, it’s called degloving; it’s kind of a defense mechanism when they’re being attacked by predators. Working in a wildlife clinic, I’ve seen plenty rabbits come in with half their fur/skin falling off from dog/cat attacks so the beginning of this story was pretty horrifying for me lol
@@thereptile4139 yes. Some years back, my dogs got ahold of a rabbit that got in their yard. I got to it before they killed it but my dog had already tore a strip of fur from its back. I saw the same rabbit the next year and its fur had brown back other than a small arrow shape near the shoulders.
A version of the rabbit story that I'd read said that the rabbit was actually the princess's pet. The princess felt gratitude to Okuninushi for helping her rabbit, so she married him.

Our two beautiful provinces were Dewa and Mutsu. Just out of curiosity, are there stories in Japanese mythology where wifes didn't tolerate the whole harem/cheating thing and had their revenge?
Not in ‘ancient’ Japanese mythology outta the pre-Sengoku period, or at least not to my knowledge. But the Edo period was fond of ghost stories of women scorned coming back to deal with their unfaithful husbands in very gory fashion :P
I remember reading that story in a book about myths of different nations. Though they cut out the most interesting parts about him dying 2 times and going to underworld.

And then the white rabbit of Inaba (Also known as Tewi) lived for a few more thousand years and became an immortal yokai and moved to Gensokyo. The end. She also just has like really good luck and kind of gave some to Okuninushi. It clearly worked.
My personal interpretation of the final part of the Ōkuninushi myth (not in this video, so sorry if it's off topic), is that it mythologizes and "legitimatizes" either the union or conquest of the Yamato State over Izumo no Kuni, its closest and most powerful rival before eastward and northward expansion began in earnest. The success of this unification immortalized in the early legitimatizing texts of the Yamato Court gave them a divine rationale for bringing all the Yayoi kingdoms (and Emishi, in a broader sense) under their central control. This culminated in the story of Yamato Takeru (or as I like to call him, Captain Japan).
