The ice and salt mixture lowers the melting temperature of the ice and gets it really cold. Rock salt is used to melt ice on roads since mixing the two lowers the freezing temperature of water. It's a fun science experiment for kids. Just watch out for frostbite. It is a cool experiment that shows mixing things can lower their freezing temperature and boiling temperature.

I was like "oh dude! my aunt had a blitzhacker back in the late 80's/early 90's!" while realising that that is about 30 to 40 years ago right now... damn i feel old.

The first item, the chopper, my Mom had one of those back in the very early 60's, so it was being manufactured for a long time. My sister still uses it.

Hey, I used to have a Blitzhacker! That thing worked great! I had it for almost 30 years before it finally broke.

My mother had a Blitzhacker! She liked to use it for any chopping task other than a small one.

I had the E-Z Tracer. It was a bit tricky to use, but as you saw in your video, it did work after a fashion.

I still have several devices from the late sixties/early seventies and they still work better today than most of the current devices. I have a plastic moulie that I use several times a week and no mandolin beats rons slice a matic that allows adjustment along with a waffle blade for french fries. Mine are both like new even after fifty plus years of use. Bought an extra slice a matic off e-bay that's still new in the box. The moulie makes shredded potatoes for hash browns in a few seconds and piles of shredded carrots to go in salads or shredded cheese for tacos.
