Thank you so much for this very informative video. Being in Florida myself I really enjoy watching your videos as I can easily and effectively use all the information you share.
Very informative video. Growing onions from seed is a little tricky. They have to be very fresh seeds. They like cool weather to sprout like in the 70s. I start them inside my house in August and move them outside as soon as they sprout. Then I transplant them to my garden in October or November. My favorite varieties are Red Creole and White Creole from Baker Creek.
Took me a season to get the hang of it now I am obsessed because the flavor is just so much more strong. I now have an updated onion grow guide as this one is one of my older videos. Check it out here: th-cam.com/video/g35dF8aVDhw/w-d-xo.html
Ugh it’s January 22 and my starts are going in this weekend (new garden beds completed) devastated when you said don’t start end of January lol😢 guess we will see what happens.. Florida 10a
Just found & subscribed to your channel. I have a question about fertilization. We start off with blood meal, but for how long & often do we fertilize? Second question: when do we switch from blood meal to bone meal? This would be my first time planting onions & want so badly to get this right. Zone 5b IL. Thanks
I fertilize mine every 7 to 14 days with the blood meal and once I see the plant start to bulb at all I stop fertilizing or switch to bone meal. I hope this helps!
When it comes to onions, I only use high nitrogen fertilizers. Bone meal is best for root crops (under the ground). The more leaves an onion plant has, the bigger the bulb so that is why I focus on nitrogen. Blood meal is good, but its not as concentrated in nitrogen like synthetic stuff. Which just means you will have to fertilize more often with it. It also takes a while to break down and release all of its nutrients. I would say apply some every 2 weeks and scratch it into the soil. Maybe add a splash of fish emulsion too. This makes sense. I got a packet of seed from local big box stores, so who knows how long they were sitting there. I'm going to definitely try again.
I’ve never had luck growing onions yet, but I’m not deterred. I will succeed next year it’s gonna happen.

I said I planned on transplanting them last weekend but it was too cold so I will be transplanting this weekend. Should be fine 😀

@@JerrasGarden Thank you so much for replying. I think I understand now!
All my research says in zone 8a to direct sow the seeds in October. I’m so confused.
If you dont get snow or hard freezes, that could work
Do you grow garlic?
Yes I'm going to be planting it very soon and will be making a tutorial so stay tuned
@@JerrasGarden Awesome! Looking forward to it.
