They did technically have a peaceful period between 1945 & 1991. Or at least Yugoslavia did but when most people say Balkans they really just mean (former) Yugoslavia.
To be honest, the world seems to be resetting to its default settings… the relative peace that Europe experienced since 1945 is an outlier in history that we grew used to as its “normal” state. If you don’t consider the Caucasus part of Europe, the continent had no conflicts in the last 20 years, until the Ukraine invasion. The last time Europe had a few decades of peace, it was just before WWI…
I spent some time in Kosovo in 2002 as part of the peacekeeping operation. You could sense just how much these two peoples hated each other just by how they looked at each other
This is true. Even my liberal and pro-Western parents who participated in the Yugoslav wars yet consider them to be "unnecessary brother wars", and actually love other Yugoslav peoples, they actually hate Albanians.
I spent a summer with a group of Croats (almost all of their fathers fought in the 90s war). They also agreed that the 90s wars could have been avoided and were useless. And yes, they also hate Albanians for some reason lol
@@aleksandarmicke1996 Croats definitely do no hate Albanians ... don't know where you got that from. Actually they are one of the few other peoples in Balkans we have good relations with !

Every time Simon makes a video predicting potential flash points, it ends up happening soon after. I know you're not a wizard, but damn yall do good at your jobs in analysis and fact gathering, with a great foundation of the history that leads to conflicts.
Thank you for calling our lakeside town Ohrid "dreamy" ❤. Great video, this situation is a worrying factor for our region, so a non-biased analysis is really imoortant and welcome.
Author Ambrose Bierce wrote: "War loves to come like a thief in the night, and the profession of international amity provides the night." This was written 10 or so years before the outbreak of World War I.
Im from Serbia. Im 22 years old. I must say that war is the last thing we want. People here just want to live their lives in peace. I imagine Albanian people think alike. All of this is unnecessary and we really dont like this life of constant uncertainty with everlasting possibility of being forcefully drafted to fight in another ponitless, bloodshedding war. All because a few politicians arent willing to sit down with the other side and negotiate like adults. They are afraid to lose a few political points, we are afraid to lose our lives. We really feel like there is absolutely no future for us. Its devastating
The thing is this situation is beyond any form of negotiations. There is no way for both parties to be happy with the agreememt. Why? Because Kosovo government want the entire Kosovo province (because North is rich in resources). Serbia on the other hand doesn't want to let go of it's territory especially because of history that is being destroyed by Albanians. The only solution is war sadly. Trying to incorporate Albanians into Serbia would lead to another North Macedonia so not even that is an option.
@@aleksandarmicke1996 Won't the world become simpler, cleaner, kinder if Albanians suddenly decide to teleport to Italy, the USA, Germany, Turkey, Antarctica? what does Comrade Iskander think about this:?
@@AquariumRussFunny enough, I was just thinking that the world would be simpler if the Serbians teleported instead. I hope you understand my sarcasm here and re think what you just said. I am an Albanian that live on Kosova. Peace is what we need, not war! Both of our people deserve the chance to live dignified lives and put an end to our hatred towards one another. Did not enough of our people die?
I was in both Kosovo and Serbia less than 2 weeks ago (Kosovo) and Serbia until last saturday the 15th of October 2023. The serbs I met in Kosovska Mitrovica told me the same, asked at "Luna Bar" in Kosovska Mitrovica, while sipping a beer. Nobody wants another war, if the situation might be political of course, they would rather foresee a peaceful 2 states solutions which will see the North probably be back to Serbia and Kosovo to deal with Albania for a reunification. Of course, there are extreme sides, like the ones who want to avenge what happened, or the ones who did that Mural paintings with Serbia shaking hands with Russia and seeing Serbia taking back Kosovo and Russia doing the same with Crimea (laughable) To my extent also it's extremely weird to witness that Kosovo looks to me nothing but just another Albanian Province. More Albanian flags than Kosovo, the ratio is 70% to 30% in Prizren, albanian Mitrovica, Skenderaj Though well. I am positively speaking here. Initiatives like Free Roaming for Balkans can incentivize projects together, and political solutions and political courage. Rather than always bringing people to think about War and Genocides.
2023 seems to be the year of flashpoints. I find it so sad that people would rather emphasize their ethnic origins to excuse acts of hatred than to just embrace their neighbors 😢
The 2020s decade in general is probably gonna be defined by general insanity. Unfortunately, one thing that's constant throughout humanity's history is War. Things were (relatively) peaceful before, but it should be noted that it was not just an anomaly, but the only time this has really occurred throughout history
It’s just the mass media, there were plenty of coups and proxy wars going on during the Cold War. We live in the most peaceful time in human history. So, that probably means that we are prone to violence.
We lived with Albanians for centuries. There were almost no problems. However, when your neighbors steal your home and call it theirs, would you still be inclined to 'embrace your neighbors' ? Yeah, I didn't think so. It's better for you not to talk.
My question is if your neighbours came and stole your home you'd think the same? Would you want to live with them? I can understand why Serbs feel that way. Kosovo is a holy area for them inhabited by them for almoy1000 years. Then some big country comes tells you they're giving your land to someone else to accomodate their geopolitical interest. You can't possibly tell me this is alright.
Simon, i have been watching your videos for about 10 years. But this video was different. To me, I heard your passion for the subject matter and about the people involved. I felt like you really deeply cared. I appreciate your and your writers hard and consistent work on all your channels. Great video!
The passion you speak of I feel (imho) is based on the man’s understanding of history and how this region in particular has a history of spillover. He also just made some videos based on another conflict that just started that I don’t think I need to name that is likely to spill over as well. Then there’s the ongoing Ukrainian war. It doesn’t take someone as smart as Simon is to understand, and see the elephant in the room. He’s concerned. We all should be a little concerned. Peace is a very tough prospect in many places right now and there are becoming far too many precursors to something we all will have to be involved in. I hope for peace for my child on this planet. I hope for peace for your children and frankly everyone else’s too. Kindness and tolerance has just been tossed aside so often for many years consecutively that compassion for others almost appears to be a pipe 💭 dream. Be nice to people around you no matter their colour creed or religion. Hope for peace ☮️ and safety to all children. But, also maybe start filling a cupboard with some supplies. Cause hope is great for regular people but it’s not us that actually starts these wars. Thanks from canada
There are a DOZENS of things this ultra-biased video does not mention. Albanians shot-up Serbian kids this very Christmas, every single week Albanian special forces raid Serbian homes arresting people on bogus charges, terrorizing the population, the "KLA" was officially designated by the US as a terrorist organization, etc, etc, etc. Most western reports are heavily biased, like never mentioning that as of 2023 MORE than half UN countries do NOT recognize Kosovo, but this video was astounding hardcore anti-Serbian.. So no, this is nowhere near a great video..
Signed a treaty to change the world Tensions fall and a peace unfurled Nothing like what had come before It's the deal, it's the treaty that will end the war From a shot that would change the world Tensions rise and a war is unfurled Nothing like what had come before It's the war that will end all war Will this war really end all wars? Can a war really end all war? Will this war bring another war? It's the war that will end all wars
I don't believe we will have another world war. By that, I mean we won't have a singular was between 2 sides made up of multiple nations in direct conflict. I think we have entered the age of a hundred proxy wars. We are going to see more individual wars between smaller states while the larger ones fund the ones they want to win.
Simon i have been a big fan of your channels for a long time, but this takes it to a whole new level. I have never seen such a good analysis of what we are living right now in Serbia. I would like to add even more context for anyone interested: 1. How Vucic came to power: He was the right hand of the former president Tomislav Nikolic, who won his seat mostly due to the dissapointment of the previous govt. He was first deputy PM, then PM and then president. His rise from someone who was just around to PM was incredibly fast. He is constantly in a coalition with SPS, the remnants of the Milosevic party, which gives him an extra 6-10% in each election 2. Vucic has almost complete control over the media in Serbia. He controls all the big TV channels, all the big newspapers and has armies of internet bots and trolls made to show false support for him or muddy the online discourse. For a lot of Serbian population that do not have acces to alternative sources of information what these media publish is the only truth they know 3. The buildup and teardown of forces on the border every few montgs was initiated by attacks on Serbian civilians in Kosovo. Reprisal attacks culmimated with the pogrom of 2004, but continue sporadically to this day. Of course Vucic needs to show off how serious and strong he is so the army gets a short trip to the border and back. 4. Due to Kurtis refusal to implement the associaton of Serbian municipalities the discourse in Europe has been shifted slightly into Serbias favor, only to be thrown right back after the shootout 5. Last elections Vucics party very nearly lost Belgrade. wish us luck this december
Не могу страни медији да издрже а да не наместе причу тако да испаднемо гори од Хитлера. Good luck! Hopefully normal people come out to vote in sufficient numbers. As for the war, I don't think you need to worry. After everything that's been going on, I don't see the slightest chance of another war in Europe being tolerated and I think your PM knows it. He knows another war would be the end of him and his regime, he won't dare do anything.
@@alexlarsen6413 your answer is on point, but just as well it tells you that Kurti could take that as a way to provoke more provoked/staged conflicts to push his agenda as the EU is actively looking for sanctions on Serbia as Kurti is calling on sanctions for months now if not longer and if you think am pulling stuff out of my ass look up on a quick google search 'Kumanovo terrorist attack'. @@alexlarsen6413even if "normal people" come out and vote it wont mean anything as Vucic just sets up the election in his own favour. Add some dead people, change some election bags to fit what he needs ... He will stop at nothing to stay in power.
I am usually a fan if your work, but this fell short. You started from the premise that Serbia was inflaming tensions. However, it gave no real context to the situation. Kosovo has consistently refused to implement the agreement establishing a degree of Serbian autonomy. This is why the EU and US has taken such a tough line on Pristina. Moreover, there is growing concern that Kurti is preparing to try to retake control of the north by force. In this context, observers on the ground argue that this is why the Serbs in the north have been arming and have more local responsibility than many outside observers recognise. It also explains Serbia’s recent moves to send its troops close to Kosovo. It is trying force NATO’s hand to stop Kurti. Also, I dispute the idea that Serbia has anything to gain from a conflict. It would kill off its EU membership hopes. While support for membership may have fallen, Vucic knows that it is still the best and only chance for long term prosperity. He will not jeopardise this. But he also knows that he can’t let Kosovo overrun the north. This is certainly not to say that the Kosovo Serbs are without blame for rising tensions, or that Belgrade has its responsibility for the situation. But you start on the basis that the current tensions are essentially Serbia’s fault. It is far more complex than this. And it is important to note that this has been explicitly recognised by Washington and EU capitals. There is a much more nuanced and balanced story that needs to be told here.
Good point. Also, the Serbian government asked for more presence of KFOR in northern Kosovo. This shows that Serbia wants peace after all. Simon said that KLA's atrocities were a no match for Milosevic's atrocities which is absolutely not true. KLA was a classic terrorist organization that killed not only Serbs but also Albanians who were somehow connected with the Serbian government, such as postmen or technicians who worked for the state-owned company, etc. They were cutting heads often, which Serbian police never did. The statement about Milosevic's plan to ethnically cleanse Kosovo is also not true. The false operation "Horseshoe" was never planned in the first place. Indictments for that imaginary operation were forgotten in the Hague immediately after the bombing. Current Serbian government is probably one of the most compliant to the West's requests.
Also, quoting Rada Trajkovic and Jasmin Mujanovic is pathetic. Simon probably doesn't do in-depth research, but rather reads articles from sources such as N1, Danas, Nova S, etc.
Excellent analysis from JamesKerLindsay. The similarity between Gaza and North Kosovo. It will not matter that there are few Serbs in Kurti's government(similar to few Palestinians in Israel). With economic blockade and bad treatement of Serb in the North they will be radicalised special due to Kosovo special forces and police as there are no Serbs in these institutions same as the Mairs who are undemocraticly imposed by Kurti. More and more you are forcing a radicalisation of the Serb in the North and creating tensions instead improving relations and fighting the mafia.
I was about to voice my discontent with the biased and quite inaccurate narrative. But then I saw your comment, and I think there's nothing that I could say better. It's so tiring to see how time and again a lot of the western media, experts and "experts" are doing a lazy and destructive job of sticking to the (wrong, but that's a whole other story) 90s narrative of Serbs equals bad, and are poisoning the minds of people that we are striving so much to be a part of. Thank you, Mr. Ker-Lindsay. I hope it won't fall on deaf ears.
A degree of serbian autonomy ? What are you smoking i need some of that , they want full control of that area , they don’t accept kosova as a sovereign state and want full power in the area , this is another republika serpska like bosna , a failed country , we will never allow that in kosova , primeminister kurti signed the agreement to give serbs a degree of autonomy wich would not conclude executive powers , vucic didnt sign it , kurti signed it it was agreed both sides verbally only kurti signed it , you need to know more before you spit garbage

It honestly feels like the world is in a giant pressure cooker, with the nob being turned up every couple of months. It seems like the world is repeating the start of WWI all over again. Peace between the great powers being threatened by a series of international crises which causes them to form alliances, all the while smaller, but bloody, regional wars break out across the globe.
This is a fantastic explanation of the modern dynamic between Belgrade and Pristina. I'm moving to Belgrade in a few months, and this may be the best video I've seen on the topic, after watching dozens of similar videos. 10/10 🎉
My wife is a Serb. Her whole family is in Belgrade. I hope and pray the Albanians don’t do something so huge and horrible that Serbia will need go in to protect Serbs. That’s the only way a war will happen. And it’s quite possible as Albanians have been breaking all the agreements. Or many of them.
When I was in Kosovo we were doing missions along the border. We came across two homes out in the middle of freaking NOWHERE. One Serb family, one Albanian. They had been living in peace for generations. I always wonder how they are doing now.
For people that are interested in both stories, I suggest the documentary "The Weight Of Chains". As for Balkan, we will never learn. Just remember one thing people, while we fought each other, I didn't saw any politician MIA, or, that he was living a bad life today. And this will keep going until we are either united or divided and conquered, simple as that.
11:33 Note: Albin Kurti is more attached to the student protests in Prishtina (as their main organizer) than with the KLA. The student protests were a series of peaceful, nonviolent demonstrations in Prishtina that started out simple, like demanding better food in the cafeteria, but slowly shifted into demanding that lessons be taught in Albanian, to re-opening colleges and later on they pushed for full autonomy from Yugoslavia. The student movement and its affiliates would later on become Albin Kurti's Party, Vetevendosje.
World wars aren't one conflict. World war III is here, my friends. Be well, stay safe, and do everything in your power to stand for peace. You are loved. You matter. Be kind to one another. I, for one, care about you. Even though we've never met. You matter to me.
For those keeping score at home we at least 2 maybe 3? Currently active flashpoint for World War III one in Ukraine, and one in Israel/gaza. That leaves The caucuses: (still simmering and still facing a possible war again) China Taiwan North Korea South Korea And off course the Balkans in Europe. What’s one more active flashpoint surely one more war can’t hurt.
The more conflicts that pop up, the more likely that even more will come about. The world community can only focus its attention on so many flashpoints at once.

I mean my father served the army in pristina in his time, his brother too as an airfoce mechanic, later in the 80s obe cousin that was a young educated police officer with a career ahead had to go to kosovo to help serbian repression there, which was against the constitution of yugoslavia for police force of one republic to be deployed in another one, but yeah we could argue who broke the law more if you want, i have good memory, a lot of first hand witnesses from various times, i have a decent insight into kosovo for every decade in the last 50 years.

As a Serb living in Vojvodina, Serbia has gotten downhill since the SNS took power in 2012 aswell the fact we are suffering from poverty, corruption, unstable politics and inflation. Around from 2010, most of intelligent serbian students had fled the country to other areas for a better life, even families chose to migrate away because they dont want to live in the garbage hole far too long. Since when Vučić took power, Serbia went from being the 6th to the 4th poorest country in Europe aswell surpassing corruption index of 101/180. This was of course the result of propaganda, some of the warcriminals being assigned as ministries in the parliament and living inside of what's known to be the Zimbabwe of Europe. I feel genuinely worried that if a war broke out yet again in balkans between Kosovo and my homeland, it will seriously damage Serbia because despite the economy and Vucic's regime, there's still problems with rising prices aswell with immigration of serbs to another country. To give a honest opinion: Stop trusting dictators and their propaganda because one if not all will escalate into Ultranationalism and bloodshed. That's the usage of that.
Same problem here in Albania, too many are living for a better life. It’s at a point where there is more Albanian outside of Albania than inside. This is only because of the corrupt prime ministers that put the states money into their own pockets . Although Hungarians and Serbs are not really meant to be friends there are striking similarities in what's happened to the respective countries in the last 100 years or so. Appreciate the effort to explain things to your followers. 🙏🏻 The problem is using half-information or to be more precise one-sided narrative as fact and then form layers of conclusions and explanations on wrong premises. So is it not knowing better or you just try fit the narrative of your target audience. 🤷🏻♂️ To give you couple examples. You start with latest clashes in Banjska, while skipping numerous ethnically motivated shootings against Serbs, even on kids, arbitrary arrests, raids on Serbian ambulances and pharmacies and so on. If I was a parent of a shot kid I would probably either arm myself or flee 🇽🇰. You say 🇽🇰 police was ambushed when actually the policeman was killed by a booby trap inside placed on a vehicle that was blocking the road. That is tragic for the family of a policemen. But you don’t mention that the special police of so called Kosovo can be totally legally treated as paramilitary organization as by UN resolution that is obligatory the only armed force in Kosovo is KFOR (NATO under UN mandate). Further on you speak about million Albanians displaced by Serbia during NATO aggression while both the number and reasons for leaving Serbia can be questioned (having NATO bombs falling on their heads). Then you lower the number of Serbs that flee after NATO entered to guarantee safety. Then searching roots of conflict in 1981. while the roots go way behind to the period of Ottoman rule over the territory when Muslims (read Albanians) have been favored over Christians and terror over Serbs was tolerated while still the Serbs were majority by numerous Ottoman censuses. Then under “outside interference” you cover the potential influence of Russia but NATO’s military presence, pressure from the western powers, conditioning of all kinds is not “outside interference”. It is debated in Serbia as well if Radoičić was a freelancer or not. You should take into consideration tree things. First, he benefits from the political power that was given to him from Belgrade and that is one undisputed fact. It happens that people get hit in the head by their own idea of might. Second fact - if wanted to make some provocation or attack on 🇽🇰, Serbia surely have better forces to use than untrained civilians. Third, who benefits this situation? Hard to debate 23min. video in one comment but there go few thoughts. 🙋🏻♂️
As per usual, serbs complaining about violence, and how they're attacked in their homes. I remember such a case back in the day. It was a shooting in a cafe called Panda in the city of Peja in Kosova, where a few serbs were murdered and a few others injured. The repercussions for Albanians were horrible, many people have been brutally beaten and violated, because of course, the fascist serbian government blamed the Albanians. Fast forward 15 years after it happened, the fascist in charge Vucic himself admitted that there were no signs that Albanians were involved in the Panda Cafe shooting. This is but a small sample of how serbs have gone to tremendous lengths just to blame the Albanians in every way possible. When you look at the numbers, it is clear that the common denominator that massacred, raped, tortured and pillaged the most were the Serbs. As a Serbian this was a great take on recent events. The worst is that not even we know exactly what happened, it's obviously a conflict of egos (as you perfectly put it) that only few want. One major thing you only mentioned in a quote but is a huge player in the conflict is organized crime. Radoičić is the most powerful Serbian crime lord in Kosovo, doing "business" there without control and in obvious cahoots with the Serbian president. The crime was allowed to proliferate during the 90s wars, as every war breeds crime. If there are hot conflicts, we will get sanctioned by the Western world and that means businesses will leave and it will destroy the country completely, not to mention it will breed even more crime. Exact same thing as happened in Russia, but unlike Russia, we are a small country that is highly economically dependent on the European market. No one of us wants war, it's just stupid, it's suicide.
Why Serbs are the only ones capable of escalation? There are 4 main parties in Balkan conflicts: Albanians, Bosnians, Croats and Serbs. Why single out the Serbs?

Worked for a year and a half in KFOR. When it was looked at the number of escapes that you refer to. The same size was given to KFOR, but it did not fit in with population numbers before the war. It turns out that this number came from a reuters news release. Which again came from numbers provided Serbian authorities. The basis for the figures was entry and exit at the border point, not the number of individuals actually passing.
The only solution is implementaion of Community of Serbian Municipalities in Kosovo. This will reduce the violence and provide peaceful coexisting. Kurti and Kosovar goverment failure to establish CSM/ASM is the sole reason for all violence in Kosovo.
0:44 I haven't watched the rest of the video yet, but this isn't what sparked the tensions. The "ambush" was a response to illegitimate arrests of Serbian citizens, along with assaults, provocations, etc. on Serbs in the Northern Kosovo. If you start the story with the ambush, it paints a picture of Serbs as the aggressors, and not as the retaliating victims.
This conflict goes way beyond 1980s and 90s and probably will never end. Maybe the best solution is for KFOR and west to leave the area, and to let the Balkan countries resolve it.
NATO and west are not going to leave their own backyard, which Balkans is. Its true the conflict will probably always have an undertone, but since NATO entered the region, there hasn't seen any wars since 2001 ... which for Balkan standards is pretty good. You Serbs have to adjust now, you are no longer the big power in the region, every year Serbian population is rapidly shrinking. Soon there wont be many people left in Serbia and your capacity for war is shrinking too.
@@rafaelmolini4164 That backyard is getting smaller. Power shift in Europe and the world is coming. Shrinking? You do realise population of Serbia is 7 million, Bosnia and Herzegovina 1.2 million Serbs (Republika Srpska), Croatia around 200,000 and Montenegro around 200,000 and Kosovo now only roughly 100,000. Serbia also has military industry compare to Albania and Kosovo who have no military Industrie, they solely depend on the West (NATO) for military equipment. Also, Serbia has good relations with Greece, Romania Hungary, Bulgaria, North Macedonia (Macedonian Slavs) they are all allies. Slavs are the biggest ethnic group in Europe especially in Eastern part and Balkans. However, the entire world is in turmoil right now and everyone’s future is at stake.
@@rafaelmolini4164 historically speaking nato doe not have long left. Only way to peace is to let us resolve our issues, not rescue certain groups from defeat because it benefits you. Serbs have not stoped with their goal for 600 years, they sure won't stop now.
It really started with NATO entering Serbian territory. With that precedent in place, everything goes. If international law is selectively applied, it may as well not exist. We live in sad times...
@@ceramicsautoilet What was NATO's supposed reason, also happened in Croatia in 1995, it happened in Kosovo once Yugoslav forces moved out, has been happening in Ukraine, Israel/Gaza, etc. Yet, we haven't seen NATO (NATO's members) declaring war on any of these countries or regimes, bombing them, occupying their territory and later on supporting unilaterally declared independence of their secessionist regions, breaking international law, agreements and UN resolutions they signed, and effectively disregarding a fellow UN member's sovereignty which they obliged to respect.
In other words the former Yugoslav countries were about to go to the grand finale in the 90s but the international community intervened, the result is the dark cloud of resentment we see today. Until everyone that witnessed the war is long dead the rivalry is still alive and fresh. Lets hope no one lights a match
Those weren't wars between countries but pretty fierce ethnic and religious wars. Worst war was in Bosnia (1992-1995) with around 100,000 dead. Bad blood and deep hatred accumulated for many centuries in the Balkans. It never ends and never will.
I don't know what the EU expects, treating Serbia like a political leper since the 2000s - of course there's going to be lashing out, people are given cause to believe they're all alone. The unilateral independence proclamation also doesn't help - isn't the exact same thing called terrorism over in Gaza?
In Gaza it's terrorism, in Donbass and in Crimea is madman Hitlerlike Putin and Russian World conquest in Catalonia is illegal extreme political movement, in Republika Srpska is extreme nationalism and malignant Russian influence but in Kosovo it's the principle of democracy and self determination right.
Kosovo is independent and terrorist serbs can’t do anything about it, Kosovo never belonged to terrorist serbia rightfully and terrorist serbia annexed it illegally
I have yet to see the crimes against Serbs that have been committed in the recent time reported, especially two children being shot at during an orthodox holiday by an ex “Kosovo”policeman, one child ending up in a hospital. The “ethnic cleansing” has been always downplayed, but this is exactly why there is so much tension. I can understand why ethnic Albanians feel distrust with Serbs considering the Banjska situation, but why can’t anyone else see that Serbs are being treated unfairly, as second grade citizens? This video is lacking a lot of crucial information that had led us up to this point.
I was literally in Kosovo 11-12 days ago (Prizren, Skenderaj, Mitrovica and Pristina) and especially in Mitrovica the situation was super calm and easy. You can see police and KFOR enforcement, yes, but a lot of things are overpushed by media to foster the idea they are again at war or something, but they are not. I can prove it with my Instagram account easily in case you doubt my words and show you a lot of pictures.

Well, that wasn't one-sided at all and quoting Rada Trajkovic and Balkan Insight didn't hurt the credibility of this analysis one bit. I simply love how the crux of the Serbia-Kosova problem wasn't mentioned at all - the UN Security Council resolution 1244.
One needs to understand the power of the Albanian lobby abroad to realise what is happening in the Balkans. It's not just Kosovo. Albanians everywhere are trying to expand their power and buy up more land. How do I know? I live in Macedonia. It's as simple as wanting more power.
Opposite. Albanian lobby is like size of 1 restaurant. The USA/NATO looked on chessboard, found KLA terrorists, they chose Alvania with goal of destroying Serbian influence in Balkans and control Danube. Montenegro, Macedonia are their collateral damage. Love to Macedonia ❤
As a Bosnian I know a lot of Serbs, and I can tell you right now they would all rather die than recognize Kosovo as an independent country… what most people don’t understand is that Serbs don’t consider Kosovo as an enclave or some separate part of Serbia. To them, that’s their Jerusalem… heart of Serbia… most people from the Balkan’s are shocked that peace has lasted this long in that region.. if things keep going the way they are nothing good is going to come out of this
Serbs got fucked because of USA wanted to fuck them. Nothing more, nothing less. People generally have no idea what happened in Kosovo prior to 1999. and hell, most don't even know what triggered the bombing. But the Serbs were already painted as the "bad guys" from 90's wars so it was easy for USA to push more lies so they can play their own game of superpowers over the backs of smaller countries *cough cough Ukraine cough*
I didn’t say that... I’m saying Serbs would rather die than recognize Kosovo’s independence… that doesn’t mean that I don’t believe Kosovo shouldn’t be independent… they should be. And everyone should live happily ever after. But we all know that’s not gonna happen. It’s a complex problem that I personally don’t see a solution to.
Fun fact: Croatia ethnically clean, Kosovo ethnically clean, muslim part of Bosnia, ethnically clean, Slovenia ethnically clean, Serbia 25% are not Serbs, muslim town of Novi Pazar never had any incident, every big nationality has tv and schools in its own language
Why not stress that central Serbia is also ethnically clean when you did not refer to the entirety of B&H? Serbia has a few parts with mixed ethnicity and I can bet that most of these people online who are hateful towards other ethnicities do not live in those areas. Here in Vojvodina I guess we pride ourselves with multiculturalism and tolerance, I highly doubt this to be the case in Belgrade for example. In the 90s my county did not even have a majority of any ethnicity, not one was over 50% of the population, that is actually inspiring to me personally.

Just remember when Serbs talk about Greater Serbia (all Serbian ppl in one state) they were bombarded, but now Albanians have 2 states given by EU and NATO. 2 Albanian states will merge in one Greater Albania it is natural thing but some how that is possible but One state for all Serbs are not. Also Albanian agree to form Community of Serb Municipalities and they put they signature on that agreement with EU and US but somehow for more then 10 years they evade to implement this agreement with US and EU, if Serbia did something like this it would be isolated and EU and US would bring sanctions or even Bombarded, but some how Albanians from Kosovo for same thing evaded this repercussion. If Kosovo is de facto independent why do KOsovo, EU and US need Serbian Recognition, ,cos they are not independent !!!
1. Serbs did not just "talk" about Greater Serbia, they actually tried to implement it in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo through ethnic cleansing... 2. Albania was a state long before EU existed. 3. Association of Serb Municipalities is just another Republika Serbska. Albanians signed such deal after being promised of free visas regime with EU and mutual recognition of independence with Serbia. So far, neither of that has happened.
@@Swrktar yep why not all Serbs in one state (all constitution rights Serbs have in other republic of ex Yugoslavia was taken from them) but now we have two Albanian states. Serbia was state long time before Albania existed so? There was no ethnic cleansing on Kosovo. There was no any promise of Kosovo recognition by Serbia. Serbia is Internationally recognized country and by international law and UN Kosovo is part of Serbia not independent so dont need recognition from Kosovo "state". Albanians from Kosovo put signature on Association of Serb Municipalities so they should implemented it or for them are valid different rules? As I can see you granted Albanians new state on Kosovo but you denied State for Republic of Serbska (same rights), Do you agree that ppl in Donbas have right for independent state too?
@@DzIVDzAN As far as i understand, Albanians in Kosovo expect nothing from Serbia, since such promises were made from EU. Hence, the fuss between Kurti and EU envoys. It is not like Kurti was the only premier who postponed the implementation, Haradinaj and Thaci did the same too. Kurti ended up in the corner because he started implementing the former agreements one by one, and everyone in EU knows that his actions are legitimate, just that on a diplomatic level he step on wounds...and after all the shit happening in the world i see it now. From an Albanian perspective, personally, at first i thought that Rama is just a coward who would compromise any national aspiration for his own comfort, since many think he has secured power until 2029 at least. But, the tall dork has a point. Kurti should just give up on the north and let Kfor be deployed there, so that if Serbs stage another uprising, then it would be somebody else's problem. It is not like Albanians live there. As for the principle of nation-state, you are outdated my friend. No one forced former Yugoslavs to draw borders the way they did, but Albanians were forced to live in these borders against their will of self determination. Most of the delegates in 1912 when the flag was raised in Vlora, were from nowadays Kosovo, Montenegro and Southern Albania. But through time, we have come to terms, and realized that small peoples do not get to decide, and we learned the hard way. Looking back, you need to know that Kosovo Albanians lead by Rugova, did not want seccession from Yugoslavia, but they demanded a republic within the federation. Of course, no former Yugoslav would be that naive to grant them such power, in the end of the day, Albanians were not Slavs, duh. But flying the crusade banner of Serb christians against Albanian muslims when the most ruthless massacres were conducted against Albanian catholics, turned the head of many western countries. And i am not talking only about Meja massacre in 1999...but the historical ones in 1850s in nowadays Montenegro, even before reprisals agains Albanians in Nish sorroundings....and western countries know our history better than we do. Even if none of them had thought of a second Albanian state, after all of the mess in Bosnia, they just did not buy the whole 1389 story. Albanians, unlike Serbs or Bosnians, do not associate religion with their identity...and i guess that is why, we get to have two states and Serbs don't.
@@Swrktar Serbs are forced to live in these borders against their will of self determination. Albanians run out from Albania and Enver Hojah and found welcome from Serbs from Kosovo. Tito's partisans and KPJ managed uprising in Albania against Nazies, leading Albanian KPJ even had plans to make it as 7th republic of Yugoslavia. So Albanians run out from Albania and got Serbian lend on Kosovo and Serbs from Kosov and Bosnia got Volksdeutsche land in Vojvodina even Kosovo get territories from North and East which was never part of Kosovo. You're living in fantasy. The West will always side with the Muslims. They have all over the world except for when it comes to Israel.
Simon i have been a big fan of your channels for a long time, but this takes it to a whole new level. I have never seen such a good analysis of what we are living right now in Serbia. I would like to add even more context for anyone interested:
1. How Vucic came to power: He was the right hand of the former president Tomislav Nikolic, who won his seat mostly due to the dissapointment of the previous govt. He was first deputy PM, then PM and then president. His rise from someone who was just around to PM was incredibly fast. He is constantly in a coalition with SPS, the remnants of the Milosevic party, which gives him an extra 6-10% in each election
2. Vucic has almost complete control over the media in Serbia. He controls all the big TV channels, all the big newspapers and has armies of internet bots and trolls made to show false support for him or muddy the online discourse. For a lot of Serbian population that do not have acces to alternative sources of information what these media publish is the only truth they know
4. Due to Kurtis refusal to implement the associaton of Serbian municipalities the discourse in Europe has been shifted slightly into Serbias favor, only to be thrown right back after the shootout

@@alexlarsen6413 : pfffff you assume "EU" will be a thing

To give a honest opinion:
Stop trusting dictators and their propaganda because one if not all will escalate into Ultranationalism and bloodshed. That's the usage of that.
Same problem here in Albania, too many are living for a better life. It’s at a point where there is more Albanian outside of Albania than inside. This is only because of the corrupt prime ministers that put the states money into their own pockets .
But I must say, you Serbians have got to fucking relax which this Kosovo bullshit and leave us alone.

Although Hungarians and Serbs are not really meant to be friends there are striking similarities in what's happened to the respective countries in the last 100 years or so.
I am no politician so I don't have any answers but I do feel Serbia has been as badly treated by the 'international community' because of the wars in the 90's as Hungary was after WW1.

The problem is using half-information or to be more precise one-sided narrative as fact and then form layers of conclusions and explanations on wrong premises. So is it not knowing better or you just try fit the narrative of your target audience. 🤷🏻♂️
To give you couple examples.

It was a shooting in a cafe called Panda in the city of Peja in Kosova, where a few serbs were murdered and a few others injured. The repercussions for Albanians were horrible, many people have been brutally beaten and violated, because of course, the fascist serbian government blamed the Albanians. Fast forward 15 years after it happened, the fascist in charge Vucic himself admitted that there were no signs that Albanians were involved in the Panda Cafe shooting.

The "ambush" was a response to illegitimate arrests of Serbian citizens, along with assaults, provocations, etc. on Serbs in the Northern Kosovo.
If you start the story with the ambush, it paints a picture of Serbs as the aggressors, and not as the retaliating victims.
remember the last time a conflict broke out in the balkans led to?
joking guys hope this doesn't lead to much stay safe all
This conflict goes way beyond 1980s and 90s and probably will never end.
@@rafaelmolini4164 Your reply displays the very reason why us Croats must establish a temporary alliance with the Serbs.
@@rafaelmolini4164 historically speaking nato doe not have long left.
Only way to peace is to let us resolve our issues, not rescue certain groups from defeat because it benefits you.
Serbs have not stoped with their goal for 600 years, they sure won't stop now.
You mean let them go the finals that they were stopped from going in the 90's?
It really started with NATO entering Serbian territory. With that precedent in place, everything goes. If international law is selectively applied, it may as well not exist. We live in sad times...
What was Nato's reason to enter Serbia?
Kosovo was never serbian territory duh
Kosovo was never Serbian territory? I mean the name Kosovo is shorthand for Kosovo polje means Blackbird's Field i Serbian.
@@ceramicsautoilet Any reason would not work because Serbia didn't pose any threat to NATO members.
NATO is not using reasons but excuses.
It's not propaganda. Good information
What are you on
I have yet to see the crimes against Serbs that have been committed in the recent time reported, especially two children being shot at during an orthodox holiday by an ex “Kosovo”policeman, one child ending up in a hospital.

To them, that’s their Jerusalem… heart of Serbia… most people from the Balkan’s are shocked that peace has lasted this long in that region.. if things keep going the way they are nothing good is going to come out of this
This guy quite literally does not have a clue of what he is talking about. Lik blage veze nema šta priča.
If you are saying Kosova is serbia, then give republic of serbs to serbia then
I didn’t say that...

Ottoman invaders settling in the Balkans. Good for Serbia for kicking them out of Europe 🇪🇺❤️🇷🇸
Thats because there are all fascist around of serbia.

Simple as that but no Serbs are given greater Serbia or second state even now Serbs are forced to live in Bosnia and Herzegovina ruled by Muslims and Croats.
Yep they demanded Republic but Tito never give it to them, Tito punish every rebellion in blood but in that time no one care for Albanians second state. Albanians Kosovo during Titos rule had more freedom then Albanians in Albania but somehow that was not enough and they want more more more more and still they want more Never enough
