      You're absolutely right. If one angrily yells "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!" at a fairly robust volume in English, it sounds pretty intimidating too...

      Nonsense. The only efficient way of communicating is to make absolutely certain you're being heard. Therefore, German _must_ be shouted.

    I never heard about this tradition „Dickbauch“, and I’m german. And somehow german sounds a little bit different in Germany, we don’t have a problem with our hearing.

    As a German I've never heard of Dickbauch tbh, also Lebkuchen is as sweet and covered in Chocolate as it is spicy at times. The whole punishing angle and twigs part is based on old folklore, not modern rituals that are usually still practiced.

      Being German doesn't help though as you are known for being bad at every other language ;)
      Sometimes I even thing that the french are better at English then you are.
      Hard to compare when you only speak one language.
      I pass through Germany at least three times a year, speak several languages (not fluent in german though) and I still think you sound harsh/more angry compared to other languages.

    That was about the worst attempt of making German and German traditions look bad. None of what she said is remotely accurate.
    Also, Lebkuchen is simply gingerbread, just better 😂

    Even before enduring two minutes of this §$%, I realize:
    1st: Ms. Chalke should work on her disturbed relation to her (German) mother.
    2nd: Ms. Chalke and Mr. Conan may have indulged too many American movies on WWII (hence the German shouting).
    3rd: Even Americans like these two might eventually come to accept that other cultures, doing things differently, have their legitimate place on earth - it's called tolerance!

    The most of what she is telling Conan is a big pile of crap! First of all, in Germany it's not Santa who brings the presents. It's the Christkind. And shoes?!! Maybe on St. Nikolaus day (December 6th).

      have you ever read english literature? informal american english can sound very primitive because americans love slang and abbreviations. and obviously, since america is pretty much based around immigrants, refugees, colonialists and former slaves, people have all kind of different accents, so hardly anyone speaks the stereotypical oxford english that the early british settlers probably still spoke.
      and if we are talking about germans: the average german struggles with its own language (especially grammar and spelling) all the time and even with traditional dialects are dying out, people who actually speak good standard german are rare outside of academia.

    When you Google "Dickbauch" you find all But English sources that Germans call Christmas Eve that way and Not a single German Page. Being a German and Loving Christmas Traditions i can honestly say its the First time I Heard it.

    Well you have to clean your shoes on the 6th of December and only then you get the candy, not when you’re good. You get Christmas presents when you’re good and when not you get beat by the stick or Krampus comes depending on the region.
    Also german Candy and baked goods are legendary, why is she describing them so weird?

    As a German-born American, I can confirm absolutely none of this! The German language is wonderful and very precise. Christmas is contemplative and rich in tradition.In the USA, Christmas is a celebration of consumerism sponsored by Coca Cola.

    Well the sad thing is that the Americans don't really know that Santa Claus is actually called Nikolaus (German) and the right Christmas fulfils exactly that with the shoes and gifts in there. But of course Coca Cola had to invent Santa Claus and the Americans believe that this would be the real one and how they celebrate the festival right. The Us Americans are so blinded by how the world truly is and how things are truly are and how there came to be. Nikolaus was a real Person but they don't know all that

    Once upon a time, I was hired as an extra for "Scrubs." In between filming scenes, Sarah brought her dog into the extras' holding area. It was so funny, her dog was trying to meet everyone.

      @@Gsega I can't really remember the type of dog she had. It was some kind of hound or shepherd, but not a German Sheperd. It was a bigger dog with brownish fur. That was back around 2004/05. I became an extra though Central Casting, which is a specialist extras casting agency in Hollywood.

      @@maggie7843 I think she means Pfefferkuchen/Lebkuchen (Peppercakes/Gingerbread) which sometimes taste a bit like pepper. But if yu get the right ones they really don't taste like pepper. (There isn't even pepper in them. Pepper just used to be a generell term for spices.)

      Right. Nikolaus (and Krampus) are the ones with the "sinners list". The "Weihnachtsmann" or in other regions the "Christkind" come on the evening of the 24th to bring presents.

    Warum können die Leute , wenn sie Deutsch sprechen, nicht einfach normal sprechen? Deutsche sprechen nicht so. Und hier werden deutsche Traditionen vertauscht und vermischt.
    Nicht jede Tradition die eine deutschstämmige Familie hat, steht für alle deutschen Familien. Ich finde es oft witzig, aber hier wird alles regelrecht beleidigt und lächerlich gemacht.
