That would be cool if theres a video on how to mount and place shocks, such as cycling the main leaf on the pack and finding the correct position for the shocks.
That is a great idea!!! We will try and get that into our program schedule for the television show. We know it can be tricky for someone that hasn't done it before, so thanks again for the idea...keep them coming.
Maybe it's fine but I thought you would have added gussets to the bed mounting flanges. Seems like a very strong cage held on by four little flat flanges.
@Baja714 Best thing to do is Google Dimple Dies, there are a lot of option out there. The shocks we used are 14" long. Thanks for the comment we plan on reading some of our user submitted comments in the next episode.
Yes we did...good question. I can't remember the exact angle but I think we mention it in some of the voice-overs. Those are 16" 3.0 double-bypass shocks
Awesome videos! Off road racing has become my new passion. Love learning all I can and seeing how its done! Keep up the good work. Only suggestion i have is letting us know the size of material used for the builds! Again great videos!
We could've done the round top hoop if it were an F-150 but that radius would have been tight on our Ranger. Glad you liked the video even though you hate the bedcage..LOL
As long as they are between 14" and 16" then yes. You will need long travel leaf springs to take full advantage of a bedcage. Stock leaf spring packs won't "Droop" out enough.
Awsome channel. im allweys keeping up to date with you guys gives me awsome idieas on how to built for my silverado just done the rollcage front suspension now I need to buit the rollcage this definitely helps
@prerunnerlover Yes we hope soon too...it is taking much longer than we thought it would...hang in there we will get the next video up as soon as we can.
@illdieinthegym More power and better gas mileage are really polar opposites. It is hard to get more power and better gas mileage. The only way I can see this is if you get a professional tune on the engine, but don't expect too much more power. It is still a 4 cyl.
cool dude! at the shop we got 3 class 7sx, ill send you some pics, one is being prepped for a local race on nov 2nd, the other is being prepped for the baja 1000 * they actually won 1st place in class 7sx this baja 500. and mine thats being built slowly XD.
oh ok thanks quick question though i don't plan on jumping my truck or anything i just want it for the sand dunes n a lil offroading can i still make a bed cage like the one in the video
Prerunner refers to the type of customization done on the truck where we take offroad racing inspired suspension and put it on the truck so it can be driven faster through the desert. Prerunners are typically 2wd and I guess that is where Toyota got that name because it looks like their 4wd truck but it is only 2wd
You could still make a mini bedcage but it hardly seems worth it is you aren't going to get extra travel out of them. They are also too long to fit in the factory location. We used to have 8" Fox shocks mounted there and they were really too long.
How much stability does this give the bed? I know its more about the suspension but I dont like the bed rocking and flexing which is the selling point for me building a cage
I honestly wouldn't go to the desert with this setup. Maybe if you're looking for something functional, that looks good. But not fully functional for a desert truck imo. The top, and bottom of the bed wasn't even reinforced with flat steel to give it strength. If you want something fully functional, and ready for the desert, i'd suggest cutting into the bed, and anchoring it to the frame. That's just my opinion though. Hate mail/comments welcomed.
connor melvin Their fabricator is an amazing fabricator, don't get me wrong. He builds some pretty amazing concepts. However, this really does not look like it would support suspension. You go hard enough, and everything gets heated enough, those shocks are going to put an extreme amount of pressure on the overall structure and somethings gonna give. That's imho.
Derrick Spoelhof I understand they're not supposed to take a hardcore beating, however, a prerunner is made to take a beating. I can only assume that 30 minutes through a whoop section would stress this cage out dramatically. I could be wrong, just my opinion. I think the fabricator is a very skilled, and talented fabricator, I just doubt how well this would actually work out in the desert. We built prerunners, to prerun. If it's not functional, why build it. That's just my philosophy.
+AmerikanPsyko I'm not trying to be a critic, but I agree. This is built to look cool. I think the cage would hold up fine (although it needs a vertical bar from top to bottom near the shock). Its the 4 chinsey mounting tabs that are going to fail in a woop section. If nothing else I would use tubing between the right and left side of the base and then bosses with grade 8 hardware in place of the tabs. It makes no sense for the mounting point to be the weakest point.
Can you explain the purpose/ benefit of running the shock on top of the leaf spring? wouldn't they work better together if the shock was mounted on the rear end housing instead of on top of the leaf? I understand that you are gaining axle drop and more travel but wouldn't it perform better with the shock mounted to the rear axle and get a longer shock? or ditch the leafs in general and add coil overs?
So you didnt weld your bedcage to the frame at all? Just used the bed mounting bolts? Will that hold up? I like the idea of not cutting up my bed too much,
+Matt Eiswerth I had a simular set up on my Ranger just using the stock bed mounts and it held up fine, mostly just a daily driver that I would take out on the weekends but I wouldn't recommend it if you're going to push the limits of your prerunner.
That would be cool if theres a video on how to mount and place shocks, such as cycling the main leaf on the pack and finding the correct position for the shocks.
i like how these guys are so relaxed about cutting into a pick up truck
That is a great idea!!! We will try and get that into our program schedule for the television show. We know it can be tricky for someone that hasn't done it before, so thanks again for the idea...keep them coming.
Glad our show helps you. Nice to hear comments like yours. Send us some pics when you're done!!!
Maybe it's fine but I thought you would have added gussets to the bed mounting flanges. Seems like a very strong cage held on by four little flat flanges.
Incredible everything that goes into building a bed cage! Very informative video, thanks!
@Baja714 Best thing to do is Google Dimple Dies, there are a lot of option out there.

No there is a hole in the bed and that is one long shock. That is why you build a bedcage to mount longer shocks for more travel.
What was the size of the shock
Thanks...those BF Goodrich Tires are 285x75x16. Now that that part is done We wish we would've gotten 35's instead of 33's
We are going to be filming it real soon.
Sorry I meant 2.5", with the spare tire and jack in the bed along with our new bumper in the rear it is the right shock...rides like a Caddy now.
Awesome Video.
Awsome channel. im allweys keeping up to date with you guys gives me awsome idieas on how to built for my silverado just done the rollcage front suspension now I need to buit the rollcage this definitely helps
@MrAndrade91 Glad you liked the video. We are already working on episode 3 where we are going to build a tire carrier and rear bumper.
Adem what's up your truck has come a long ways
Glad you like it!!!
@prerunnerlover It is .120 wall 1.75" DOM tubing, and yes use the same size for the bumper.
Love the fab work! Gives me some inspiration for my own ranger!
@prerunnerlover Yes we hope soon too...it is taking much longer than we thought it would...hang in there we will get the next video up as soon as we can.
We just shot episode 3 last weekend and editing right now, so it shouldn't be long before our bumper and tire carrier video is up.
cant wait till next episode! SUBSCRIBED!
@chillyhil Glad you liked the video!!!
I agree, a little slag never hurt anyone too bad...LOL

No a 1996 uses I-Beams, 1998 is when Rangers became IFS. Check our Camburg or Giant Motorsports
Cool be sure to send us some pics when you get it done!!!

@DJTONER1 Thanks for the idea...we will keep this on file for the future
Ya we've made huge improvements in the audio department in our later episodes
@andre4201 luckily no we didn't. Yes we should have used a welding blanket over the cab.
no voice audio
Wish you could hear what he's saying
Yeah... Exactly what you said, Sometimes you get lazy and dont really care. After a while you get use to the slag.
oh ok thanks quick question though i don't plan on jumping my truck or anything i just want it for the sand dunes n a lil offroading can i still make a bed cage like the one in the video
@esjohansen821 We are working on it...since the racing season has started it is keeping us busy.
Not sure what you mean make a 2001 model. This format can be used in a lot of different trucks.
How about a video showing how to use the bender without wasting a bunch of round stock? I heard beginners go through a lot of tubing while learning.
Sorry you feel that way. How would you build it?
They are 16" 2.5" double bypass shocks
Prerunner refers to the type of customization done on the truck where we take offroad racing inspired suspension and put it on the truck so it can be driven faster through the desert. Prerunners are typically 2wd and I guess that is where Toyota got that name because it looks like their 4wd truck but it is only 2wd
You would be looking at around $500 to $2500 depending on how complex you get and the fab shop you use.
Yes it bothered us as well. We have already invested a couple grand in new mics for the show.
Pretty close but you wouldn't want to mount the shocks straight up and down
@MrAndrade91 We are planning on shooting the next 2 videos at the same time so we can release them to you guys sooner.
@adultdvd54 Yes there are more coming. The next one we show you how to build a rear prerunner bumper that will have a tire carrier built into it.
You are correct, that stuff just didn't make it in the final video.
That is a MIG welder. You will recognize a TIG welder when the welder is holder the wand and the wire to feed
o. i like the truck though. the rear bumper is sick. my friend has a ranger and we r gona try to make one like that
You could still make a mini bedcage but it hardly seems worth it is you aren't going to get extra travel out of them. They are also too long to fit in the factory location. We used to have 8" Fox shocks mounted there and they were really too long.
Does the tower hold up that well mounted to those horizontal tabs held by the bed bolts rather than tubes that goto the frame itself?
wow ! nice finally some fun entertainment
Do y'all use 2 shocks on 1 side because its looks like there is 1 under the truck & 1 in the bed of the truck
Not a fan of the upper mounts for the shocks. Would probably be fine though.
When's the spare tire video coming?
I loke the how to vid's, is there more coming?
Thanks for the props!!!
waiting for that next video!
Be sure to send us some pics. We'd love to see your Ranger!!!
How much stability does this give the bed? I know its more about the suspension but I dont like the bed rocking and flexing which is the selling point for me building a cage
So its only really dupprted from the sheet metal of the bed? None of its support welded to the frame?
What kind of shocks did you use in the back prerunnermaniac
I honestly wouldn't go to the desert with this setup. Maybe if you're looking for something functional, that looks good. But not fully functional for a desert truck imo. Im whatching this thinking the same thing.

You go hard enough, and everything gets heated enough, those shocks are going to put an extreme amount of pressure on the overall structure and somethings gonna give. That's imho.
AmerikanPsyko these builds are definitely not made to take hardcore abuse for extended periods of time, which is what a prerunner is supposed to be.
Derrick Spoelhof I understand they're not supposed to take a hardcore beating, however, a prerunner is made to take a beating. I confused, you built this big heavyduty cage, but its held in with 4 little bolts? What are the bolts running into on the bed?
It's using the factory bed bolts...
what welder are you using in this video? mig or tig?
id sure like to buy that bed cage for my truck! any chances of making another one for a ranger? and shipping it to me.
what size are the fox shocks on the factory location?
Can you explain the purpose/ benefit of running the shock on top of the leaf spring? wouldn't they work better together if the shock was mounted on the rear end housing instead of on top of the leaf? coil overs are not as stable as leafs with bypasses. Also have fun finding a coil with 16"+ of travel. At that point you might as well just link it
I know we are working on it.
i have a question how choose the right rear shock? because is depend the weight of your truck
Sure there are tons of people that run their prerunners in the dunes.
@M6powerBMW I wish we could do everyone's prerunner, but these videos are really expensive to produce.
Don't waste good tubing, practice on 1-5/8 electrical conduit from HD. Super cheap
i have a 96 ford ranger n i have fox 2.0 shocks can i mount them the same way in the video?
So you didnt weld your bedcage to the frame at all? Just used the bed mounting bolts? Will that hold up? I like the idea of not cutting up my bed too much,
On my Chevy the bed bolts to the frame.
+Matt Eiswerth I had a simular set up on my Ranger just using the stock bed mounts and it held up fine, mostly just a daily driver that I would take out on the weekends but I wouldn't recommend it if you're going to push the limits of your prerunner.
it will hold up to speed bumps in mall parking lots
Didn't see other comments thanks!!
What tubing did you use?
damn thats a lot of shock
I'M looking for a long travel suspention for my 2010 Ford Ranger XLT 4WD 4.0L
Btf fabrication look them up
+Thomas Brierley thanks
is there anywhere i can find dimensions and measurements for this build? I'd like to do the same thing with my Ranger.
What kind of steel tube is that
would an opposite angle of 30* be a 1:1 ratio?
Why do you want the shocks at 30 degrees
@DJTONER1 Thanks be sure to share this on Facebook. The more views we get the easier it is for us to do more videos.
I know we are working on it, to quote Mr. Miyagi, "Patience Daniel Son"...LOL
Hey, sorry if I just missed it, but what size tubing did you use?
*****
I think we used 1.75"
Yes when you been welding as long as our fabricator you sometimes get lazy.
We will see...this truck never gets jumped or in a situation where the rear suspension is in full droop so it should be ok.
That's great. Be sure to send us some pics on the Prerunner Maniac site...just go to the contact page and send us an email.
1.75" .120 wall DOM tubing
Do you know where this shop is in nevada?
What size steel?
how many hours for built this bedcage?
oh mine are 12" what should i do to mount them
I don't think its ugly! I want one for my truck!
hello can you tell me which is what I am used to mexico please could you make a ford 2001 model?
what the size of your shocks?
