Toyota Highlander is our favorite because we had a Ford Explorer back in Jan 2006 when we were moving from the East Coast to Denver & U-Haul REFUSED to rent to us. Claimed this was due to the massive amount of Explorer roll overs & that Ford had not only blamed Goodyear but had also blamed U-Haul anytime it happened to occur when someone was towing a U-Haul.
We ended up having to rent a Ryder truck AND a tow package so we could tow our Explorer behind the rental truck. If not we'd have had to sell our Explorer because I had broken my leg in multiple spots & couldn't drive, my husband had to.
So yeah, Highlander for personal accountability & the fact that knock on wood it's never left our daughter and grand kids stranded

@@mikeh5044 Ford has followed the crappy path GM and Chrysler have. I have no problem with you driving a Toyota but Ford used to make excellent, amazing vehicles. Their older Explorers are amazing, they keep on going. I am never going to buy any new vehicle as I lost respect for them making things more complex, cheaper, and harder to repair yourself. I am only going to buy older vehicles as they are just much easier and especially cheaper to take care of. Looking forward to owning a 1991 - 2005 Ford Explorer. Quality was in mind. Funny because I bought a new 2021 Explorer Limited in March of this year. In May, when I started to use the AC, it was blowing cold air only on the passenger side. Took two separate trips to the dealer and about 10 days total for them to figure it out. Plus they do not have enough loaner cars to give out. We had leased 5 Honda Pilots in a row (every 3 years starting in 2005). We decided to switch it up and go with the Explorer, we kinda regret it. Though, the Explorer is a very good looking vehicle.

Bought it at 130k miles for $250 because the transmission was going and that's what scrap value was at the time. 50k miles later and I haven't done anything with the transmission except learn to coax it into 2nd gear with the gas pedal. It's my work truck and regularly carries 1000 lbs of tools and a 3500lb trailer. I've also done some light off-roading and no matter how bad the roads get with snow and ice I always make it to the job, and having a true 4x4 with actual low range comes in handy for pulling trees down. I can't speak to the Toyota but I don't think comparing a full framed SUV to a unibody crossover is a fair comparison.

She gave the highlander to my brother at 200k miles. No mechanical issues at all. My brother shipped the highlander to Dubai where he too used it for business. He drove that thing in a dust storm. Besides minor suspension issues, no problem with the car. 300k miles. He brought it back home to the states 3 years ago after he got married. He bought a new 2018 highlander for the family, and to this day he removed the rear seats and uses that 07 highlander as a work truck. The odometer froze at 350,000 miles. Still runs like a dream.

I've since added 10k miles and she's been really solid and extremely comfortable. I even towed a 3,000lb trailer cross-country and averaged 19mpg (not bad!). Because it's a hybrid with 2WD, I regularly get 28-29mpg which is amazing in a 7-seater. I bought this as a "do it all car" and it's living up to it. I paid $6,800 to a private seller which I thought was a really good deal given the low mileage and that most dealers were asking closer to 9-12k in the mileage/condition this car was in.

Just replaced the entire front suspension again and the original struts finally crapped the bed 155K 23yrs old! I got a new cardone power steering pump and both rack hoses to replace. Then I'm going re-gasket the top of the engine. Like you say Scotty, Toyota, they will run forever if you take care of them! You're the man!

2016 Highlander. My wife has one and we love it. Planning on a 20 year + vehicle.

The Highlander was always one of those vehicles I just never bothered to look at. It just wasn’t very interesting because there was always a better option available.

It is a boring truck but it’s incredibly reliable. Newer ones are super nice but the base models feel somewhat Spartan.

I put 100k miles on a Gen1 Explorer and 213K miles on a Gen 2 Explorer. I am currently shopping for a '22 or '23 Explorer Platinum. When I find the right one, I'll buy it.

I own a 2018 highlander, bought used and only has now after 2 years 37,000 on it. No problems at all. Even with the V6 model gas mileage is very good. No regrets, hope to have this car forever.
