It's so awesome you're open minded. That's a lot of what drew me to keep watching your videos. I'm not a fan of pop myself but I do respect some of it every once in a while. I might even give the bass line for this one a shot!
I already learned it. I just need to clean it up. It was easier than i thought. But yeah keep on being the coolest youtuber and ill stick around with my SpicyWeiner in the comment sections
Great review and I like your open mindedness! Charlie is actually pretty knowledgeable when it comes to the music industry and music theory. He's involved in writing and producing almost all of his songs and plays a handful of instruments, including piano and guitar very well, and went to Berklee College of Music - a very prestigious conservatoire. He also has perfect pitch which I am very jealous of!! I do think that his debut album was very cheesy pop, but it did have a few catchy tunes, and that kinda stuff is my guilty pleasure!
The blonde headed chick in the video is an Australian actress I used to watch her on Home and Away an Australian Drama shit show forgot her name though!
I agree with you all the way on this one. digging the bass, catchy chorus, didn't like the high vocals and repetitive lyrics, but overall decent video and song for modern pop.
Franklin Gauthier-Parker I don't mind the falsetto as long as he would've added more dynamic by belting some parts opposed to falsetto just singing the same notes though
Head voice and falsetto is getting more popular for men. And some of what he's using is technically "white head voice" (voce di testa bianca) which uses a different resonance than falsetto, and it can eventually be developed into belting and middle-voice in males. If more males are encouraged to use head voice in general without it being "gay", they'll eventually learn to bridge through their passagios/passagi and then that'll open up the extremely absent classic rock voice which is actually extremely skilled technically-- it can't be done without having skill in both chest register and head register bc males middle voice (betwen first and second passagio) is extremely narrow in pitch range so it requires precise bridging and muscle memory or your voice at every ascending pitch or you'll crack or you could even blow out your voice from stress (hoarseness). They'll also be much more likely to develop vibrato and squillo bc that requires some of the pharyngeal control that develops in head voice (not falsetto). Without it, air pressure in the pharynx is too compressed when most of the compression should be below the larynx, not above it, or else it'll destroy the pressure gradient and force the vocal folds to open again mid-note. The issue is vocal pedagogy not knowing how to apply a separate set of registration categories to male vocals in spite of the obvious difference in anatomy. The concept of multiple passagi for males is seen as unorthodox outside of classical music training, when it's actually just biology. The space between them, like I said, is shorter than females but they still exist and some lighter tenors even have a third passagi if they have coloratura and/or whistle registration. To ignore them risks completely screwing up your pupils' voices. Mistaking head voice for falsetto is another issue. Falsetto can be applied to chest voice, middle voice, or head voice. It's simply the larynx making only the false vocal folds fully meet together, so some air escapes as a hiss and the true vocal folds (where sounds that can actually gain harmonics are produces) don't occlude fully and therefore destroy some or most of the acoustics. Head voice is just when your muscular switches from aretynoid coordination-- air pressure regulation to vary pitch-- to cricothryoid coordination that pulls the entire vocal cord anatomy horizontally to make the cord surface that the air strikes take up more horizontal space but less mass per square unit (probably down to micrometers of thickness still changes the pitch drastically). Falsetto can be applied to any coordination bc it involves how much slack the vocal cords are given, not which surrounding muscles are most active. More fun facts become I'm going full-tilt autistic with your comments sections: Females' middle voice spans twice the range of males, which is why-- honestly-- more of them get popular sooner specifically for their range (we're currently range obsessed) bc they can expand their range faster than males, especially since males have to relearn their voice completely midstream at puberty. The larynx tilts in an entirely different direction and the entire thing gets heavier and thicker, and females don't get a tilt and only the cords thicken to a minor degree while the rest of the changes are actually due to sympathetic vibration in the places that have really changed (pharnygeal, oral, nasal and sinus cavities).
The thing is: good music (read: well made, consistent and coherent with its target audience, feel and taste) is to be appreciated regardless of genre. The metal crowd generally fails to grasp this concept, you seem (i'm guessing you are a producer or something of the sort) like you get this one simple fact and that's pretty refreshing nowadays. Free yourself of the precocenptions of what is "correct" and what you should and shouldn't like, that's bs, keep an open mind always; this is something i came to understand after i actually started making music (went from writing crazy stuff on guitar pro to actually making songs and beats for a lot of different people) and i found myself suddenly enjoying a huge variety of music. Glad i did.
This. Was. Awesome. This was a great reaction video. One of the best. Your reaction was genuine and your interpreted the song greatly. You just gained a subscriber! Also I'm probably gonna watch a lot more of your vids after I comment on this. I love Charlie puth and this song is one of my favorites. But your a lot like my dad. He's not into pop songs or newer songs like that but I wish he would at least give some songs a chance like you do. Cause not all pop songs are garbage. But anyway solid vid i loved it
Stay awesome dude, I enjoy your uploads and honest opinion on music, this type of pop music isnt my cup of tea, but i enjoy how you dont just limit yourself to reacting to one specific genre, always fun to watch these. \m/
Could be.....like the intention is he is supposed to be lifeless. As a guy who has had his rounds in acting (I'm not a good actor btw) I guess I just saw through it. Either way, that is a good way of looking at it. As always, fantastic seeing you here dude \m/
No problem man, love the work you put into your videos \m/ You could be right about him just being a bad actor, but the fact that it was greenlit and put in the video makes me think a little more about the intention.
What's funny is despite him singing in his falsetto so often, he actually has a really deep speaking voice. Not quite as deep as yours, but definitely deeper than average lmao
I LOVE your review, you sound like you actually have knowledge of what goes into a good song. The lyrics simple but still sophisticated, where a lot of modern pop could sound like a 15 year old high schooler who failed english class wrote it (Most Girls by Hailee Steinfeld anyone?). The sequence of instrumentals is great, the anti drop (where the bassline comes in) is great, the addition of the harmonies during the second half of the second chorus is fantastic, and everything just flows together really nicely. I also totally agree with word repetition!!!! At least it wasn't too bad and the rest of the song was great so it can be excused. But about his acting in the music video - that probably isn't his fault since I'm sure he didn't have too much say in the actual music video, and he's not an actor lol. But yeah he did produce the entire song by himself but I'm sure corporate guys probably intervened on the music video. And about his high pitched voice, I believe he's actually a light baritone, he has a really deep speaking voice. I think he's just not vocally trained (he's only been singing for a few years) and probably relies too much on his falsetto and needs to strengthen his lower register. I am the same way, I have a pretty deep voice for a girl but I can only really sing in my head voice because my chest voice is so weak. But overall I really think this was a terrific review, finally someone who sounds intelligent.
Hey mike,i recently heard song by harry styles its called sign of the times he was in one direction i think,im not into pop music but that song is better than most of a pop song nowdays,i really want to see ur reaction, thanks :D
Not sure if you've checked out any Japanese rock/metal (visual kei) bands but i thought i wanted to request you some! X JAPAN - Art of life (a 30 minute long rock symphony, probably too long for a reaction video though.), Kurenai, Rusty nail, sadistic desire, weekend. watch their live performances, they barely have any music videos. their lives are also much better imo dir en grey - obscure (this one will probably make a good reaction video lol wagakki band - senbonzakura (metal mixed with traditional japanese music.) i don't want to request you some really typical jrock bands cause i think it would be a lot to take in for someone who hasn't listened to it before, but if you're curious check out these bands too; the gazette, girugamesh, versailles, nocturnal bloodlust, dadaroma, mejibray, exist trace, matenrou opera.
I've actually reviewed Senbonzakura and Art of Life on Song Suggestion Friday.....and Faith and Decision by Versailles lol! I really liked all of them! My favorite was definitely Versailles. They kicked ass \m/
I thought about doing that. Don't know that there's enough to do a whole video on. Long story short, not bad. Too chill for my tastes but better than I expected from a former member of One Direction.
Although I agree with what you had said in terms of musicality, I disagree with the meaning behind the song. In my perspective, it is a guy who is trying to get over his ex (he probably broke it off but still has feelings) but is having difficulty because his ex is stringing him along for "attention" more to seduce him for her ego stroke not that she wants to be with him and he sees that. On a side note, I may have a big place for pop music (mostly because I dance to it as a hobby - heels dance) but I too have issues with a lot of that music genre nowadays that you talk about especially lyrically, however, I also listen to other genres including classic rock and heavy metal. I recently stumbled upon your channel and instantly have been a big fan!! Keep doing what you are doing!! 🙌🙌🙌
Holy shit, this song is actually good. Perfect example that modern pop music doesn't have to be bad and can definitely be good, it just simply usually isn't. Not gonna lie, there has been some decent pop music come out lately. The new Weezer song comes to mind. Their new song was like "How to experiment with pop as a rock band 101", also, I know you probably aren't a fan, but have you heard the new Fall Out Boy song? I know you probably don't like them anyways, but they decided to experiment with EDM...and...well it's complete and utter shit. Maybe a reaction to that song in the future? Anyways, great video as always Mike. You're one of the best smaller TH-camrs there, and I really do enjoy watching your videos.
Fucking hell, this song is played at least once an hour on the radio where I work, and it drives me nuts... I thought it was Ed Sheeran, one day that radio will be going out of the window I think
I just saw a bunch of your videos and I do like your insight on music (subscribed). I would love your opinion or reaction to Adam Lambert voice. He did change sound quite a bit on his new solo album but I still think he's damn good. So I don't know-- if you happen to come across some of his work or even some of his live performances with Queen I'd like to hear what you think about him.
Thanks for expressing some frustration towards falsettos ... ! I totally agree with you . The bass line is amazing . I also thought I would hate this song but I didn't ...
Dashiell Sisson The policy is I give my honest opinion. I won't do a video unless you have a video and it's worth commenting to my audience. if it doesn't meet that criteria, you'll have to go to Patreon, which may be out of your realistic price range for one critique. I'd be willing to do a deal for one-time critique with a PayPal donation. Sorry if it seems harsh, but I have very limited time and have have lot of people asking me for feedback.
Yeah man no worries, unfortunately I don't have any videos, just SoundCloud stuff. Also I'm a student so it's tough money wise. I was just wondering because I'm into Latin jazz, fusion, classical, rock/metal and it's tough getting an an audience, especially people my age.
Can you please review Charlie Puth's Voicenotes album? I know pop isn't your thing and it isn't mine either but I do think Charlie is an exception in comparison to the rest of mainstream pop artists and their content.
I have been wanting to start listening to dream theater but i dont know what album i should start with and since you're such a big fan, I thought I would ask you
Depends upon your taste in music. My first DT album was Images and Words, and I really wasn't impressed with it until a few years later when I re-listened to it (and had a different perspective on music). It's kinda hard to recommend whole albums without knowing your music taste........Here's the ones that most people gravitate towards: Images and Words Train of Thought Metropolis Pt. 2 Awake The first one that really turned me onto them was Dramatic Turn of Events (mixed reception from the fans because the drummer change).
i lost it at "Charlie Ppputh!" at the end, when you add a comedic effect to your videos, it just makes for a great experience. Sure, it's good to be serious when talking about music, but at the same time, sounding too "professional" just makes it feel less like i'm directly interacting with ya, and instead watching some guy on tv.
What annoys me a little about this song is that for me he sounds way too much like The Weeknd (with the falsetto and the bassline). And even in the music video he reminds me of him (sitting on the couch in a dark room, with the camera zooming to his face). All in all it's not a bad song but I don't know if it's only me but he just reminds me too much of The Weeknd
I really dont see what people like about the Weekend`s Starboy. Ituses that cliche where he only sings about money and cars and stuff, too much falsetto and that awful haircut. And also the 10 tons of autotune..
Zackattack 3601 I don't like his lyrics either but actually Starboy is the first video with his new haircut and I think he sings really well live (I think he uses autotune for the sound and not because he needs it). But of course Falsetto is always a matter of taste, I like it but not everyone agrees on that. I think he makes cool music, I dislike his lyrics but I think that he is one of the better ones in the popular genre
Blabla Tarantino Your probably right The Weeknd isnt as bad as some others. And I believe that he has an ok voice but the autotune just takes the natural beauty of his voice away, as is the case with many others too. Despite that he managed to make a somewhat cool music video.
Some guys range is that high, in my opinion Charlie's lower voice/range is absolutely garbage. I'd much rather listen to him sounding like a girl with a GOOD voice rather than listen to his shitty lower register. Just my opinion though.
That's understandable. There's a difference between using your range naturally and going falsetto. Singing high is fine (I can dig James LaBrie and Bruce Dickinson). Just too much falsetto for my taste. Either way, thanks for leaving your thoughts and watching my vid dude \m/
what's your stand point on electronica? imo, most is the same of as pop for me, but artists like Jack Garratt can put together some good harmonics and loops.
What I think Charlie Puth needs to do is something similar to Freddie Mercury where falsetto can be a signature of his but he can't make it every single note. I wanna hear what is normal voice sounds like
I really like this song, and also really like Gojira, Impending Doom, Cattle Decapitation and Within Destruction. I like hip hop too, and i'm proud of me but nobody cares haha jokes on me
I think in song they used to date he broke up up with her because he realized she was shallow that's where the chorus comes in she's whining he broke up with me for no reason he is a piece of s*** meanwhile he wanted more out of the relationship than she was willing to give that's why during the temper tantrum scene he didn't react you just want attention you don't want my heart got me thinking back to When You Were Mine... my gym please this song to death it's actually a really good Break Up Song if you think about it
I totally agree; that authentic bass line is surprising for a pop song.
actually that bass was created through library not the actually bass guitar
Holy shit you let go of your whiskey
I even surprised myself lol!
+Become The Knight please react to disturbed
Need the wiskey to be a snob wear a robe to! and react to the sound of silence by disturbed
Mike putting down his whiskey is like Trump getting elected president. No one thought it would happen but It did
Lol!!!
I as a trump fan liked this comment
It's so awesome you're open minded. That's a lot of what drew me to keep watching your videos. I'm not a fan of pop myself but I do respect some of it every once in a while. I might even give the bass line for this one a shot!
It's a decent bass line man. Give it a shot. As always, thanks for your support \m/
I already learned it. I just need to clean it up. It was easier than i thought. But yeah keep on being the coolest youtuber and ill stick around with my SpicyWeiner in the comment sections
Become The Knight I'm ready for you to tear me a new one for my cover of this song
Problem with pop music is that most of songs aren’t GOOD but just CATCHY 😏
thank you mike for showing me a pop song that isnt pure trash
Dragonbornf898 thanks for watching dude \m/
no problem man love your content
Dragonbornf898 mike is there any way that you could make a nice pop song ? like instruments , lower voice , something
Dragonbornf898 when did he do that cause this song is fing horrible
0
The saddest thing is they did a "remix" of this song....WITHOUT THE BASS!!! The best part about the song!!
You should know that every song on Voicenotes he produced himself. He also comes from a jazz piano background and Berklee school of music
Mike is going to turn into a pop music junkie now. Oh nos.
Only if pop starts having epic venture bridges......then I'll consider it :P
Become The Knight hell yeah
The blonde headed chick in the video is an Australian actress I used to watch her on Home and Away an Australian Drama shit show forgot her name though!
She is damn cute.
竜虎風森 it’s falsetto, cause it has a breathy quality to it. Definitely not head voice
dont know why im responding to this now but.. damn, i just read ur hr long essay and i have no idea what it means but ok... "what he/she said"
This is super autistic but super fascinating

I didn't know that existed. I don't think I wanted to know that existed.

just messing. i actually have to agree that this is a pop song that isnt ABSOLUTE trash. so thanks mike.

Thanks for the good vibes Trisha \m/
Nah. I like the song as well. That bassline shows that keeping it simple sometimes is great.
Simple is always great and always more impressive to me. Simple (yet effective and addictive) melodies are one of the hardest things to do.
and damn the glass went down!
I'm a professional \m/
Just wanted to say that i love your videos. They are really cool and funny. My dad toured with a lot of rock bands like Gnr, Aerosmith and kiss.
No shit! That's super cool! Thanks so much for the good vibes \m/
Become The Knight No problem! Your videos are great i can't wait for new ones
I hear some metallica in your voice haha.
5:38 I actually thought it was intentional, as a way of depicting how he's put himself through this so much it no longer phases him, he expects it.
The Bass line is just awesome
I would say that I'd hate to see fanart of you and Charlie Puth embracing... but that would be hilarious.
LOLOLOL!!!!!!!!
I've been a bassist for about almost 2 years and holy crap when I heard that bass comes in, I was like "Oh crap, Ok? Damn"
Hahaha I like your honest opinion on this and had to laugh when you said that about the fan girls xD
Thanks Mai \m/
can you react to harry styles solo stuff
Sum Dud, I would love to see it. I actually like his album, it's impressive that a guy who was in a boy group did something like that
What's funny is despite him singing in his falsetto so often, he actually has a really deep speaking voice. Not quite as deep as yours, but definitely deeper than average lmao

What do you think about pop in the 70's and 80's? And also, what are your thoughts about Avenged Sevenfold?
Not sure if you've checked out any Japanese rock/metal (visual kei) bands but i thought i wanted to request you some!
X JAPAN - Art of life (a 30 minute long rock symphony, probably too long for a reaction video though.), Kurenai, Rusty nail, sadistic desire, weekend. watch their live performances, they barely have any music videos. their lives are also much better imo
dir en grey - obscure (this one will probably make a good reaction video lol
wagakki band - senbonzakura (metal mixed with traditional japanese music.)
i don't want to request you some really typical jrock bands cause i think it would be a lot to take in for someone who hasn't listened to it before, but if you're curious check out these bands too;
the gazette, girugamesh, versailles, nocturnal bloodlust, dadaroma, mejibray, exist trace, matenrou opera.
I've actually reviewed Senbonzakura and Art of Life on Song Suggestion Friday.....and Faith and Decision by Versailles lol! I really liked all of them! My favorite was definitely Versailles. They kicked ass \m/
If I get the chance I'll check out your other suggestions. So far I really love the way the Japanese approach music.
Discovered your channel not too long ago, and it's really cool stuff!
That bass is undeniably great
Love the content so brutally honest I like it
Mike never reacted to the metallica album hardwired to self destruct , but reacted to charlie puth. hmmmm Triggered.
That Guy he said he didn't like it, now you know lol
I'm interested to see your opinion on sign of thevtimes by harry styles
I thought about doing that. Don't know that there's enough to do a whole video on. Long story short, not bad. Too chill for my tastes but better than I expected from a former member of One Direction.
“Budget blonde Emma Stone...” BRUH 😂😂😂😭😭
If you listen to him in interviews he’s actually a very skilled musician
Pearl Jam Pearl Jam Pearl Jam Pearl Jam
That bass line was nice. I appreciated it.

Ever since you suggested Octavision in your song suggestion Friday I can't stop listening to their song.

Dude you'll get no s*** from me I actually love this song first time I heard that bass line I instantly was like yes more of this please

I appreciate that man \m/ I'll be doing it intermittently.
Bro that BASS is fooonky, remember repetition legitimizes
Thanks for expressing some frustration towards falsettos ... ! I totally agree with you . The bass line is amazing . I also thought I would hate this song but I didn't ...
Mike, what's your policy on review fan music, I've got several instrumental pieces and I was wondering if I could get some honest feedback?
Hated his first album and the lil Wayne song he did
Second one was surprisingly good
That bass line is awesome!
Totally agree with you Mike \m/
I have been wanting to start listening to dream theater but i dont know what album i should start with and since you're such a big fan, I thought I would ask you
Depends upon your taste in music. My first DT album was Images and Words, and I really wasn't impressed with it until a few years later when I re-listened to it (and had a different perspective on music). It's kinda hard to recommend whole albums without knowing your music taste........Here's the ones that most people gravitate towards:
Images and Words
Train of Thought
Metropolis Pt. 2
Awake
The first one that really turned me onto them was Dramatic Turn of Events (mixed reception from the fans because the drummer change).
Thanks i will try them out
You should check out gorillaz
Nature Valley I'm pretty sure he did on one of his Song Suggestion Fridays
Kenny McCormick but a video just about them it would be cool, they're getting a lot of attention now with the new album so... more views lol
but like one of the new ones, because I haven't really found anything I like, so I want to see if he can help out.
when you set down ur drink u aren't a music snob. when u pick it back up. u are a god
i lost it at "Charlie Ppputh!" at the end, when you add a comedic effect to your videos, it just makes for a great experience.
I'll be honest, not familiar with the Weekend. Now I have to look into that to see if I agree...

I'm a metalhead mostly, some funk but I have very little respect for pop musicians, this song is officially the first pop song I downloaded
nice video mike!
Is it weird that the more i watch his videos the more i find mike really attractive...
Become The Knight Bruce Dickinson all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!
And he produce it. That's amazing for a pop musician.
what's your stand point on electronica? imo, most is the same of as pop for me, but artists like Jack Garratt can put together some good harmonics and loops.
check out BTS songs like Young forever, Tomorrow, Whalien 52, Butterfly, and No More Dream
If you play the verse bass line of Can’t Stop by RHCP over this song it actually works
5:15 she forgot her meds.
The high pitched voice may be a bit repulsive, but he pulls it off live. That’s talent
You should check out FrogLeapStudios. He does metal covers of popular, mostly pop, songs. You could headbang to an Adele song.
This song is goona be billion viewer soon already cross 800 million go Charlie
What I think Charlie Puth needs to do is something similar to Freddie Mercury where falsetto can be a signature of his but he can't make it every single note. I wanna hear what is normal voice sounds like
I really like this song, and also really like Gojira, Impending Doom, Cattle Decapitation and Within Destruction. I like hip hop too, and i'm proud of me but nobody cares haha jokes on me
This song with another singer, i´d dig
I Feel like a reaction to fabuless by stone sour would be appropriate since that just got out.... pretty Please
Possibly
do a metal cover of this song it could be interesting
Why does youtube show me this video, when I'm searching for 'Blink 182 on your channel? oO But ok... had fun anyway ;)
Lol I have no idea......but thanks for the good vibes \m/
hey mike im new and i love your videos. especially the reactions..i was hoping you can react to teens react to Marilyn Manson
I didn’t really care for the song too much, but there’s no denying that fuckin Bass was kickin
I agree with you, except that I wish his enunciation were better! You can understand the words, but they sound slightly slurred to me.
He has whiskey in every video. It very surprising that he actually sat it down.
Hey I would really enjoy seeing you react to photograph by ed Sheeran, keep rocking.
I think in song they used to date he broke up up with her because he realized she was shallow that's where the chorus comes in she's whining he broke up with me for no reason he is a piece of s*** meanwhile he wanted more out of the relationship than she was willing to give that's why during the temper tantrum scene he didn't react you just want attention you don't want my heart got me thinking back to When You Were Mine... my gym please this song to death it's actually a really good Break Up Song if you think about it
Just found out that Charlie is a Berklee graduate. Made me have more respect for him
React to Chateau Lobby by Father John Misty. Solid song with cool lyrics
He does this kind of songs alone haha
2:24 lol😂😂
2:22 Nice James Hetfield impression
React to Harry Style’s solo stuff, specifically Sign of the Times
review your line 6 board in the background
that bass man
I really like this Charlie guy... It's fresh air
bro I'm pretty new but what are you drinking in like every video? haha you look badass
Whiskey on the rocks.
literally never heard of him ahaha.
Mike, your thoughts on the Twenty One Pilots?
I didn't know who Charlie Puth was before this video
Do you know how hard it is for a dude to go high pitched? It takes a lot of effort, he is using his pipes, just in a different style
