Me after watching a video om how to simplify a guitar rig:
1. I see a guitar, an amp and some pedals in the video
2. I lust for them, then buy them after a while
3. I don’t sell the stuff I already have
Hi John, can you do a video where you walk through all the process of creating those beautiful music pieces including the drums and the software you use?
Thanks
Ron.

I love that kind shuffle with a double back beat! Nice work!
I absolutely love the blues driver and blues breaker, my two favorite drives
Great summary of those pedals… thanks. I’m down to my last two (DL4 and PlimSoul) which were listed recently on Reverb. The digital live performance tone journey is finally satisfying with an FM3 and FR-12, but plan to keep one tube amp (Mesa 50w Express II) for now… a reference.
What are you playing the FM3 through on stage, if you’re using it Live?
Goddamn man, your playing is always so tasty and fluid.
Awesomeness! Man! Love the playing on this one John! Thanks for posting! ❤❤❤
I'm a late to the "Pedal Party", currently deep into trying all kinds of different Overdrives and FUZZ pedals. Some so called "Boutique", some "Affordable". No, plans on stopping anytime soon as long as my discretionary income allows. I'm fully enjoying the journey and is a constant inspiration nightly trying new ones at different settings along with others. Maybe one day I'll get to the point where some others are in their Journey and downsize to just a few pedals. But for now, it's GAME ON! Cheers John 🙏🏼
I'll help you skip ahead, get a ram's head and/or vintage green sovtek big muff, best fuzzbox out there...also, a 90s deluxe memory man is the best non-tape analog delay...not cheap these days, but might save money spent trying out lesser pedals
Look at Reeves
Thanks, I'll check them out@@jasondorsey7110
Oh I Love Markus and Izzy's creations, I have several of theirs already. Top Notch stuff.@@skipneumann1
Man seeing the price of some of the pedals I had on my big board I definitely regret selling them!
But hey when I first replaced all my mod/delay/reverb with the m13 then eventually going straight up helix, there’s no doubt it was the right move for me and my workflow.
Great video again John.
My pedals journey has taken me down a few paths. In terms of drives and dynamics pedals, things have been changing for me in the last 2 years.
First, the newest thing for me is my acquisition and use of my Helix floor last summer. For the music I play with my band, I've used amps coupled with snapshots to vary drive, EQ and volume a lot more than actual pedals (real of Helix blocks). When I do use a drive, usually for edge of breakup to crunch, I find I gravitate to the Zen Drive model (Dhyana Drive). Almost all of my presets are two amps presets (a clean amp and a gain one). The one new thing for me is that I got a Wampler Mini Ego compressor I put before the Helix (along with a Polytune Mini). THe comp is always on and is there because it fatten's up the tone and gives my Strat more sustain. It improves the feel for me too and none of the built-in compressor gave me the same thing. The Deluxe is great in the Helix but the Ego just has something more.
Now for my analog rig, the constant for the past 5 years has been the full size Ego comp. 2-3 years ago, the HX FX replaced the Boss MS-3 I was using before for everything other than drive and comp (modulation, delay, reverbs and special effects like harmonizing, etc. In both rigs I have the Boss SY-1 synth pedal. Again, nothing in the HX/Helix does that job like that.
Now as for drives, for years I played through a JHS The AT (Andy Timmons signature, the original version). In 2021, I acquired my main tube head to this day which is the Revv Dynamis 7-40 and that amp's Red channel became my primary source of gain tones for a while. At some point I wanted a bit more gain and had decided to use that amp as a pedal platform (it's clean "Blue" channel is the best pedal platform base I have ever used. So I got two Revv pedals in the G4 (high gain) and G2 (mid gain). Both have full 3 band EQs and "aggression/dynamics" switches. Amazing pedals that are still on my main board alongside the Ego comp. Recently taken off that board was the Wampler Tumnus Deluxe. I now prefer pushing the amp or the G2 with something in the Tube Screamer lineage from the HX FX (the mid hump is at a lower frequency in Tube Screamer type pedals where Klon types have it quite a bit higher. I'm now realizing I prefer the former or a clean boost and I really never gelled with the actual drive tone of the Klon type pedals.
Somewhere in there I also got and tried the Wampler Pinnacle Deluxe but I never got a tone I liked out of that. Way too hard to tweak, especially the treble. A micro turn will get it from too dark to take your head off bright from barely moving the knob. Big disappointment for me that one. Especially after the JHS which sounded very smooth and balanced and much more like what I consider "Marshally" which is what I wanted. But the on/off switch is broken on it and the pedal is intermittent... for a "boutique" builder I was quite disappointed. Especially since it lived in one of the loops in my MS-3 when I was using it a lot so I really didn't use the on/off switch on the pedal very often. The tone is killer though.
So that's where I'm at now too and have a couple pedals to sell ;) Here I'm sparing you all the earlier part of my journey (Boss DS-1 then HM-1, Rockman Sustainor, Marshall ValveState combo amp) through the 80s and 90s... ;) I still have the Rockman I need to sell as well. That one will need a recap job though... ;)
Is this available in hardback?
My collection is super small. Pedals I bought and use and love....
Diamond Compressor -- The newer one with the mids control. I had the old one forever. Everything sounds better when it's on.
V1 Timmy -- I've had it since 2008, I think. Incredible as a booster/shaper/low gain box.
Paul Cochrane Mini Bone -- It's a clone. Had an original and sold it when prices went nuts. Just such a fun harmonic little thing.
1981 DRV -- I love it. It's great for big thick gain, but really incredible with the gain almost all the way down, too.
Strymon El Capistan -- It's a V1 ... but it's pretty much perfect.
Strymon Flint -- Also V1. I've thought about V2 for MIDI, but it's probably my favorite pedal of all time.
All into an HX Stomp w/ a DMC Micro Pro for MIDI. Also have a Dunlop DVP4X for volume or expression. Bought that, too. It's good for what it is.
The Rat is quickly growing on me. I had no idea how versatile of a pedal it was.
To me...the most versatile od/dist pedal. And with LOTS of character.
My favourite one.
Recently, i took out everything and replace it with Rat. Funny to go back after trying all the fancy popula stuff. Is it me or this RAT boy does pretty much all OD/distortion one can ever
ask .
love your channel and your playing!
there's a thing on your hat
tis a mic
It looks like he shoplifted it and couldn’t get the security tag off.
Baby Phone?😊
Preferable to a hat on his thing….
john Nathan Sulek
I had a ton of overdrives/distortions for recording direct into my digital machine. Now I've invested in an Iridium, most of them are obsolete for the classic/indie rock tones I require. All except the Blues Driver and, very occasionally, a tubescreamer for the odd lead/mid boost
The Shredmaster pretty much covers all the BluesBreaker tones, with the option of a more scooped eq and more gain, if you want. Great vid as always, John!
As a boost for solos I have used a full tone octafuzz v1 for years.. not as a fuzz.. maybe use the octave once in a set.. never found anything to replace or better.. but Fulltone are reissuing / relaunching aparently.. you might dig .. really articulates front of note
Sold all my pedals and helix floor. I am settling down with HX effect and HX stomp XL, using the XL for amps and rest of the effects from HX effects.
Interesting. I’ve had the same setup with the hx effects and the stomp, but that was only because I already owned the effects when the stomp was released. Curious why you ditched the floor for that setup, since the DSP is the same between both options, and the floor would be easier to set up.
@@danielbell4007 sold it as i needed money at that time. Life thing. Now it costs too much here in Nepal
Hi John. Maybe slightly off-topic, but when I take a look info the future, I hope you'll get your hands onto the "Bluguitar AmpX" (whenever it'll be released....). After seeing a lot of your Video´s here I feel like you were the person this unit is really made for. Formfactor, usability, options, the approach of getting/creating a tone...and - the most important - the sound should really fit to your needs, as far as I understood what you are looking for. I have followed Thomas Blug for a good number of years now, and I found that all of his products (he has developed a lot of gear i.e. for Hughes & Kettner) "make sense" (if that makes sense...) in a musical way AND in a practical way. Thomas´ has the advantage of being not only a brilliant guitar player, but also being fantastic electronic engineer. Sort of a "Dr. Jeckyll/Mr. Hyde-Thing", but in a good way. I really don´t know which part is more present, because he really digs deep into both worlds. Lucky him... Anyway, as I said, this post is a bit off-topic, sorry if it´s to weird. Thumbs up for this Video. GREAT PLAYING, as usual. Always great fun watching your Clips.
I love my original BUSS, but I love my 5 Watt BUSS even more. David and Keith crushed it with that one.
Same tastes here except for the blues driver that has been in his box for months. Maybe I should try it again.
so nice to see people talks about pedals so passionate in era of amp sims and all digital ...its really amazing how all of these have some usage as low gain devices, especially Ratt which I never quite managed to like because of that notorious ugly kinda fuzzy harsh character ... cool video
The rat really spans the gap between overdrives and fuzzboxes
Excellent comparison between drive pedals: for me it's the Boss Blues Driver. And surprised by the sound of the RAT, which I never owned!
Part of the reason is that I switched to modeling, but yeah...I've gone down to very few pedals, even inside the Fractal. The only real pedals I own are so that I can keep a pretty minimal pedalboard and be able to play with something like "my" tone into a halfway-suitable amp.
I had an original Rat that I sold, because i got the Wampler Ratsbane, which is tiny, and sounds great and has more options! It has a switch that adds more mids, so as you are a Strat player, it could be interesting to try.
My cheap Joyo, Donner and others are bit noisy and maybe need upgrading for that reason but they sound pretty good once you get a decent gate on there. Will probably keep a few and flog the rest as they need lovin too lol.
Great video! Would love to see you review a quilter aviator cub. It’s a quite a versatile amp.
A bit of Tears for Fears in that cool intro! Nice.
I used to have the Royal Overdrive. It didn't work for me. Maybe too much interaction between the knobs? I sold it to someone that's still happy with it, I bought some other stuff, like a Blues Driver....😄
I wouldn’t call myself a fan of this channel but you always have something interesting to say so I keep clicking haha
At the moment I have my HX Stomp, a BD-2, a BB Comp, the Vertex SSS(srv), and a min wah/expression by Hotone on my board. I’ve got an old Boss Octave pedal and a Circle looper for messing around with during practice sessions. The main pedal that I rarely seem to use is a Blackstar dual overdrive with a valve in it. I like some things it can do but somehow I rarely reach for it, not sure why? That might go soon. Worst pedals I bought were a landlord looper that lasted 5 minutes and a landlord analogue delay which is terrible compared to the Stomp, but hey, they were about £30 each so what did I expect. I’d like a Guv’nor and a Bluesbreaker but if I’m honest I don’t need either so unlikely to happen - or is it?
The holdsworth boost is a tc electronics line booster/drive but with the ability to to have the drive and boost at the same time ( with the tc it’s either). I’ve got both. The tc is better for a Holdsworth sound. Check out the peppers pedals dirty tree.
I just sold almost all my pedals for a helix floor, only to return it..
now I’m back on the hunt for pedals again 😅
It's funny, I've got a vid coming out next week, why I ditched the King of Tone in favour of the Bluesbreaker, the only draw back for me is the size but I made it work!
It's been a thing for me too where the "fixes" that some of the boutique modding folks are things that either I'm too deaf to hear or....Yeh maybe I'm deaf? But the Bluesbreaker reissue is just fantastic, I think?
@@johnnathancordy I mean, the main fix for the bluesbreaker is the headroom I guess, but I was using it at unity gain anyway, same with the KOT. We are all too quick to get carried away with the boutique stuff, totally guilty of that myself, I’m trying to strip it back a bit and just use my (admittedly pretty buggered) ears.
Yes Prince mainly used just regular Boss pedals. Nothing fancy.
Particularly good grooving today
I sold a bunch of pedals... spent the mo ey on crap, now no money, no pedals, dont sell your pedals unless you NEED the money.
😂
The inverse law of “flipping” haha 😂
What i know is that i have too many pedals, and need to get to work listing them for sale. I’m at the point where i just need 1 good version of each pedal type i like to use, and all the rest can go to a new home - but why to i keep putting off selling them? that is the question…
Hi John, have you ever tried a zen drive? I bought the dude and a couple of other d style pedals to try but my zen remains on my board and I moved them on.
Please other question hhh i love my boss od1 and the playing and the sound of gary moore can i have low gain of gary moore bluesbreaker from blues driver
Thanks to truefire to make us see beautiful playing and humble beautuful man .please i have question what is the best sire lary carlton les paul or tokai mij ls 136 cost 1000euro that what i can have
Especially love your dogs as well. ha ha!
I'm looking for an Allan Holdsworth overdrive for years, now. Sometimes I found one on the market but the price it's way too high for me.
What about your Chase Bliss pedals???
Boss BD2 never leaves my board!
I just love 12/8...like a train....just swings ....I'm a sucker for that rhythm ...stop that immediately!
What happened to the walrus audio 385 mkII, I bought one because of your video and absolutely love it!
I've still got it but I didn't count it as it was a paid demo if that makes sense - I want to try that on my live board though as I find dual drives really useful!
Why is the H90 in the same camp as the HX Stomp? Didn’t realize you still had one. I’d love to see some more H90 content from you, as a current user.
I think my favourite was the DS-9.
Bd2 keeley mod I like. It’s a tad quieter. And gain is smoother.
My pedal collection is huge after 40ys I have a ds1, an ocd ,a me50 from 2001 a ts7, but I just bought a QC 😂
I've sold my last pedal, I'm about to sell my spring reverb tank. Now I'm waffling about selling my remaining amps and cabs.
It’s strange, but out of all the pedals I have owned, I have never had a RAT or a Fuzz Face. Tried them out, during my misspent youth, but didn’t click with either. Perhaps I should give them another go, even if it means using the RAT just as a boost.
Two of the top three fuzz pedals 😳
Raise the Dead is the only one that sounded different to me in the intro mix. SD9 had some distinctiveness, but not a ton.
You could pair this collection down more I reckon. A few of them sounded very similar
I plan on holding onto most of my pedals until they become rare and fashionable…just kidding. I’ll be dead before that happens.
Most pedals I own I just can’t part with due to an unreasonable emotional attachment
Not surprising John gets great sounds out of a carrot if he plugs into it. Did I hear him say a Tubedriver is not currently HIS FLAVOR??? He almost always in his Modellers/ Helix and Fractal has a 808ts in his driver section, if not that a Timmy for sure. See JOHN we actually do watch thru your videos. MICK is holding that pedal HOSTAGE til you come on his SHOW, DO IT!!!! We wanna See it. And PLAY that gibson 345 and show mick the Screaming Legato boy on the vintage Semi Hollow with the magical sounds. What a Great show that Will be!!!! The K line Salesman on that Pedal Show.
review the new zoom pedals
Came here looking for a cure for my GAS, now I want to buy a Rat.
Thanks a lot.
Can I recommend not selling the pedals in your car. I'm not sure the HX stomp the can replace them in this case.
Great to hear the Boss BD-2 (the first generation) IMHO it's the MOST missing drive in Helix :)
And another GREAT video from you BTW :)
Could be cool with some sort of polling video on "What's left to miss on the current Helix" or "What would make you buy a new Super Helix if/when it comes out".
Mine are really pretty basic:
1 - The BD-2 almost had me jump to Cortex, but then came the Emsley amp and new cabinets and that became my main amp.
2 - An overhaul of the looper. I've ended up buying a Boss looper just for the easier controls of it and the length of the loops.
3 - Bluetooth/Wifi support
4- Some sort of "freeze blocks" where you could freeze say the amp, cab, drive blocks but change preset for different delay mod and reverb blocks. This would give a way more consistent sound but still have all the possiblities of a preset change. Right now the scenes can do some of it, but i always ends up having the same tremolo, chorus, delays and reverbs, and using all sorts of workarounds, instead of chosing the right chorus/delay/reverb for the tune.
Again thanks a lot for all your great guitarplaying, and all you great TH-cam stuff, it's honest not to polished and such a joy.
You sold The Dude??!!! wow
That started out with some Tears for Fears vibe.
JB-2 is my favorite drive pedal.
I love how many ways you can set it up with the single large (hard to miss) footswitch.
To perform I use a modeling rig with midi and blah blah blah, but when I’m just going to a jam I take the JB-2 and a DD-8 on a tiny board and I’ve got everything I need.
Day 11 of asking for ALL the backing tracks to be uploaded to Patreon. I almost didn’t ask for these but I NEED them ALL!
All i see is overdrive pedals. Where are delays, choruses, wah, etc. ???
I have way too may pedals I must admit.
Not Phil 😂😂
...Hey..... Where's your guitar tech baby girl??😄
do you regret it yet?
one of life's regrets.... selling your gear !!!! lol
I thought that was good.
"not Phil" Lol. No it didn't.
Klon- don’t be a moron like me and sell it for $600 before it blew up- my biggest gear regret
But if you like that sound. Archer Jeff mod is awesome
Before even watching...less well sorted pedals is more...
Don't they all sound alike and deffo. sound like John Nathan Cordy?😀
Good. If you own a competent modeler, pedals are stupid and old fashioned.
