According to Wikipedia, ""Lily the Pink" is a 1968 song released by the UK comedy group the Scaffold. It is a modernisation of an older folk song titled "The Ballad of Lydia Pinkham". The lyrics celebrate the "medicinal compound" invented by Lily the Pink, and, in each verse, chronicle some extraordinary cure it has effected."

I love this. It's strange, dark melodrama; almost a parody of itself.

These dramatizations were often "over the top" (as radio soap operas of the day were), to wring the maximum emotions out of the women who listened to them...the better to get them in the "right frame of mind" for the Lydia Pinkham "pitches".

"MISTER GOOD" was a daily syndicated radio series sponsored by Lydia E. Pinkham Medicine Company during the 1940's, dramatizing stories concerning "moral issues" in people's lives (with subtle ads for Lydia Pinkham's tablets, a woman's version of "Geritol"). Almost the entire series is preserved on transcription discs [like this one] at Radcliffe College, with other Lydia Pinkham history, and examples of how the product was marketed, from the early 1900's through 1968.

Back in 1956, my dad, mom and older brother were in a diner and a reporter approached them and did a "man on the street" interview, We had this interview on record and that record also played from the inside. *BIG SIGH* Unfortunately, I lost that record. I want to call the station and see if they happen to have that recording still as that would be my only way to have my mom and dad's voice.

Did ya notice that this record plays from the inside out. For years broadcast transcriptions were recorded vertically (up and down) in the groove to avoid hearing surface scratches. Broadcast pickup cartridges required to be switched from vertical cuts to lateral cuts in order to hear them.

The grooves of these records are cut from the inner part of the disc out and were used in radio broadcasts. They used linear tracking and a special needle. By cutting the grooves from inward out it offered better fidelity and fit the AM frequency better. Also it gave more time per side of the record.

I notice that the record is one you start from the inside and the grooves play the needle out.

Well, I learned something new. I used to have a couple of churchy-type 16 inch discs and they played at 16. I guess mine were the odd ones.

Is the needle moving from the inside out? That is unusual.

    • @progressivemetalfan

Steve, you are correct. Some of the transcription records from those times ran from the inside to the outside.
