    Vodalian War Machine is kind of the first vehicle. Tapping creatures to allow it to attack

    • @bluedestiny2710
      @bluedestiny2710 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yup... and then much later, a closer version of the vehicle mechanic called "Hallow Warrior" would be printed in Prophecy (4 mana, 4/4, Hallow Warrior cannot attack or block unless you tap a creature). The biggest difference is that Hallow Warrior is a creature... so it WILL blow up against board wipes.

    In the Magic video game Shandalar, the blue colored boss fights start with a Leviathan, then put all their resources into trying to untap and attack with it. Needless to say, it ends up being a great advantage for you in the long run, especially if you get an unsummon or something

    • @SomeGuy712x
      @SomeGuy712x ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yeah, I've had hilarious moments with the enemy's Leviathans in Shandalar. It's usually not too difficult to draw some sort of answer to it (Swords to Plowshares, Unsummon, Terror, etc.) before it's able to attack on turn 4, and the opponent wastes all their Islands untapping and trying to attack with the thing, so they won't be casting much else.

      The deck i ran was usually a Black Red deck revolving around resource denial (i.e Mindtwist, Sink Hole etc) and cards like Erg Raiders, Black Knights, Sedge Trolls and Hypnotic Specters finished the fight (i usually curve out at 3 mana... i only have 2 sengirs)
      When i fight the blue wizard... i just let him keep Levi... since he wont have any way to untap it amidst all those cards to drain his stuff

    Vodalian War Machine is actually super secret tech in Merfolk decks, running the Morningtide/Shadowmoor block Merfolk that do things when they or other Merfolk are tapped/untapped.

    Shyft is one of those early cards that were designed to interact with/avoid circles of protection, protection from (color), and color hosing spells (Terror was a common removal spell back then) which were a staple in the early days of casual MtG.

    Fun fact: Elder Spawn is the ONLY spawn in MTG. However, there are several other creatures named [cardname Spawn] so it's beyond my mind why these aren't spawns as well, since the creature type exist and is used...

    • @willowdelosrios4326
      @willowdelosrios4326 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reason for this is that creature types used to be both a lot more specific and a lot less mechanically significant. This is why Jamuraan Lion had the Lion creature type rather than the Cat creature type or the the Ali from Cairo card has the creature type Ali from Cairo. Later on, it was decided to simplify creature types more, so that Lions and Tigers are both cats, and so on. Furthermore, spawn is sort of a terrible creature type, since spawn literally means offspring, so Spawn of Thraxes means something like “child/offspring of Thraxes”, probably implying it’s related to a larger dragon named Thraxes, while Aboleth Spawn is a young Aboleth, and has nothing in common with Spawn of Thraxes. Making creatures with Spawn in their name have the Spawn creature type would be like saying Lord of Extinction and Lord of the Pit should both have the the Lord creature type.

    • @hermodnitter3902
      @hermodnitter3902 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@willowdelosrios4326 yeah, I know all this about old creature types and the grand creature type update. The question is why they didn't errata this specific one. Why keep the type spawn when there is only one creature, that could easily get another type.

      @@democrrrracymanifest I also had a deck like that on 90s and he's not that bad at that time. Of course you have downsides, specially sacrifice islands to attack, but it was a finisher, you could do 1-2 attacks with trample. Blue creatures used to be really weak at the first editions, so I don't consider "big mouth" so bad as others presented at the video

  • @LlywellynOBrien
    @LlywellynOBrien ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The strangest thing about the war machine is how poor its attack is. Like, even on flavour grounds shouldn't it be stronger than the creatures piloting it?

  • @bluedestiny2710
    @bluedestiny2710 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Funny story with Cephalid Snitch: In limited, I ran it out of desperation... and my opponent ignored it for a while because I kept dropping bigger threats... by the time he noticed, the Snitch already knocked his life points 8 points XD he eventually got rid of it, but the little Cephalid that could really tried his best and actually contributed a lot in the win (I closed out the game with my 2nd rare: Laquatus' Champion)
    Anyway, I am quite surprised that Giant Shark and Marjhan avoided this list... actually... ANY creature that had that "land home" mechanic avoided this list is a shocker. For the young ones who didn't live in the middle ages: "Land Home" is a defunct keyword where the creature cannot attack unless the opponent controls a specific land, and the creature will be sacrificed if you do not control that land.
    Example: Giant Shark: U5, 4/4, Island Home (if you control no islands, sacrifice this creature. If your opponent does not control an island, this creature cannot attack them). If Giant Shark enters combat with a creature that already taken damage this turn, it gets +2/+0 and Trample until end of turn
    Marjhan: UU5, 8/8, Island Home. Marjhan enters the battlefield tapped and does not untap as normal during your untap step. UU: sacrifice a creature: Untap Marjhan. Play this ability only during your upkeep. UU: Marjhan gets -1/-0 until end of turn: Marjhan deals 1 damage to target attacking creature without flying
    So yea... im pretty shocked these 2 avoided the bottom 10 O.O

    • @thedancingpikachu
      @thedancingpikachu ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aside from island home those two seem to have narrow but actual upside from the second abilities you mentioned. Great Shark doesn't hurt you for coming down, and Marjhan has a ping ability for defense. Together the two actually make a decent defense, especially when creatures were a lot worse.

      Egotist, while isnt that good, was in an environment where its absurdly high CMC actually counts. There were several spells and effects that check your permanent with highest CMC and this card is a decent choice since you can sneak it in pretty early. After flipping it from being a Grey Ogre, your spells would be counting 8 for its effects (i.e Torrent of Fire deals X damage to any target, where X is the highest CMC among permanents you control)

  • @chrisn676

    The Saprazzan Outrigger is actually the basis for the very first deck I EVER designed, almost 20 years ago: it exploited ETB effects, specifically the red enchantment Furious Assault (better known as the Strictly Worse Impact Tremors), to stall the board and gradually whittle down the opponent's Life. ...and, even though it was my very first deck EVER, I recognized that the Outrigger was crap (for the reasons you identified) and replaced it with Shrieking Drake and Imaginary Pet. It was a great inspiration; it's a terrible card.

  • @RiptornRory
    @RiptornRory ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This brings me back to when I first starting playing and how HORRIBLE my blue deck was that ran only Leviathan and Polar Kraken as wincons. Which looking back, I don't blame anyone but myself for losing every single game I played with that deck. Didn't help it was usually multiplayer games so playing a control deck was the shortest path to defeat.

    • @bluedestiny2710
      @bluedestiny2710 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dont worry... im on the same mindset as you. Big numbers is just attractive to kids O.O
      Also... to give Polar Kraken some credit, it's WAY easier to use compared to Leviathan. There ARE scenarios where you would only lose 3 lands and win the game ... as opposed to Leviathan which would cost at least 8 on its own. Kraken was THE biggest creature until Vision's Phyrexian Marauder was printed... and was still an ok choice for reanimators looking to close out a game ASAP (tried it with Animate Dead as early as turn 3.. I usually get to swing in at least once before that Dark Banishing would take it out)

    Wow. That Svyelunite Priest is terrible 😂 if your opponent does have instant speed removal, the ability is useless because they'll cast it in response to your activated ability. If they don't have instant speed removal, the ability is irrelevant.
    How did the devs miss the fact the timing restriction is so counterintuitive, it makes it literally useless. There are zero scenarios it actually works 😂

      All those "Destroy target creatures if they taken damage this turn" spells.

    Surprised Ovinomancer didn't make the list though I guess it at least tries to do something. Removing a single creature a turn after casting it and after bouncing 3 of your own lands, only to have Ovinomancer return to hand seems hilarously overcosted.

    • @bluedestiny2710
      @bluedestiny2710 ปีที่แล้ว

      If i were to just guess: that thing was Blue's only creature that can get rid of an opponent's creature with little questions asked at the time. Yea its slow... but it gets the job done. Turning an opponent's 6/5 Spirit of the Night into a 0/1 sheep is still something relevant
      But it IS bad tho...
      Also..
      Sheep token!
      Edit: you can actually make this card work with a global haste card (i.e Anger). Play the Ovinomancer, activate effect, bounce it to hand, then decline to pay the ETB cost. It just becomes a bad sorcery for 3 to destroy anything and create a sheep token. If you have Alluren, you can make this an instant, 0 cost removal spell. Convoluted, sure... but it can work

    Sarpazzan Outrigger does not deserver to be on a 'worst card list'. I played it in Masques Limited, and it was actually really good. Unlike the other creatures tied in #1, The outrigger is aggressively costed and actually kills stuff in combat (the ability works different from the other two cards). Masques block was so bad that you had to consider: would you want to draw a 5/5 for 4 each turn? In most cases, that's better than every other card in blue you could draw in masques block. The outrigger owned the ground, while you flew over with your airships.

    Yes, it's bad, but it's effectively a vanilla 2 mana 1/2 which is not bad enough to put on a 'worst' list. Something like Balduvian Conjurer or Cloud Skate, or Coastal Drake, or Coral Fighters, or Homarid Shaman, or Merfolk Seer are infinitely worse cards

    I expected polar kraken to be on this list but... wuff, some of these cards are just worse than that somehow LOL

    Wouldn't Vodalian War Machine be decent while blocking? Think of it as a 0/4 Wall that can get +2/+1 with every Merfolk tapped - not such a bad cost back then
    Still bad, but nowhere near as bad as the others...

    I'm surprised that scornful egotistical didn't make the list. An 8 mana 1/ 1 is pretty bad.

      It’s also a 3 mana 2/2.

      I'd rather have a 2 mana 1/2 that has a tiny bit of upside than a 3 mana 2/2 whi is only good at pretending to be something good. Lol.

      Egotist is actually a combo card. You're not supposed to ever cast it for its mana cost. Its failcase is being a 3 mana 2/2, which is pretty awful nowadays but was a decent if unimpressive body back in the day. But its true purpose is to be combined with cards that care about mana cost, of which the set it came in had a few. So it's basically a modal card, either a combo piece or a 3 mana 2/2 blocker if you happen to draw it when you can't take advantage of its true purpose.
      I dunno if it ever saw competitive play anywhere, but even if the Egotist was *just* a 3 mana 2/2 with no other upside, I don't think it would even make this list

    • @roydickel9183
      @roydickel9183 ปีที่แล้ว

      It appeared in a set were casting cost mattered so it had a narrow use case. So egotistical wasn't always awful (don't get me wrong it was never good) so doesn't make the lists

    "Knowing your opponent's hand isnot very good" have you ever played magic? Yes the card is bad but that kind if effect is extremely powerful

    • @NizzahonMagic
      @NizzahonMagic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, I've never played Magic. You got me.
      The effect is powerful when attached to a real card worth of value. (See: Thoughtseize or Gitaxian Probe). It has never been powerful when that's the only effect you get. In the cae of the Inspector, you have a highly conditional version of the effect attached to an understatted creature. My point is that the upside on the card is very, very small -- and it is.

    Shift+coalition victory plus two triones= win. That doesn't make shyft good but I think it should arguably keep it of the list since it can at least make some fun commander decks if coalition Victory wasn't banned.
