  • Russia's military says it has begun tactical nuclear weapons drills near Ukraine.
The exercises are taking place in Russia's Southern Military District which, according to the Kremlin, includes parts of Ukraine under occupation.
Moscow says the drills are in response to threats from some Western officials. It's the first time Russia has publicly announced drills that involve tactical nuclear weapons while its strategic nuclear forces regularly hold exercises.
For more on this, we talk to Katarzyna Zysk. She is professor of International Relations and Contemporary History at the Norwegian Institute for Defense Studies.
And we talk to Mark Cancian. He's a retired Colonel in the US Marine Corps, and a senior Adviser with the International Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

China is loving this. Putin attacks/weakens Western resources while completely demolishing Russia's economy, future, and with nukes world support. In the end China takes back its Northern Territories Russia temporarily stole and annexed from China. Russia has no remaining friends or allies willing to counter China. Both China and US rational enough to realize the madness. World goes back to a cold war status of 'The West' vs 'China sphere'
China now has its own vast land-path oil supply, eliminated its current achilles heel of having mostly sea based oil.

So there's no certainty that Russia wouldn't use nukes if their warnings are ignored because Russia sees this war as existential and is willing to escalate as possible.

China is a big country because China culture is more tolerant than other countries. Do you know why China can occupy a big size of land in Asia equal to whole Europe and has so many different people to live peacefully? On the other hand, Europe has similar land size as China but Europe was divided to a few dozens countries which fight frequently among themselves.
The reason is Europe culture is not tolerant as China. For example If there is food they do not like, other people are not allowed to eat this food as well. One specific example: some minorities in China (about 1% to 2% of China’s population) near Vietnam and Korea eat dog. So some people in Vietnam and Korea eat dog as well. It is some people’s culture in Asia. China as such a big country is more tolerant to the different culture from different races and group of people. That is why different races of people in China get along and become one country.
In Europe there is no tolerance. They discriminate China because 1-2% of China’s people eat dog. The difference also make Europe hostile towards each other. That is why world wars all start from Europe.

50 Kilotons may not wipe Berlin off the map, but it is a really bad decade for a whole lot of towns in Europe. What makes them tactical isn't the yield so much as the mechanism of detonation such that the weapons are very light (comparatively) and therefore deliverable by different means (smaller rockets, glide bombs etc...)

Russia and China together with the other nuclear powers (US, UK and France) gave security assurances to Ukraine in 1994 in return for Ukraine surrendering their nuclear weapons. The main motivation was to limit the spread of nuclear weapons. China has numerous technologically advanced neighbours (Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea, Philipines, Vietnam etc) which could easily develop nuclear weapons for deterrence if they felt threatened by nuclear weapons. For this reason, China seems very unlikely to support unilateral use of nuclear weapons by Russia.

Getting the poorly-informed all worked up over nuclear weapons may drive viewership, but it hardly constitutes a public service. Russia is not on the verge of using nuclear weapons. Russia hasn’t proposed a ceasefire, much less terms for a peace treaty. Using nuclear weapons without having some sort of proposal on the table invites a reply in kind; i.e., a US warhead employed against a suitable target on Ukrainian soil. At the very least, we should expect a massive USAF operation in response against Russian targets in Ukraine if for no other reason than to discourage Russia from believing that use of nukes won’t get a reaction of equal or greater significance. That’s not what Russia is after. If Russia intends to intimidate Ukraine and the West into dancing to the Russian tune, Russia can hardly expect any dancing until the song is selected, the band hired, and the instruments tuned for play. There not being a song, a band, or a request for dance, Russia isn’t about to initiate nuclear warfare just for the sake of shocking Ukraine and the West. There’s too much that can go wrong at a time when Russia is not clearly losing the war.
