It would be great, but I doubt it will happen. They probably don’t view it as making a big enough impact to sales to justify the effort. That’s what you get with a duopoly.
Damn! This 100% makes me wanna get a 4iiii's. They already got a pretty good track record on power meter functionality. This is just such a good topping on the cake!
I feel like I need to upgrade my powermeter now. This technology embedded into a head unit would serve as more than a tracker if the bike, or device is stolen. Head units, even with as large as they have been come, could easily get misplaced. But even more, they can be knocked off a bike in the event of a hard bump or a crash. Having the ability to go back and find your head unit after a spectacular decent would be awesome. I guess the 4iii $30 upgrade won’t work for my plain Precision PM.
Nice review. I saw 4iiii's announcement in email but you've done a nice job of running through the practicals and techincals. 🙂 When I saw the fee to upgrade what has to be firmware, I kinda waved it off but now that I understand the need (silly though it might be) to be a physical process, I can't complain much about $30 to get this great feature (too bad it means losing the crank for a couple of weeks)
I have seen recently that the upgrade to Precision 3+ is available in the UK now too. Thinking of sending my crank off to them in the next few weeks to see how the process all works...
There is the Knog Scout which mounts under the bottle cage and also has a built in alarm and alert that besides Find my function also has a movement sensor and will alert you to your iPhone and Apple Watch if your bike moves while you are in range (about 30 metres) - for example you’re in the cafe ordering a coffee and your bike is just outside out of view and someone touches it.
Hi Shane. Just bought the 4iiii dual 3+ Power pro. The left crank won’t connect to my IPhone find me. Removed the battery 3x and it blinks red. Any suggestions?
@@gplama thanks. I’ve sent it through already, just thought you might’ve come across this problem as I’ve read a few people with this issue. Great videos and info on products. Always a pleasure to watch 👍
Did you use the 105 fc-r7000 version of this product? It appears there are several versions, and the model number seen in the video appears to be a $500 version of the product. Don't want to buy the wrong one! Thanks. ❤
Is this just a software upgrade - or is it actually baked into the precision 3? Can you just turn the feature on by open/closing the battery compartment 3 times - eg no need to send this back to 4iiii? The cost to send back the crank from places like Australia is massive eg $70US - why can't we get this turned on locally?
Thanks @@gplama The return (to 4iiii as detailed) is to have a number etched into the unit. Etching doesn't turn on the 'find my' operation, as its a physical action, whereas the operation of the 'find my' is more likely just software. I want to know whether the 'etching' is all 4iiii does - or whether they change/upgrade the firmware and/or chipset of the device. Is the full operation already built into the existing device?
So what is the protocol (in Australia) if it does infact get stolen? Say you can see the exact house it's at - what are the next steps to getting your bike back?
@@gplama Sorry, was more curious if the police would actually care. Could you then rock up to someones house with the police, and what's the process? Find My is possible on a Garmin. If they license the technology and get certified by Apple. I wouldn’t hold my breath with Google. As they’re a direct competitor with Android.
@@iMadrid11 sorry what do you mean they are a direct competitor. To Garmin? I'd say apple is more of a competitor to Garmin than Google. Google find my is the same concept as apple find my. In fact apple and Google are now working together so that android phones can see airtags (for anti stalking)

@@gplamahow does Apple define visible? The serial on Assiomas is on the back of the pod I believe. So once installed is sandwich between the crank arm with minimal clearance. Would this count?
@@getur99 Probably not. I assume it'd have to be a unique serial registered with Apple (maybe from a block assignment from Apple...). All assumptions. I suspect it'd be security related.
4iiii are saying it's negligible. For reference: AirTags will typically last 12-18 months on one CR2032. The 4iiii P3/P3+ has a 'power meter' usage time of up to 800hrs. We'll have to wait and see how this goes in the real world over the next few months.
I don't know if you'll see this as the video is 6 months old. But I've just had my Precision 3 upgraded and I'm struggling to understand how Find My works on it. In brief, my bike lives in the shed about 50 meters from my house. The device is paired to the Find My on my personal iPhone. I did a ride this morning, so it connected to my personal phone and pinged the location. I was then inside the house for 9 hours, outside the bluetooth range. I then left my personal phone in the house and went to the shed with my work iPhone. I thought it was supposed to connect to any iPhone within range to ping the location. However when I went back inside, the location hadn't been updated, or the last time it was seen hadn't updated. So I'm confused. If it only updates the location when it connects to my personal phone, what use is it if the bike gets stolen. If anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful.
AirTags (and similar compatible devices) will ping the location from any iDevice device, not just your own. Not sure what was going on with your particular scenario. One for 4iiii or Apple Support.
It’s registered to another Apple ID? A reset should stop it reporting the location (maybe). If it’s anything like an AorTag with registration then the original owner will need to remove it from their account.
I’m Shane, who has since been shorn. 🤣 It’s a combination of being lazy and having a wisdom tooth extracted. I left my face alone for a few days and that happened. 🤣
Hmm, its a shame about the anti-stalk protection. No one is going to be buying one of these to stalk someone at £350+. There are far better devices for that than trying to slip a crank into someone bag for that sort of money... The reason airtags could be used for that is because they are cheap not because they are that great for it. If a thief gets a notification that an airtag is following them just after they stole a bike then they will either remove anything that looks like a battery and if they can't find it they will probably dump your bike somewhere. If you're lucky they won't trash it to spite you.
Stalking with a power meter 😂. So I’m going to remove their crank, it has to be a 4iiii so they don’t notice, do so without them noticing, pair it with their head unit so they don’t notice, and then track them. Safe to say there will never be power meter stalking.
It'd be a requirement from Apple. Companies have to take this matter seriously. Let's say there was no anti-stalking/alerts with this. Then it'd be a certified stealth way to use the FindMy network for that purpose. A minute or so with a sharp knife would remove the pod and give you something only slightly larger than an AirTag, with no speaker. I'm not saying it financially makes sense. It's a policy in place to protect people, so it's a good thing.
Problem with AIRtags.. Someone with an IPhone (only) must be in range of the airtag reception... if no Apple Iphones are around, the AirTag will not do anything. So if your stolen item ends up in a country that has no Apple phones, then your item will never be located or recovered.. They only kinda work with the correct conditions.
That’s a given. But which country doesn’t have iPhones? Check out the AirTagAlex channel for extensive word wide AirTag tests to the most remote locations.
@@gplama and when an airtag is pushed into a metal shed, the signal no longer is received by Iphones.. if the theif has an Iphone, they can detect the signal and find the tag before it is caught..
