If I knew him I'd ask him to read some bed time stories and record them, then play them back to children. He has such a soothing voice, it would help lull children to sleep.
Willis Orchard is good. I ordered Hosui pear 3ft rootstock and fruited in less than 3 years. Now it is 12ft. I've ordered hostas from them too. Never been disappointed.
I just bought a Hosui and a 20th century from Willis Orchard and have them planted. They came about 5 feet tall. Sounds like they may start to fruit next year? Can't wait, lol
I ordered 4 asian pear trees from Stark Bros in 2018 when they had a sale. All four trees produced fruit the second year. What I have done is order asian pear scions from Burnt Ridge and grafted them to the assian pear trees and european pear trees. I have one tree that has eight types of asian pears.
OMG I have finally found someone who knows about the tree and also lives in my zone. Thank you so much for all the info I will place the order today! 😁
Just discovered your video this evening. Thanks for your diligence and detailed video as well as all of the precise follow up. I've learned so much today which will definitely help me with my pear trees.
I am glad you did this video because I have been thinking about getting a fruit tree. Now I know I will look for a three in one tree since I have limited space, and it will have to be planted in a container. Will watch for your updates. Good luck and enjoy.
Hi Khang! Thank you very much for your tutorial. I purchased a Hosui Asian Pear tree back in 2021 online. It came in a package with the root wrapped in straw. According to the directions, it said to keep the bare root in the straw and to make the hole twice as big as the bare root. It is now 2023, and I have not seen anything on this tree. It has a strong root, but the branches have not yielded buds or flowers. Is this normal? Should I redig the tree out and take out the straw? I am not sure what to do.
Hi beautiful trees I just purchased a Asian Pear tree and about to plant it, thank you for the info and I would like to see pictures of your trees fruiting and can you give time lines on how long and time of the year, I'm in Florida zone 9b.
What a great video man just subscribed I’m starting out with some Asian pears never grown these kinds of trees before thank you for all the great information definitely looking forward to new videos of yours
You can thin the fruit heavily so that the weight doesn’t end up breaking limbs and killing the tree eventually. Thinning will also help get better size and sugar content to your fruits. Good luck!
I really enjoyed your video. I have a 20th Century tree that I love. This year the Monsoon was really strong and some of the fruit got really big. I wonder if they'll always be this big if I thin the fruit? I thinned some of the branches but not all of them. The tree is about 6 years old. I loved it so much that I planted a Korean Giant a couple of years ago. The first summer was really hard on it and it almost died. I cut off all the dead branches and left it alone. I noticed that it has a lot of new growth but they're all growing straight up, making the tree really narrow. I guess I should cut a few off, but I wonder if I prune it so some of new branches will grow outward? I don't have a really big yard, so I planted it kind of close to the 20th Century tree. Wish I had known about the 3-in-one tree you got.
Hi Patti. Trim the surrounding branches in the spring - always cut to the trunk, so that the weak branches to the eye (bud) inward 1-2 mm above the bud (eye) slightly obliquely and the stronger branches to the bud (eye) outward. Reduce the number of branches according to the density in the given tree crown. If the branches cross, you must cut one of them at the trunk just behind the branch ring. Shorten common branches in the crown by 1/3 of their length. After cutting, coat larger branches with tree balm or splitting wax. Let it grow!
Beautiful and great technique tutorial vid, I like it how you expain thoroughly the how and the why so people can follow. I subbed by the way . Keep on growing 🌱🌿☘🍃🌴✅
One nursery sold me a pear tree and said it was self pollinating, it wasn't. A different nursery sold me two trees that they said were compatable to cross pollinate each other, they weren't. Always do your own research before purchasing!
Agreed! Many of these varieties may fruit on their own but very few. With a pollinator, they will produce more fruits. I think it also depends on the region. Some could be self fruitful in one region and not another.
@@KhangStarr Yes, there's so much to research and just because someone works in a nursery it doesn't mean they know what they're talking about! Thank-you for all the information you provide, it's much appreciated!😊
I have yet to prune back the Asian pear trees. I have 4 total - 3 trees from local nursery and 1 from Willis Orchard. Also, I need to top them off so they all can be 10ft or lower.
I lived in Korea for a couple years. The pears are not impossible to get where I live, but man, would I love to grow my own. Thanks so much for the upload, I will absolutely get a Korean Giant to match my other pear tree (impulse buy). Take Care!
A few weeks ago I grafted Asian pear scions to an unknown apple variety that produces very little mediocre fruit and every single scion budded out leaves and one is even flowering. I thought Asian pears and apples were not compatible for grafting but as of now the Asian pear buds are growing beautifully. Should I remove the Asian pear flowers from the scion since it is the first year the scions were grafted or will it be able produce fruit in the first year?
I was looking up some info on asian pear trees because a while back i ate a few and they were delicious so i decided to plant the seeds. Now i have close to 20 asian pear trees growing after 1 1/2 years and the majority of them are over 5 feet tall.
@@KhangStarr I planted them from seeds from some Asian pears I ate a while back, but they haven't fruited yet. I'm not too sure what kind variant they are either. All I remember from when I bought them was that they were being sold as Ya Li pears
I have 2 Asian pears and one produces way too much fruit to keep up with! So much that they can't mature. The tree gets covered with hundreds of fruit but only 1 or 2 mature. This year I pruned it back pretty hard and will be knocking off as many blooms as I can this week. The other has been problematic from early on. Glad to see you using Willis Orchards, I've been thinking about getting some elderberries from them. Good luck with your trees.
Nice, David! Once my tree produce fruits, I will be pruning off some as well. I usually wait until I actually see a good size fruit before I select which to cut off.
@@KhangStarr went out back to start and apparently the wind last night help out and knocked off many blooms. I just gotta replace the rope on my pole trimmer and get these trees down to a manageable size, they're very tall. Can't wait to see how that four in one grafted tree does!

I don't know where you live, your 3-in-1 pears is a Dave Wilson tree. Dave Wilson Nursery supplies the whole US and you should look up its website . They have a list of all the nurseries carrying their trees. My advice is to call up the local nursery and order the tree .
@@KhangStarr I got 1 shinko. Are you from california? I am in kansas, and the ground around my house is also clay...will need to get some fertilizer and mulch and top soil.
Where did you get the first tree from? I ordered one from Stark Bros., and it never grew and turned completely black within 3 months. ☹ I bought one from a local nursery (Green Side Up...they'reawesome! ), and it was perfect, but they only had one variety. My local Home Depot and Lowe's didn't have any Asian pears. Currently I'm trying to germinate some seeds from a Korean Giant pear that I got from the Korean market.
...just bought my 4/1 tree today from Willis too. How much did your 4 in 1 grow in 1 year? I’m a bit concerned as it is grafted on a semi-dwarf stock so it will grow to 12-15’ in the ground and fairly wide out. I initially wanted a dwarf pear but decided that having 4 varieties was worth it vs the dwarf. The area I have, I don’t really want to plant and have it grow 15’ so I’ll probably air pot it instead. Did you prune/pluck off the 1st time buds in order to get larger/more fruit next year? ....Hows your StarkBro tree doing? I bought from them 3x over the last 5 years and you pretty much get a small stick. And IMHO they seem to be less resistant to diseases too. I probably will not order from them again. Another company I like is Citrus.com. I ordered a dwarf satsuma tree a few years ago and now ready to replant from air pot to ground. Btw, I noticed you have mulch covering up to your main stem, shouldnt you be leaving 6”-12” around the main stem. Thats for sharing your trees!
what city is the Home Depot from? I never see any fruit trees in Home Depot here OMG $30 for that huge pear tree. Tell me where this Home Depot is at. LOL that very cheap shipping, dear
Khang, I love your videos! You do have a great calming voice! Check out One Green World for fruit trees and berries! They carry a good variety and they are securely shipped. Also they are sent with all proper USDA papers to assure your receiving a good healthy plant! I can't wait to see the results you get!
Hi Khang, your videos are awesome and what I've been looking for. I bought one New Century Asian Pear Dwarf and one Starking® Hardy Giant™ Asian Pear Dwarf six years ago. I don't have any knowledge of taking care of them. Last two years they did produce fruit, not a lot, not big either but taste good. I saw the trees and fruits were attacked by ants, bees and squirrels. During the fruit growing season more and more pears would have black spots outside and got part of inside bad too. I guess that's caused by bees. I saw squirrel climb upon the tree, steal the pear and run away. I would like to adopt some of your methods to protest my trees and fruits. I have two questions and hope you can help: 1) what is the product name you use as glue on the edge of the cup to prevent ants from climbing up the tree and where you got it? 2) where did you get the white bag you use to cover the pear or did you make it yourself, what material is that and where you bought it? Hope I can do a lot better with your help this year. Thanks in advance. Peter
