For your library, you could “secretly” sort by genre/alphabetical/etc. as far as you know, but for the kiddos and classroom librarian job, you could number every book with a sticker dot that matches the bin number they belong in! Easy for the kids but also advanced organization as well. Everything looks so nice!

For the library you can have bin 1,2,3... and then on the books you can label what number bin they go to

I let anyone who needed to calm down go to the calm down area, but EVERYONE had to fill out a "why I'm here" little half sheet. Surprisingly, most kids didn't want to do that, so they only used the area when they really needed it.

Understand where you’re coming from, however, you don’t know what’s going on in their life behind scenes, they could be getting groomed and have been told not to tell anyone, if they’re having a hard day dealing with that and need a safe space to calm down, they may not use it because they’re scared they’ll get in trouble. I know that’s an extreme situation but I would personally worry that I was preventing a child from using something they needed. That would be my only worry, I know this because (I know this is no comparison to being groomed etc) when I was in school I was bullied and didn’t tell anyone because I either didn’t realise I could or I thought I deserved it so didn’t want to tell anyone and I was very good at hiding when I needed help the most and now I’m suffering from permanent effects because I didn’t get the help I needed. I know a lot of children also have difficulties knowing what their emotions are. So my fear definitely would be that I was pushing students away from getting help or time to calm down that they needed. Especially with the effects of the pandemic, a lot of children are having so many more emotions and don’t know why, because it’s been a traumatic period of time no matter how well they’ve seemed to cope or parents have hidden the extremes of it. Obviously, you know your kids but personally I’d rather have kids ‘abusing’ the calm down area than hurting themselves more

I like the bathroom timer idea. That will help motivate them to get in, take care of business, and get back to class before the sand runs out. I love watching classroom setup videos this time of year! Also, I clicked on your video because...my daughter´s name is Bailey. She actually is a Pre-K teacher. I teach 5th grade math in NC and have been teaching for 25 years. I am glad I found your channel and have subscribed!

I would put the chairs up against the wall and move the wood book crate to the left 90 degrees to create more of a book nook area. hopefully, that makes sense. as for the book bins, you could split them by genre.

Something I did with my books (also third grade!) is washi tape. I tape the spine and part of the bin or label. Then kids just need to match the tape.

Your classroom looks beautiful. I do love the library chairs; just move them back a little. I think your third graders will enjoy being in such a well organized room with many interesting things to look at. I wish you a very successful school year. 👍

Tape your word READ on top of the lights to cover them up, then you will have a heading. Would look good with the letters in pink.

I love the chairs! The kids need a space to make it feel comfortable and cozy. I loved in high school my drama teacher had a sofa and chairs and everyone hung out in her room. It will be a great spot for your kids to read!

I wouldn’t do a free for all because you want everything to be as structured as possible. Allow them to pick what they want but I would divide the library up by series. Get a front picture that can represent each genre and then make some circle stickers that have the same image (with your color preference)- so when your librarians go to check the area, they can put the books back based on the sticker (corresponding bin)

You could do Teacher picks/books of the month displayed on the top shelf. That could be fun and engaging and may make them want to read books you suggested or like for each month (: Also have the same laminator sometimes you can feed it through again to straighten it out!

I would try and move your laptop cart to where they can access it easier and not necessarily around other students as that can be distracting. If you’re not using them everyday then I could understand keeping it where it is.
For the light switch by your desk area, make sure it doesn’t turn off your fridge😬
Your room looks very cozy and welcoming! Wishing you a year full of many blessings this school year.

I also think the main thing with the chairs is that they're normal size unlike the chairs at the desks so if you put them against the wall it might help the area feel less closed off and you could switch the chairs for the bench so it's still it's own section

the books you can sort them by genre/ alphabetical/length/level/etc. and get colored sticker dots, each bin is a different colored dot and all the books in the bin have a sticker on the spine with the correct color. then you can have one of your students put them all away in the correct bin at the end of the day!

My laminator did the same thing and it’s because the paper inside the sheets have to fill up most of the space. I think If you reprint the group numbers, laminate the whole sheet then cut out the hexagons that will work best!

On top of the brown bookshelf on the ground. I would get a table runner and put that on top of it, It would add a nice touch to the library.

I volunteered in a classroom and what she did for sorting her books was having the books with pictures that associated with how they were sorted and then the same stickers would be on the bin. That way it’s easier to sort!

Have you ever thought of having desks grouped into sets of five? If you made four groups of five, that would give more floor space by your library/ chrome cart. You will only have a group of four near the library section. I would make the group by having three desks facing the two desks that are centered in the line of three.
(It is hard to describe. Lol.)

Could the chrome books be moved closer to small group/morning present slider thing? I feel like that would make a lot more space for an additional book shelf. It would also have a flow for doing your morning routine stuff. I know sometimes they have to be in a certain area based on plugs and guidelines but just a thought!

That could be like a calming spot, or if the kids want to sit there when reading a book or something they can sit on the chairs. You can send 2 people there and they can read books. Or you can only leave 1 chair there and that could be a calming spot.

I think if you scoot the word work area over toward your small group area a little bit and move the chairs back, it will open the library area and ensure you have room for the bookshelf. I think it looks adorable and will be a nice area for the kiddos

My school PTA puts out a wishlist during Book Fair week and parents love to buy their teachers books off the list. Also, the librarian allocates some of the money raised to go towards teacher libraries as well as the school library... Also, parents are always looking for somewhere to donate books that their kids have read over and over so during meet the teacher or open house days, add a book donation memo to your handout and set out a bin on the sign in table for books that parents/children want to donate.

I agree about the calm down corners. Putting fidgets and other incentivizing materials in a place where children can only access them by engaging in a behavior seems counter intuitive.
I think it’s valuable to teach students to request these items when they need them.
Having an area where children can “calm down” isn’t inherently bad but it feels chastising.
