Very nice work! It's sometimes hard to make these pre-NES games look exciting but you've done well in creating a story behind them, I work with Gaming Alexandria and we've preserved several Hudson Soft/Nintendo collaborations including the PC-88 port of this game. Always great to see people highlighting these little corners of video game history!
TH-cam Algorithm actually doing its job, recommending a small creator with really good editing???? unreal loving the video a lot already and I'm not even 5 minutes in lol
The craziest thing is that it was THESE games that got me to dive into the console scene, simply because I wanted to see an expanded Donkey Kong 3. Also not gonna lie, every new frame that cuts back to sleepy Lex is geniunely adorable and fun to see.
@JComX Oh I mean all the remakes of Sharp games. I figured if Mario Bros could be as fun as it was, maybe this would be the same....of course, I don't think either of us were prepared for this trip.
Watching this video I slowly realized that there actually IS a cohesive story and plot (mostly) told through the background images in this game. Level one starts off with Stanley fighting dk on a highway, stage 2 being on a tunnel either below or next to the road, and with a ufo flying through the atmosphere for a crash landing in the sky. Stage 3, the countryside, is Stanley and dk going up to the site of the crash, with the ufo from stage 2 being in the background, now crashed and smoking. Stage 4 is Stanley and DK meeting up with the aliens, using the surrealist Solway Spaceman design that was likely the inspiration for Earthbound's infamous Starmen. Stage 5, in the ufo, has you, well, in the aliens; ufo again, stages 6-10 having you flying through space i the ufo; leavig earth, going through an asteroid belt, flying past saturn, and heading torwards the alien's home planet, landing on the duny wasteland of the planet's exterior. In the cave is likely either in the canyon visible in the desert stage, or the large pyramid, and leads into an active volcano, Stanley and dk getting closer to its erupting craters as the second half of the level changes backgrounds. Leaving the volcano, The Dome is likely an alien military testing site, judging by the cropcircle-like drawing of a bird, the runway, and the nuclear explosion capping it all off, likely being some sort of weapon testing site. The last two images I have two theories for. Either it's the cloudy planet sky after the bomb went off, Stan and dk heading past it torwards one of the alien's capital cities, OR, it could be the explosion sending Stanley and dk back onto earth, being signified by the sunset, and the city just being like. I dont fuckin know new jersey or smth. There was a lot of thought put into the backgrounds for this game rather than just purely trippy weird sci-fi visuals, but I also absolutely do not blame anyone for thinking so seeing how offputting and quite frankly unfitting they are with the Mario universe, feeling more like something out of metroid or kirby 64 than anything Mario-related lol.
@@TheHylianBatman thank you!! Lexi and I really wanted to get this episode out by Halloween, so we've been spending basically all our time working on it! Thank you for watching! :D
Just found your channel and have been binging your videos over the past week! Awesome stuff! And, honestly, I would love to see something with Stanley back in it; he doesn't deserve his current state of obscurity.
This is how urban legends are started. Seriously, imagine describing this to someone back in the day without being able to prove it Great video as always! Perfect Halloween vibes!
That "on the ground" bird is also used in the arcade game seires Xevious which also seems somewhat familiar to some pf the backgrounds of this game as in pyramids the bird in the ground and the cones with the bird and the runway Xevious is also a space shooter where you attack the air and ground
@@JComX yes you are. Also I love the video. I never knew about most Nintendo pc games. These extensions of the Nintendo library are just so interesting
The artistic choice in darker and muted colors that you chose was a brilliant idea. You always go for a bright neon aesthetic so having something thats opposite of your style is can be very hard to do but not only did you nail it with a horror vibe, you had it tie in to the game inself AND making that homage to the ring footage at the beginning, giving it an amazing atmosphere. i knew it was coming but that last part definitely got me! I can appreciate hard work and this was definitely sweat inducing! Thanks to teaching me a new DK3 was around. Its my favorite game in the trilogy so learning about this was really intriguing! Congrads on the original developer hitting you back up! That must've been an amazing experience! Cant wait for the next video! Buuuut i got one question: What is the story behind the breaking of evil dead 2013 event she mentioned? And did you guys watch the new one yet?
@Reoko77 haha I'm so glad you caught the Ring influence! And thank you for noticing the effort we put into making this episode feel different! I thought it would be a fun contrast from the typical videos. It makes me happy that it all paid off in the end. :3 Oh gosh! Hahaha yeah, sooo.. when Lexi and I were still dating early on, she was not familiar with horror movies at all, and I decided it would be a great idea to show her Evil Dead 2013, no warning, just going in raw. Needless to say, it was a traumatizing experience for her, and learning experience for me. Thankfully that movie basically taught her to swim in the waters of horror, and she enjoys horror now. Although I will still pre-watch movies and warn her if there's anything particularly brutal or nasty. We did see the new one, in theaters even! I was a little disappointed, but I thought the ending was fun and there were some good moments. Maybe I'll have to watch it again. Did you like it? I also need to keep watching Ash vs Evil Dead. I was enjoying that too.
@JComX Lmao what a way to start someone off in horror! That was like taking a 5 year old out of the splash area and hurling them into a wave pool! You outta pocket for that one man lol! As for the new evil dead, i definitely enjoyed it. It had its differences but i like how it terms of deaths, it didnt discriminate. Im just waiting for ash to come through now. How he hasn't popped in the new movies yet is criminal. The shows are good and all but you gotta bring him and the chick from 2013 back. Thats begging for a sequel bait.
I would’ve farted back at the monster at the end. But wow, dope Nintendo History right there and those backgrounds are so freakin weird for a Donkey Kong game. Had no idea it existed. Wish more obscure things like this came out from Nintendo, or that they were ported over to Switch. Anyways, fantastic video and animation as always🔥🔥
yeah this game was a bizarre one! weird backgrounds like it's one of those text adventure games, but it's Donkey Kong 3? also suppose we'll just have to make up our own lore to explain the weird backdrops, haha.
@firstcontact152 apparently a lot of people just didn't bother with the game, because they thought it was just a simple port of Donkey Kong 3. Thought nothing of it.
