  • On this week’s episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Paul Mecurio ( / paulmecurio ) sit down to answer a grab bag full of Cosmic Queries that span the cosmic spectrum. We start at the beginning - the Big Bang. Is “Big Bang” a misnomer for what actually happened? Neil and Paul try and figure out if there’s a better name. You’ll learn how the origins of the name “Big Bang” were birthed from the Steady-state model hypothesis. Discover more about the differences between a law, a hypothesis, and a theory.
We ponder a thought experiment that explores the boundary conditions of the Earth and the Universe. We ask: if you travel close to the edge of the universe, will you see the other side? Find out the immense reach that astrophysical terminology has in popular marketing and everyday products. We discuss Star Trek and what things from the show could be true in real life.
You’ll hear why space tourism requires fundamentally new technology in order to make it accessible for everyday people. Neil tells us about his lottery idea that can send people into space for one dollar per person. You also find out the real costs for sending things into orbit. And, Nell explains why it’s almost certain that there will be fatalities when pushing a frontier forward, like the early days of the airplane industry.
Dive into the delicious mysteries of dark matter: Is it a placeholder for our incomplete understanding of gravity? Does it work differently on galactic scales? Can we eventually use it to help us travel through space? Learn more about the science of something exploding in space. Get details on the tricky business of catching neutrinos. Lastly, you’ll discover why it’s hard to pinpoint the center of the universe. All that, plus, you’ll explore the obstacles in trying to communicate with extraterrestrial life.

What gets my curious about the universe is, whether the producers of StarTalk are out of whack about running a podcast in a format that people could appreciate it to the fullest, or just dumb?
Thank you.( PS : English is not my first language. I hope my question was clear).

Hi, I always had this thought that as the boundaries of the visible universe is determined by the time from the big bang and the distance that light could travel since then. That would mean that each point in space is the center of its own visible universe. Then it would not be wrong to say that I am the center of my own universe. Thank you, greetings from Argentina

I'd like to ask Dr Tyson a question regarding the age of the Earth. On one of his episodes of Cosmos, a scientist was tasked with determining the amount of lead in a zircon crystal as compared to the amount of uranium. The science was supposed to be determining the age of the Earth. On another episode of the series, Dr. Tyson was discussing element formation. The big bang was responsible for the hydrogen (a lot), helium (a little), and lithium (a tiny amount). Everything else up to iron was forged in the fusion processes of stars of varying masses with only the highest mass stars able to produce iron in their fusion cores. All elements past iron on the periodic table have been produced as a result of supernovas, including lead and uranium. As there are no solar system formation mechanics able to produce uranium or lead (or anything past helium, for that matter) how is determining the lead/uranium ratio anything other than simply determining the age of the uranium? Is there a planetary formation process that locks the uranium in zircon of which I am unaware?

Now, reference this in relation to the super earths that are being found. Is there any hypothesis as to how large their cores might be and consequently the strengths of their magnetic fields.

I call the Big Bang the “Big Sigh” since a sigh is typically quiet and I like to believe that’s when the universe took a breath in and breathed life out

Neil if you ever read that, I hope you have remember to include the jaguar in your list. I mean jaguars exist in the universe so that seems to fit your logic.

What if dark matter is matter neighbouring our position on the axis of the the fourth spatial dimension? That would allow us to feel the effects of the matter (the gravity) without seeing it or lack of it or being able to physically interact with it?

The great expanse would be a good name for the big bang

Though if you really went there, guess what, you'd end up in the Bible! Hahaha! That's why I love science... It's all in the Bible. So call it the great expanse please 😂🙏

Pulsar is a motor bike model hugely popular in India and Titan is a Watch company.. and btw if there are any developers out there then you would know the whole versions of Eclipse IDE with the versions named after Jupiter moons (Callisto, Europa, Juno, Ganymade etc) and other solar names like Helios, Mars, Neon

Live the way you wanna live. If space is what you like go for it. Making your parents happy is useless they will die and you will be sad for the rest of your life with a job you dont like. Try to search ppl like you in the internet, dont stay alone

Shouldn't the center of the universe be considered the point where most matter is moving away from? (for the most part)

I do wonder about the center of the universe, and why it’s typically avoided in astrophysics discussions. Center of the galaxy? Supermassive black hole. Center of the universe? ...... Moving on.

I'm not religious at all. But what always rattles my brain, what is the universe in? What was here before the big bang? And how long was there no universe as we know it? Everything has a beginning and end, so how does our universe end? When? What happens after? If space is nothing, then how does it expand?

I can just imagine people in space suits trying to set up bowling pins in the cold, unforgiving vacuum of space and then bowling and it all just floats away. And then they'd go back in the ship or whatever and eat weird astronaut food.

Cellphone earbuds totally freak me out. I always forget that they're a normal part of life in this digital world in which we live. SO my first assumption is "that guy must be crazy. Who does he think he's talking to ?" It just doesn't occur to me that they're just talking on their cellphone.

What if gravity is related to the absorption rate of photons? While we think of photons in terms of vectors, would it be incorrect to think of them in a mild sense as a fluid? It could potentially explain why black holes can absorb light using gravity alone.
