I admire your courage. I did the same only I was 46yr. becoming single, living in huge population around the Houston,Tx area.
Found a little stone cottage at end of road with 44acres not lived in for years. Lots of repairs but has been worth it. It's own spring water and trees everywhere in the Ozark Mountains, Arkansas, USA.. It's now been 29 yrs.later. Best thing I ever did for myself. My family loves coming to visit even if they have to use the composting toilet, lol. Timing is everything, when living in nature and growing foods. Thanks for your video. I get where you're coming from. Life is good. Peace and blessings

@Ditch Green Such bourgeois niceties: shi...t* hole you mean? Always was, long before the EU, and will always be. It had, when I was young, a cultural unity-from the famine migrations and Jewish ones, and Kentish migrants of 19th century. Now its multicultural, which means it has no culture, is empty of an identity, and ailing from the absurd.

      Ditch Green .....
How true and the sad thing is big cities don’t have to be dirty noisy polluted unhealthy places.
But they make lots of money for a few people so they will stay that way.
Those of us who live there are not important.
Well done and good luck to anybody escaping and living a better life.🌺

Back in 1994 I had to "get on my bike" and take a job in London. I bought a house next to a friend living at Canary Wharf at a time when the place was regarded as out in the sticks/white elephant so it was well below London prices.
By 2003 I really couldn't take it any more. Whilst where we lived was fine with good neighbours it was becoming increasingly dangerous once you got north of the Canary Wharf district and into Tower Hamlets around Mile End, Wapping and Whitechapel. I'd had to fight off a gang one night when I took my dog to the vets, the vet himself had recently returned after an attack that had left him in an induced coma, my wife had had stones thrown at her, guys I knew had been threatened in Limehouse to get out of their area as they weren't Muslim, lone women were being mobbed and sexually assaulted etc etc. Work was also just so stressful it was making me ill with long hours, travel, endless meetings etc. I put my house on the market and resigned my job. The sense of freedom was amazing...like a ton weight off my shoulders. I moved to Brittany, an old granite farm house in nearly 2 acres, and haven't looked back. I have a well, produce my own firewood, fish, walk, travel.
Now on my rare visits to the UK I cannot wait to get home.
Last May I travelled back by plane and stayed two nights in Birmingham city centre where I was born and enjoyed my teenage years. Big mistake. Donald Trump has a word for it....I say no more 😨

Be happy God still has work for you to do here on earth. When that work is accomplished He will call you home to be with him too.

I'm 64, strong and love working with my hands. Nature has always been my refuge and I wish to love and protect her until I am compost... Good job! So wish I had done that when I was your age. Beautiful place with a lovely garden. Great memories from when I was a child. We have a collie too (or ‘sheep dog’ as we usually call him) and he just loves where we live. I spent last year in a country cottage in the Philippines writing/editing and getting an online business started. I moved to Spain last week and will soon be starting a new venture here while teaching ESL. I think happiness is all about finding a way to do your own favorite things. So much of the "workforce" is slavery- working on achieving other people's dreams instead of our own. It took me about six months in the Philippines to realize that I never wanted to return to the "workforce." I only want to do what I enjoy and live where I enjoy living. Your aims reminds me of mine. 😍

Beautiful winter day here with strong sunshine, so I let my chickens out for a scratch. My partner and I put in 40 solar panels in 2017. Life is very good -- horses, goats, chickens, dogs and cats. And a good man. I know this guy has the recipe for happiness that so many crave. It is NOT about stuff.

I love your story. Best wishes to you. I grew up much like you, but on a dairy farm in rural Alaska. I had a magnificent childhood and spent most of my time outdoors. I am amazed at the size of your garden. It has got to be a lot of work. Other than Moss, it sounds like you live alone. Do you ever get lonely? My wife and I built the home we currently live in, plus a cabin, and a cottage. The cabin was the first building on our property and had electricity, propane heat but no sewer and no running water. We lived that way for eighteen months until we built the cottage which had running water (well) and a septic system. The house took a good ten years to complete. My wife and I did 90% of the work on all of the structures. She learned how to do the electrical from illustrated books.

Jemma Fedrick.....My ex-brother-in-law grew up in the Delaware Water Gap area. They had a camp and they rented out spaces for campers during the summer.
They had to go pump water when they needed it. He followed the old saw, "If it's yellow it's mellow. If it's brown flush it down."
They were all home schooled by their parents and they hunted deer and squirrel for food.
When he and my sister bought their first house, he shut off the "pilot light" on their gas range. He said that most of the gas used each month was from the "pilot light" burning. He had a tool that he squeezed that made a spark which lit the flame of the burner they were going to use.

Thanks so much. It's amazing (and quite sad) how many old cottages have been left to ruin in Ireland. People are clamoring these days for huge concrete houses, but I'm hoping when the tiny house movement hits Ireland the little cottages will get a bit more love!

Rained every day for whole of August last time I toured around in an old motor home around the whole of Eire . That amount of rain could make you depressed , I felt. To avoid illness, as a retired professional surveyor, I would recommend rebuilding that cottage as the basic structure sadly will not really ever be dry even with renovation . You will be better in the caravan , and can always change it cheaply too.

My dream is to live in a little cottage in Ireland. I’m very drawn to that country and I put it down to my ancestry. Also living the simple life is something T aspire to. We are such a throwaway society and I want to go back to how my Grandparents lived by growing their own food, simple cooking, and no clutter that has no purpose in my home. Good luck to you!

I've often thought I'd like to buy a cottage there. My brother inherited (the inheritance came down to the oldest son of the oldest son) a cottage there but sold it without telling my other brother and me so we never had a chance to buy it from him. Sigh. Anyway, I will be following your progress and I'm sure it will inspire me to keep going. Comhghairdeas! Is maith liom É. Is tÍr álainn Í Éire! Go raibh maith agat agus go n-eÍrÍ leat!

Interesting because this eldest son inherits all is pretty old fashioned. I do wish he had given his brothers the opportunity to hold onto the cottage. I know how important history can be. My grandfather built two cottages by a lake in Ontario, Canada back in the late 40’s. My father passed them onto the seven kids. Basically, who ever wanted to go in on them could with the goal to keep them in the family. Three of my siblings opted to share costs and four of us opted out with only wishes of best of luck. While I opted out I can go and visit the cottages or stay the night anytime. My parents’ ashes are scattered there, the memories run deep of my grandfather fishing etc...I am so sorry you lost out on the opportunity.
