  • We had four Australorp chicks hatch out, despite the hottest Summer in recorded history.
    Watch the baby chickens grow from (Day 1 to 3 Months) their first day to three months old and see them interact with Mother Hen and the other Chicken and Ducks.

    😄 I had to laugh when you said all the chicks were roosters. My husband and I ordered 25 chicks when we had a little land and over half of them turned out to be roosters. One rooster is great, but over a dozen is enough to drive a person mad!

      Living The Dream Homestead it was extreme, January had only 1 day below 37C and 11 days were above 40C.... I seriously thought this aircon fade would be a good idea as it was 40C in the house but felt hotter than outside at 46C in the shade.
      Thankfully we only had a few problematic fires nearby in the season and that was really all. The CFA sorted them all out and we weren’t as affected as you.
      We still haven’t had any rain though so the drought continues.

As long as you don't bring in Guini-hens, Those would terrorize the entire yard and coop, plus they make a lot of noise.

    Australorps are apparently docile, quiet birds, do you find that to be true? Are they ever rowdy at sunrise or when they lay eggs? I've had 5 Isa Browns for a year now, and they are terrific layers, but I'm in town and tired of the early morning ruckus :D I've already sold 2 and thinking about replacing all of them with Australorps or Orpingtons. (Southern NSW, Aus here)

    • @MoatCottage
      @MoatCottage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brett Phillips g’day Brett, Australorps are fairly docile but still with great personalities. As far as noise, this varies on each bird.... I had a hen who made such a fuss when laying AND when her Sister was laying and yet her sister was as quiet as the Muscovies (which is very quite).
      Over the years (at times when I had no rooster) I have also had 2 hens that would crow. One was an Orpington and the other is an Australorp. The Australorp only crows after 7am when it’s time for me to let them out but the Orpington with crow randomly throughout the day.
      Neither crowed in the early hours of the morning like roosters though.
      I don’t think this is much help, but stay safe in NSW 😊

Rhode Island reds are also fun chickens, I have owned them before too, they are slightly smaller than the australorps and can be more fiesty but are also nice birds and would make a nice addition to your family.

      Elisa Campanelli it sounds like she may be a cockerel, they sound funny to start with before they get the hang of crowing, of course by the time they are roosters they have it worked out. When I have a hen that crows, she is usually older.

    Day old chick What age you stop feeding them with starter?

    • @MoatCottage
      @MoatCottage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the brand of starter you use, it will usually be written on the packaging.
      My birds become free range early, so start finding new things to eat (including the fermented grain for the adult birds) and so I phase out the starter at around 6 weeks and by 8 weeks they no longer get any.
      Some brands of feed will say to stop feeding it at 6 weeks due to the high protein, which can cause liver damage.

    Did you give any vaccine to chicks till 3 months?

    • @ElissaJayneOfficial
      @ElissaJayneOfficial 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Hamil, I have had free range chickens for 27 years and it has never been necessary for me to vaccinate there. If disease was an issue here, then I would. They do get medication in their feed for the first 8 weeks.

    Hi Elissa, hope you and your chicks will be fine. I am from Pakistan and trying to develop my own chicken farm especially the Australorp and RIR species of chicks, here both of the species are not pure and I am looking for the real ones. Could you please help me out in this regard.
    Best wishes and regards,
    Ahmed Raza Mastan.
