    I saw John Hiatt in Columbus OH in March of '85 on RIDIN WITH THE KING tour. It was a Sunday night and there were maybe 100 people at The Newport on High St. You would have thought there were 10,000 people there. John Staehle(Spirit, JoJo Gunne) was his lead guitarist. The drummer that night had played on TWO BIT MONSTER. I had seen few shows as powerful as that. It was later that BRING THE FAMILY was released and put him into a whole 'nother category. I saw him in Columbus again in the later 80s and a final time playing for a National Record Mart convention at 7 Springs Ski Resort(I managed stores for them for 20 years). Great songwriter and a survivor.

    I kind of like this phase of John Hiatt's music: the pre-"Bring the Family" years when he was still finding his sound, moving from the "American Costello" vibe of "Slug Line" to gritty blues rockers like this one, even the odd pairing with producer Tony Visconti on "All of a Sudden." There doesn't seem to be much other video around from those years, so this clip is a real gem.

    • @billholmes6933
      @billholmes6933 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For me, the SLUG LINE - TWO BIT MONSTERS - ALL OF A SUDDEN - RIDING WITH THE KING quartet is not only the apex of his recorded career but can stand alongside anyone else's. Sadly, it was the worst time of his life (pre-sobriety and his wife committed suicide) and I believe that's the main reason he hasn't performed most of these songs live since (RWTK being a notable exception). He has always had a remarkable band for live dates; who wouldn't want to get to play so many great songs?

    • @mikelewenson1818
      @mikelewenson1818 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You wouldn't think a Tony Viscounti production would work with the John Hiatt gritty, swampy sound but it does. Amazing how Hiatt can work with different musicians and create different vibes that sound great.

Another musician who is walking the path blazed by J.J. Cale.-exceptionally good and under appreciated at least as far as Mainstream “Music” is concerned. The same can be said for Ry Cooder’s career, on Slide, to his left.

    Jesse Harms on keyboard. When I saw a show on this tour, Daryl Verdusco played drums (this isn't him).

    First time I saw Hiatt play was on the Slow Turning tour, backed up by the Goners (Sonny Landreth and his buds), but this show is at least a few years earlier......here, Hiatt is so young he looks like a baby to me! I don't recognize ANY of the band members, does anybody know who they are? I couldn't get a good look at the guitarists' face, are we certain it's Ry? It sounds lke him but it doesn't really look like him. Yup, weird guitar, like a Tele crossed with a Teisco or a Wards Airlne....anyway, Hiatt looks and sounds good
    here, I presume this show is from the time period after he got sober...
    what I have yet to see on you tube is footage from the Perfectly Good Guitar tour. I saw them 4 times on that tour, and the early shows had some rocky spots but they got really really tight after being on the road a while (I think they toured for a year!). at one show, Mike Ward played an awe-inspiring slide solo on Thank You Girl that still raises my hair when I think about it!

      Scott Mathews, drums. Phil Aaberg, keys! Plus Cooder & Epstein. Scott & Ron Nagle aka The Durocs produced side 1 of Riding With the King, and Scott had a dream that inspired that song.

      On the album, Nick Lowe is the bassist and Martin Belmont from the Graham Parker & The Rumour is the other guitarist. Maybe that is Epstein on bass. How cool !

      That is absolutely Howie on bass. I did monitors for a couple of shows for John Hiatt on the "Slugline" tour - two records before this, and Howie was on bass then as well.

    Walking with the king was slang in the ghetto for being on heroin back in the '50's, and '60's.

      Tom Thomas Ripley. You can pan each individual string. Van Halen used one on Top Jimmy. Cool guitar for studio. Never seen anybody play one live till this.
