Don't forget that in infrared your focus point is slightly different! Old lenses (Canon FD, Nikkor AF-D, AI-S etc.) often have a little dot for IR photography so you can focus through the viewfinder, put on your filter and adjust, so if you use manual focus don't forget to adjust the focus point!
A big advantage of mirrorless cameras, for IR is that they have 'on chip' focussing, so one doesn't need to allow for focus shift.

Unimportant with mirrorless cameras, they focus on the image on the sensor.
One thing you must take into account is the filter's wavelength. The shutter speed will be longer the further it is from the visible range. 720nm seems to be the best for handheld photography.
Thanks for the detailed information, I’m looking at doing it for my camera outfit. Some methods are way involved using a thousand dollar Adobe application to manipulate the image. I like how the camera still shoots standard images, without the conversion you can’t really walk it back once it’s done
We had a doctor in camera club that attached a piece of infrared slide film to a Xray film while it was being developed. Showed them on the big screen. Unique.

You could start shooting IR photos from a cheap point-and-shoot camera converted. X100V could work, but catching IR, only black and white photos could get. Pictures of black skies and white trees get boring quickly.
Really useful video - I had been looking at camera conversions/picking up a cheap body to convert but this will be so much easier with my xt4

Having it converted will bring benefits like being able to use faster shutter speeds and stuff, so there is still advantages, but definitely try this first to see if you like the look before you commit 😊

This holds true for the GFX series. My 50s II also does an amazing job. The 35-70mm has zero center hotspots. Make sure you use a high quality Infrared filters for best infrared transmission. This allows lower ISO’s and smaller f/stops because more infrared light is coming through the lens. Cheap infrared filters are poor at transmitting light causing you to use longer exposures or higher ISO’s.
How do you know the difference in quality on IR filters? Price seems like a dangerous metric to trust. Any advice?
@@JanThomasPettersen trusted brands like Hoya, B+W, Heliopan even Tiffen have given me good results. Off Brands like Zomei or no name given just says select the infrared amount haven’t given me good result. My Haida 720nm does work very well and the quality looks similar to my Heliopan 715.

@@EddyMaynard I got my 50s II for $2799 brand new. My local camera store had them $500 less than the already Fujifilm $500 coupon because they weren’t selling as many as expected. It was an in store deal at Kenmore Camera, Seattle. I recommend the 50s II over the 50R because you gain image stabilization and newer easier menu. I’m an instructor for Action Photo Tours and been wanting better colors and the 4:3 ratio for wide angle photos. I mostly shot Sony A7R3A beforehand, now only for super telephoto shots. I’ve used infrared filters on the A7R3A, A7III, Leica M9M Monochrom, Nikon D5100, Fujifilm X100 works great, 4x5 and 6x17 Rollei 400IR film.
Most digital cameras can shoot IR, with a suitable filter on the lens, there's nothing unique to Fuji, the big disadvantage of 'non converted' cameras is that , as mentioned in the video there is a necessary great increase in expose, it depends how much this might impact the acceptability of the results. A converted camera allows much lower ISO's /faster shutter speeds/smaller aperture settings.
Fujis advantage is the filter is much weaker than most. I can’t shoot stuff handheld like this with my Sony cameras, or get images like this straight from camera without loads of post processing.
But yes having a camera converted definitely has advantages! Just with a bit sacrifice
Plus with a camera converted to full spectrum, you can get a good Hot Mirror filter and it returns your camera to normal shooting. The first Hot Mirror filter I got was from Kolari about ten years ago. Ok but not great. When I got my second full spectrum camera from LifePixel, I got their Hot Mirror and it is excellent. I now have the ultimate vacation cam.
I have gone the non-converted camera route. Pain in the ass. If you’re really in love with IR, get a converted camera. I highly recommend a full spectrum as it opens up many more options to you.
Nice video and topic. I really like to shoot IR as well. As for the color IR, it is fairly straight forward to create an action to save yourself a lot of time with the editing, and then patch processing all your images quickly.

Bought myself an IR filter a couple months ago to try on my x100f and I’m loving the results (despite the fact that I had to post process the images to get something useable). So stoked to have that film sim recipe so I can cut out the post processing step tho! Good lookin out man!

I have a XS10 and i’m looking to convert, but watching your video I was convinced to try the hoya first. I bought the hoya filter + a magnet ring (male and female) to use with it in case I need a quick focus adjustment. I’m planning to use it with my Viltrox 13 and my Laowa 9mmZeroD. tried with my xpro3 on a 33mm 1.4, results are not bad with a ton of sunlight, ill need to try more but if anyone wondering, its doable with some tweaking.

Yeah me either until I saw an old blog about the xt2 being able to shoot it and I was like hmmm 🤔 did a lot of googling and found out pretty much all the xtrans cameras can too. Fairly mad when people are paying for them to be converted! I guess with it still having a weak filter, converting would make it easier to get the photos (not having to shoot at a mad ISO) but overall it’s a very small sacrifice to get the same look
Nice video and good shout. Been using my Canon R5C in raw for infrared images with the Canon 50mm F1.2 but I like the idea of using the film simulations on jpgs with my X100V so I don't have to spend ages getting the look I want. So have ordered a smaller Hoya R72 filter as one i got is 82mm. Many thanks for this idea.

I've heard it works well with the Ricoh GR III too (weak IR filter in place). I have a GR and GR II aside of the X70, so it will be worth a try on all of them at some point... So far, for IR, I had used a small, older IR modified Panasonic GF-10 found on eBay for a misery years ago, but I took a full spectrum mod., which allows me to set any IR filter I want and get good results once custom white balance is set in camera for the given filter wavelength. (550nm, 590nm, 665nm, 720nm, 850nm, etc.). (For 560nm, I found that customizing white balance on green grass gives good results)
The lower frequencies are rather to deal with color infrared photography though (with custom WB, color channel swapping later in post and such), whereas the 720nm and above are usually more fit for black and white, although the 720nm can still bring little color in the sky (deep blue). Color IR editing can be little tricky but makes for unique pictures.
A little edit on a high contrast BW or color converted BW picture can also give a good 720nm IR effect style.

I got a very cheap filter on Amazon, but have yet to dive into the niche 😅 it is very interesting and different than what's out there and it probably has one of the cheapest entry cost to try out too. No need to an expensive lens, or dedicated body to start with.
Noealz channel goes a lot over IR photography, and I know there is a somewhat small community dedicated into replicating the discontinued IR film digitally via full spectrum converted cameras and a set of custom filters and picture profiles.
I just never invested the time to develop the skill for this niche photography.
Longer exposure times can actually be a good thing for panning photography, perhaps try some of that out next while combining with IR photography 😎👍👍
I had a cheap 82mm filter years ago for my canon camera and realised when I got it that it wasn’t IR sensitive like the Fuji’s are, and I was really disappointed to hear it would cost so much and be irreversible, so it’s awesome that it’s possible on the fuji cams!

Hi! I see the same effect (weak IR blocking filter) on my Olympus OM-5 camera. I don’t have any experience with Fuji but I see how much darker are exposures taken with my fullframe Sony. On Olympus, in bright daylight I set the ISO to ~400, shutter around 0.25 s and aperture f/4. with its fantastic IBIS I get sharp images by using HOYA R72. Don’t need to convert. It works fine.
That’s cool that olympus cameras do the same! And yeah I found the same with sony, it IS possible but with significantly longer exposure times and just not the same overall result, the weak IR filter of the fujis is the key point here 😊

Amazing ! But I'm quite surprised as many people tend to say that Fujifilm X100 series are no good for infrared photography as there are often hotspots on pics.
If you edit the raw files you do notice a slight difference in brightness in the middle of the frame, which I guess would be a ‘hot spot’, but I’m approaching this from the angle of someone who wants to do a bit of IR photography for fun. I think if you wanted to seriously do IR photography or you were doing it for scientific reasons and you wanted the absolute BEST quality, converting a camera to infrared would be the way to go, but that’s something that’s going to cost £££ whereas you can get this look with a cheap filter on the fuji cams combined with the built in recipes :)
@@EddyMaynard Yes, well, at least all the pics you've shown in your video were hotspotless, so I'll apply your settings and see what comes out of the camera. I love taking infrared photos in graveyards. I did it in Père Lachaise in Paris with a Lumix S5

This method of IR photography is NOT limited to FujiFilm cameras! Any digital camera can use an R72 filter.
Hi Dave! As explained in the video, fuji cameras are more sensitive to IR light than most cameras, so are much better suited to IR photography compared to other brands (eg. Sony) that have a much stronger filter and lose the ability to shoot infrared shots with a r72 filter handheld. Also they have the ability to get great looking infrared images straight from camera, thanks to film recipes.
This is unlike other camera brands where you’d have to post process the image, making this particular way of shooting infrared quite unique to Fuji.

What happens if you do it in color? Like say if I want dramatic pinks and blues?
Hi mate! So to the best of my knowledge, I believe to do this properly you do actually need to convert your camera for infrared, there’s something called ‘full spectrum’ conversion which means you can make your camera WAY more sensitive to infrared light and therefore capture a lot more.
I think there is a way you can make these 720nm images with the r72 filter colour, however I think it takes a lot of photoshop work and you can only do ‘False colour’ which means you can artificially colour them?
Honestly I’m not 100% sure, I’m sure someone will correct me on this anyway 😅 this article might help a bit!

Just as a side note - there’s an app called RNI Aero for iPhone that adds a ‘filter’ to normal images to make them look like aerochrome colour film which is really cool, obviously totally fake but you can 100% get that pink and blue look you’re on about just from any normal (non infrared) photo.

I have an X-E2 unfortunately I don't have many of the settings for this recipe 😞And how are you able to WB Shift and have it set to Kelvin? I can only color shift in auto WB.

you don't lose the ability to shoot normal photos btw. just get an IR blocking filter. Kholari calls theirs a hot mirror filter iirc.
Technically you could do video with this on too and get that VHS infrared video look?
Yes you could! But the footage would be very dark. The shot of me pointing the camera at the sun at 4:58 is with the x100v on video mode. You could crank up the iso a lot though and with a black and white profile it would look quite a bit like security cam footage I think!
Hear me out. If we remove the IR cut filter from the x100 sensor and replace the camera's nd filter with that, won't that create a camera which we can use for normal photography and infrared whenever we please? I been thinking about this idea for a while. I don't have an x100 to try this idea tho.😂

Technically yes, but you’d need very bright light and your iso to be very high so it would be grainy. Also I think continuous autofocus would struggle, so you’d have to manual focus. Definitely possible though!

On fuji x trans cameras you JUST need the filter, there’s no need to convert to infrared like most other cameras :)
If you don't want to do any post production and you don't mind back and white photos, then just follow the film simulation given in the video. If you need or want colors, then you'll have to do post production to achieve the results you desire.

@@amykortland6349 you can shoot infrared on other cameras but the filter is much stronger than the fuji so to achieve the same effect you need a much longer exposure time, so without a tripod it’s not possible, also you are stuck with motion blur in your images so it’s almost impossible to get the trees as sharp as they are in these fuji photos, hence why the fuji is perfect for it :)
@EddyMaynard Thanks - the video left me confused about why this technique was being called Fuji-specific. I think you touched on it briefly but it could have been spelled out more. I'd love to see a side-by-side comparison of photos shot this way and with a converted camera - any quality difference, or it just that you miss out on infrared color this way?
Back in the film days, we would use actual IR film.
It messes with the focus, when you put on the filter. Can't remember which way it pushes the focus though
I didn't have any issues with focussing on the x100v, however, Ive covered this in the video with an alternative method for focussing if this is an issue! 😊

Hi, you need the fujifilm filter adapter ring or the focus mechanism will hit the filter and cause an error like this, see 3.12 on this video

Honestly, I’m not sure, I’m a bit of an idiot when it comes to all this stuff I just found out fuji cams are way more sensitive than most so decided to make a video 🤣 I guess you’d need to expose for much longer though since it blocks out more light!

Thanks for the formula, Eddy. It's a bright sunny day here, and I tried it out on my X-T20 with a 720nm filter I used for film photography. Unfortunately, the camera doesn't allow me to dial in other than DR100, but every other parameter went in ok. However, I could not get the images to look "infrared", unfortunately. Does the dynamic range setting make the difference?.
Hi mate! Firstly, the dynamic range wont affect the infrared ability at all, but being locked to 100 is probably because you’re shooting on an iso lower than 320 maybe? I think you need to be on at least 320 to unlock dr200, and at least 640 to unlock dr400 - just so you know for future!
Did you try photographing things like trees and the sky with no clouds? These are the things most affected by the infrared filter.
I did shoot trees and sky in sunshine, actually. I realized after that I need to increase ISO to get higher DR as you say. We'll give it another go tomorrow - the sun's supposed to shine again!

Will this work with the R90 filter? (Deeper infrared, I used it with the Kodak Infrared film a lot.)

Compared to the grain I used to get when I shot Kodak infrared film this grain is virtually nothing 😁
Yeah I was very surprised at how well the fuji handled what is effectively the max iso of the camera! Pretty mad for a crop sensor
I also noticed this when I bought my X-T5. My theory is Fuji is a lot more sparing with where they set their "max" ISO, so while you can pull an ISO 102400 image out of it by boosting the exposure in post, it'll look like ISO 102400 in other camera vendors- messy as hell. Not the experience Fuji wants their customers to have.

every camera can do this not just fuji , this is no secret!! , better use tripod though
That’s not strictly true, most cameras have a much stronger infrared blocking filter, unlike the fujifilm ones, so exposure times would be VERY long
This. Literally all cameras with a hoya R72 filter can do this "trick".
Also, from the pics it seems that X100V is not even a good candidate. The 23mmf2 seems to have quite visible and distracting hotspot issues in some f settings, that do need some post processing to fix. Probalby better to use a cheap XC35f2 with a XT body for good-from-the-camera "IR".
i my self tried with Canon dslr 5DII, Nikon D810 dslr, sony mirorless A7RII -A7RIV , but only in very strong sunlight can shout handheld with very high iso,@@EddyMaynard
@@mhtsoskar7929 most other cameras have a much stronger IR filter so exposure times have to be crazy long, so handheld shooting is absolutely not possible unlike with the fuji cameras

Would you be able to recreate the sought after Kodak Aerochrome straight out of camera with these tricks?
I don’t think so, maybe with a lot of photoshop and some custom profiles you could get close, but I would 100% reccommend the ‘RNI Aero’ iOS app for replicating aerochrome just from normal photos (it’s basically a filter but it’s very very close). I’m planning on doing a video on it soon :)

@@EddyMaynard Yess, I think it would be a very interesting challenge to see how close you can get to this old, but amazing film stock. Both from like an angle with this infrared approach or just editing normal photo's with an app.
It shouldn’t work. I’ve read and seen enough about how trichrome photography can be used to recreate aerochrome, and one filter can’t get there. Aerochrome worked by having different elements in the film react to different kinds of light, and using a heavy IR filter like this blocks a lot of the wavelengths needed for the aerochrome look.
That said.. theoretically it would be possible to have an aerochrome sensor. Nothing which could be done at home, but still. Instead of green, red, and blue filters in a standard Bayer or XTrans sensor, each pixel could have either an IR-only filter, a yellow/green filter that blocks IR, or a red filter which blocks IR. That could then be demosaiced like any other digital image.
So wait we need a filter???????? I was hoping it was straight from the camera.
The files are straight from the camera with no editing or computer manipulation at all, but to only be able to capture the infrared light and not the visible light you need the filter that cuts out the visible light.
Filter is about £50 (or cheaper on ebay) vs £400/500 infrared conversion that you’d have to do with most other cameras!

@@EddyMaynardthere are cheap filters on Amazon that have non-name brand, work just as good. I'd say the other filfer VS modified camera is that the modified camera is also capable of shooting IR videos, and you no longer need to deal with high iso or tripod.
I also have seen on another channel that if you set your custom white balance to something green like the grass of a garden or the trees of a mountain you can achieve better results.
@@williamaungleyraud I’ve not checked out the other ones on Amazon but if they have a 720nm cut they *should* do the same thing. Feel free to get one and experiment! I just got a HOYA one because I’ve used their filters before and know they’re good.
I experimented a lot with white balance and found the one on the recipe to be the best, it is heavily tinted towards green, but again, the fun is in the experimenting so don’t just take my word for it, have a play around and see what you can achieve 😊
And yes modifying a camera does have advantages but you’d need a dedicated camera for it, and have to sacrifice normal shooting.
@@EddyMaynard I could be wrong on the brand name, but I belive Kase makes internal filters and one of the is an IR filter mande to make your converted camera into a normal camera. The filter seats between your lens and the shutter blades, I'm not too sure but perhaps they also have a more traditional screw-on filter.
That I remember it wasn't a particular cheap filter in terms of price, but it was made so IR shooters could use their full spectrum cameras as regular cameras when desired 😎👍👍
Sorry! I can be a tad stupid but what is the Fuji secret? Any camera will work with an IR filter. So this video is totally misleading. You are saying there is a secret Fuji way to do something and then you say go get a filter, with no mention of this amazing Fuji secret! Are all your videos this misleading or is it just this one?
Hey Paul, the secret is that the fuji has a much weaker IR filter than most cameras so you can shoot infrared much easier, try it compared to a sony camera such as an a7iii, the sony needs a MUCH longer exposure time and therefore can’t be used handheld. Using a longer exposure with the sony also means you’ll not be able to freeze stuff like trees swaying in the wind or clouds static in the sky. With a 30 sec exposure or more you’ll see motion blur in most things in nature.
The other advantage to the fuji is the built in film sims and recipes, so you can get great looking images straight from the camera. With most other cameras, you need to edit in post to get the same look.
Apologies if you found it misleading, I didn’t think people would take the whole ‘secret’ bit so literally. I just make TH-cam videos for fun and there’s a disclaimer half way through the vid saying the info may not all be scientifically accurate. I’m just a guy with a TH-cam channel that found out my fuji cam could do something cool, and thought people would enjoy trying something new. Thanks for watching anyway :)
Don't appreciate the super click bait title. My Fujifilm camera isn'r x-trans therefore can't do this.
It’s not ONLY x trans cameras, some others do it too, try pointing your camera at a tv remote and pressing a button, if you can see the light at the top through the camera, then it can shoot infrared to some degree :)
