Myth: All "Orchids will burn under direct sunlight." Now, I don't go putting my phals outside, but they do benefit a lot from direct morning to noon sun on my east-facing windowsil. My neos, dendrobiums, and cattleya-type orchids enjoy being outside on my front porch where they get direct sun until about 12pm. I know the breeze also keeps their foliage cool when the sun is strong.

Loved the Vid Danni. One of the best sources of calcium is oyster shells. Many people use oyster shell to help chickens lay eggs with thicker shells. It costs very little, and sold by the pound at your local farm supply. By nature, oyster shells are ground up into small flecks so that chickens can digest them better. Just a suggestion, but it would be a good experiment to use oyster shell, ground up, and use them as calcium. It doesn't cost much,, about fifty cents USD american for a full pound, and the shells you get normally have some powder on them. you can put them in a sifter, run cold water over them, no more than a pint or max a quart, and pour the water over them a few times to get as much shell in the water as you can Grind them a little finer with a hammer or rock and repeat the process. Cheap way of getting calcium for orchids.

Loved this video! Could you do a video on heat damage on orchid leaves please? There’s currently a heatwave in the uk and I left my orchid outside thinking that it would enjoy the sun but the leaves have gone a weird grey colour and wrinkly in the centre.. so I’m thinking heat damage but not 100% sure, the roots are very healthy btw. Thanks!

Hi, is it true that when phalaenopsis is not getting enough light, it grows big leaves in order to collect as much UV light as possible in dark environment? Also, do you believe that garlic water really boosts immune system of orchid and can be perfect fertiliser?

Thank you for talking about the Phalaenopsis Chlorotic Spot Virus! I had/have the same signs on some orchids from a specific nursery, other people told me it could be calcium/magnesium deficiency, but adding more calmag did not stopped that spotting. After looking it up now at least I can be sure I did nothing wrong with the plants. I guess I have to trash the other two ones as well and replace them with healthy Phals? :(

I love your videos!! Please make a video regarding the care of orchids with pendulous canes! How pot them/water them, where to put them and how to deal
With the long canes! I just bought an anosmum and I want to give it the best chance I can!
Also question 2: When it comes to light direction does it have to come from above? I have a great shelf next to my window for plants but it might be a little high and they might get hit by the sun mostly from below, is that going to be enough light for a low light Phal? Can they only photosynthesize when the light comes from above?
Thank you so much! I watch your videos everyday!

Hay Danny how about the myth that phalaenopsis need a stress object to trigger blooming.😒

Hi Danni, (hope I'm spelling your name right) are the systemic insecticide granuels ok to use on Orchids?

RE: Eggshells: the thing is, we're often using acidic mediums (peat, sphag) and if the fertilizer solution you use is in on the acidic side (5.5-6.5 ideally), then it does break down the egg shells. A lot of limestone plants get their calcium from rain (acidic) running over limestone, and actually live in acidic media. I have a few limestone growing begonia that were pale and sad til I added eggshells as a quick fix.

What's the best way to make an Phalaenopsis orchid bloom? I bought mine about 4-5 years ago when it had flowers, since then it has never grew spikes even once. I try to keep my house around 72 F during day and 65 F at nights (summers become a lot hotter than that since I don't have an AC. Probably around 80ish during day and 70ish at nights). It was looking very health otherwise. Was... because I put it in my garage thinking the temperature -was around 65ish F in my garage- would be better for it around a week ago, but for some reason it suddenly almost died, it was doing good one day then a day later I found it with its leaves almost transparent, I'm guessing not enough sunlight. It dropped all its leaves but one, but luckily I managed to make it survive. I was wondering what else I can try to make it bloom, without killing it :(

Based on similar myths, I think this one is also false but I saw it recently and it peaked my interest: coffee grounds are good for orchids because they are rich in nutrients and can help the plant to bloom and grow quicker

Orchid's roots need to dry before the next watering.
