  • In this video we look at all the steps to flash firmware to FrSky's modern receivers. This covers the X series and newer, including Archer and R9. In fact, any receiver that has a SmartPort connection, or can use over the air (OTA) updates.
    First we look at the firmware options. We look at picking the right firmware for your receiver, where to download it, and bust the myth about ACCST versions 1 and 2. You know, the one that it will stop D8 working if you have it currently.
    After that, we look at how to get the firmware on to your transmitter. Followed by the flashing process for both OpenTX and ETHOS.
    By the end of this video, you should be able to flash any current FrSky receiver, as well as some older ones.
    Apologies for the HD version not being available yet. TH-cam has been processing it for almost 3 hours (started around 3pm GMT). Hopefully it will be ready for you all soon.

    Wires, wires and wires…. How do you hook up wires to flash RX from X20s. Cant bid and upgrade from early Accst to V2 unless you are bound…. But you can’t bind until you upgrade firmware…. Wires, wires, wires.
    PS: great tutorial. Like the very detail ETHOS flick. Us old flyers don’t know all the windows things. How and when to plug, unplug…. You know, so simple it’s just what you do. But not what we do…

      Just 1 cable (3 wires) 😄 S.Port on the receiver to the S.Port plug on the top of the X20S. ACCST needs to be updated via cable anyway. It’s only ACCESS that supports OTA.

    First of all thank you for the great work you are doing here! I recently got my X18S and setup everything thanks to your videos.
    I was not able to do one thing - flash the FAS40 ADV current sensor with the current firmware. I was wondering if I should have it connected to the S.Port of the receiver (GR8) or to the transmitter S.Port directly? Do I have to power it externally? I cannot see in Ethos any place where the TX S.Port is accessed. I understand that when selecting the firmware file in the file manager it should allow me to flash through S.Port but it doesn't give this option. I think a video about using the S.Port of the TX would be generally interesting, to know what it can be used for.

    Quick question, when updating an Archer receiver OTA, does it have to be registered first? Or can you pull a receiver out of the package and do an OTA update without needing to go through the registration process?

    Good Morning. Just received my X20S. Thanks to your videos I was able to perform all software updates on the tx. and five receivers. I'm doing my best to answer my own questions through experimentation and research. But ,from time t time, I need to ask an expert. So. What voltage setting needs to be adjusted to the transmitter battery ? What should the display show as far as the correct battery voltage ?

    • @MrD
      @MrD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome Frank, hope you’re happy with the radio. As far as the battery goes, all I did was use a multimeter to check the LiPo voltage. I compared this with the pack voltage in System > Battery. I just corrected that to the value on the multimeter, erring on the side of caution. Other than that, it’s as it came.

    Hi Darren, one more question if I may. Do you know what type of connector goes into the port of the R8 Pro where the AIN2 and F.Port connects in the front? It has a 0.8mm pin pitch, which is the same as a JST-SUR, but the housing does not seem to match.

    HI Thank you for the video I'm new to Fr Sky and im trying to flash a R8 Pro with a Taranis x9D+2019, ive had this radio a while but never managed to get it to work, the Error "firmware update error device not responding" comes up when i try to flash it using the pins art the back through the smart port or Subus. Would really appreciate your help as I'm totally stuck.

    • @MrD
      @MrD  ปีที่แล้ว

      Be careful when using the pins on the back of the radio. They are in a different order to a regular SPORT socket (th-cam.com/video/9tncdNDinFM/w-d-xo.html). In the manual, it looks like the X9D Plus 2019 has an SPORT socket inside the battery bay. So it may be worth trying that (www.frsky-rc.com/wp-content/uploads/Downloads/Manual/X9DP2019/X9D%20Plus%202019%20X9D%20Plus%20SE%202019%20-Manual.pdf). Though in the manual there is no reference to the pin order. I would imagine it is a normal SPORT/servo order. But worth checking with a multimeter first.
      On the R8Pro its self. You need to use the white connector, next to the antennae. Using the SmartPort, power, and ground wires.
      Let me know how you get on.

    • @olitography
      @olitography ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The output in the JR bay should definitely work. But just make sure the wire order is correct. Occasionally, the receivers take a couple of attempts to flash them.

    I’ve recently purchased an X20S and a bunch of different Archer receivers. Although each receiver came with an S.Port cable none of them were fitted with a servo connector - just bare wires. Two thoughts: 1) could be to save money 2) most likely, it’s because the pin order can vary depending on where you plug it in, so they are making the user fit the plug, so it is there mistake if they get it wrong.

    • @MrD
      @MrD  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the receiver you buy. Some are very small. So not having the pins installed gives you the option to direct solder to the receiver to take up less space in the model.

      The same way as you flash the ACCESS receivers. OTA would be the first method to try. Or cable if that fails.

    Love the T-shirt! Y'all listen to ZZTop way over there? (Writing this from Texas, USA - home of ZZTop).
    Getting back on-topic: I used to be a FrSky fan, but their ecosystem is such a mess now. I'm really thinking ExpressLRS is the future.
    Thanks for the video!

    • @MrD
      @MrD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, ZZ Top are awesome. It was sad to hear of the passing of Dusty Hill. I'm grateful I saw them live when I had the chance.
      As for FrSky's ecosystem. I kind of disagree. It was getting quite messy. But, I think recently it's become a lot more straightforward. If you can, use ACCESS. If not, use ACCST v2. That way you always just download the latest firmware and there are no dramas.
      I know a lot of people will probably disagree with me here. But I'm not a fan of ExpressLRS at the moment. Firstly, it does have great packet consistency, which is awesome. Consistency is more important than latency in my view. But the latency on ELRS is good also.
      However, it is far to limited in what you can do with it. Only having 4 full resolution channels is a no deal from me straight away on a lot of models. Instantly that means no smooth pan and tilt or no variable flaps/crow if you want them. The channels that are on offer are also limited in positions. I could probably just about get away with using, but I still feel like I could be held back. Especially when there is also only 12 channels. This already limits me on some Crossfire builds. However, you remove those aspects, and the performance would be no better than R9 ACCESS, Crossfire, Tracer, or Ghost; depending on the frequency used.
      I may try it on 2.4GHz one day. But it would be limited to small or basic models. I don't really see me using it on 900MHz. R9 and Crossfire are more than enough on that already. And if more range is what is wanted, I feel stepping to 433MHz with something like DragonLink would be the better way to go.

    • @sgilb9471
      @sgilb9471 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting! I admit that I have not actually used ELRS yet. I just really dislike how each vendor is trying to lock customers into their particular ecosystem, and things like FrSky preventing Radiomaster from selling D16 compatible receivers - so I really like the idea of a vendor-neutral control link. The docs for ELRSv2.0 (which I don't believe is available yet) refer to a "widehybrid" mode which provides 6 or 7 bit resolution for all of the aux channels. Still only 12 channels. 6/7-bit resolution is quite a bit lower than 10-bit, and might not be smooth enough for camera control, but would probably be more than adequate for flaps. Personally, I've never had a problem with 50Hz refresh rate, so these "low latency" 250 or 500 Hz rates aren't of much value to me. It seems possible that they could implement a "50Hz, high resolution on all channels" mode. We'll see.

    • @MrD
      @MrD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, isn't that what all manufacturers who develop their own products do? You won't find Sony making an XBOX controller. The RadioMaster thing I hear a lot. But at the end of the day, they are trying to sell a cloned receiver. I personally think they've got away with some things pretty well already. The TX16S is basically the sister radio to the Jumper T16. The original T16 was a clone of the Horus X10. You could use the X10 firmware on the T16. So I can understand it when a company takes exception to getting ripped off. Though FrSky weren't 100% innocent in the past. The X9D had a clone JR case and was based internally on another radio. Can't remember the name of it now. If those companies had taken exception with FrSky, I would have understood too. But also, FrSky have put a lot back in to the hobby, most notably with OpenTX development in the past.
      I'm of two minds with the open source control link. My problem isn't necessarily the firmware side. But, the hardware could be made by anybody, to varying levels of quality. I guess this will come out in the reviews. I have looked a bit more in to ELRS, and it does seem like they are open to having a higher latency version in the future, with more full resolution channels. The other thing that I did see is that the ELRS systems aren't completely compliant with regulatory domain frequencies. LBT is the closest, but none are 100%. I know some people don't care about the legality. But, I'm more concerned about other frequencies being interfered with. Maybe this is also something that will be addressed in the future. I'm open minded. I actually have a 2.4GHz set on the way, as I need to test with it. But I think that this won't be for me yet. Maybe in the future.

      You can get access to channels 9 and 10. I’ll have this in an upcoming video. But basically it’s in the receiver options (click the receiver name, near the bind button). But, if you want more than 10, you may need to use something like an SBUS breakout board. That can be set to give you channels 9 to 16.

I'll take a look and see if there are any options on the receiver that might cause issues. But if it was working before, I can't see why it wouldn't now. Especially if it's just been re-registered and bound to a different transmitter.

      It's actually pretty simple and there are a few ways you can do this. Either use a Y cable and plug them both into the same port on the receiver. Or, when you set up a new model, select "2 channels" under the elevator option and you will now have two separate channels. You can also get into some more advanced mixing and use them as "tailerons" if you'd like which I think Darren might already have a video on.

    Hello Mr.D, i have an question. I'am using butterfly but can't get an curve (5pt) on the movement of the elevator. Do you have an solution?

    • @MrD
      @MrD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For elevator compensation? You wouldn’t put the curve on the elevator. You would make a free mix using the same source as the butterfly, and output it to the elevator channel. You can then add the curve to that free mix, as well as set the weight.

      Tandem and ACCESS in general get the region automatically from the transmitter module. When you buy your receiver. It will have the appropriate receiver for the region. FCC is 915MHz and LBT is 868MHz. If you buy a receiver in the UK. The antenna will be correct for 868MHz.

      In there you will find the RX9R_ACCST_2.1.0_FCC.frk file that you need to update the receiver. This is for the latest ACCST v2. If you're still on ACCST v1, use this link www.frsky-rc.com/wp-content/uploads/Downloads/Firmware/RX8R/FW-RX8R-170224.zip

      Thanks Mal. Yes, you can use ACCST v2. You just need to select the FRSKY X2 protocol when you bind. Should you is up to you. Personally I would. It's worth it when you compare the time to perform the update, to the peace of mind that a pretty big bug has been fixed.

      You should have no problem at all with that one. I have a G-RX8 running on ACCST v2 and it works perfectly. If you’ve not used that receiver before, just be mindful when you bind it. By default, pin 8 is set to SBUS OUT. If you want to use Ch7 and/or 8 for servos or a motor, you need to jumper the signal pins for Ch 1 & 2 while you bind.

    I can't get this ESC to calibrate, when I plug the battery in with inav slider on full throttle nothing happens, I just keep getting the no signal beep. I've tried using my controller as well, same thing acting like it's not getting a signal. There are two sets of wires coming out of the ESC, one has 2 wires red and black, the other has 3 wires regular servo connector. I'm confused on which one is the signal wire but I tried both of them anyways and still did not have any luck I'm almost to the point of just buying a different ESC, this is the last thing holding the build back from starting testing.

    • @MrD

    Will you do a video please on using Tandem x20s and registering a R-XSR receiver and then binding it and also making sure its in right mode. I would assume that the I-flight Nazgul5 v2 digital that i bought with the R-XSR fcc receiver uses s.bus mode and also uses access on Transmitter internal module. But when i click register, then hold f/s button down then power quad up it does absolutely nothing and i feel like blowing through my front door full sprint right now. lol . Frustrating shit and no videos.

    • @MrD
      @MrD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, if you have the ACCESS firmware on the R-XSR, it should just register and bind like any other ACCESS receiver. It sounds like you are doing the procedure correctly. So are you 100% sure it has the ACCESS firmware on it? If not, it would be worth flashing it with ACCESS to be sure. If you’ve not flashed it, it probably has ACCST v2.x firmware installed. You could always try binding as ACCST. If that works, it’s 100% firmware.
      I use an R-XSR on my demo flight controller. Because of the nature of what I use it for, I’ve registered and bound it quite a few times. There was nothing special going on. It was just flashed with the ACCESS firmware, then registered (failsafe button held when powered on), and bound (just a power cycle). I have it set up using SBUS and SmartPort.
      I guess by mode, you’re meaning SBUS or F.Port? With ACCESS, that’s a receiver option that you can set after you’ve bound. With ACCST it is different firmwares. To find out, you should be able to find out the protocol in the flight controller configurator. iNav it will be on the receiver page.
      Let me know how you get on with the firmware.
