    I grew up in a very small town & we were lucky enough to have our own theater. It was billed as *_"Yog Monster from Space."_* I saw this on a Saturday Afternoon Matinee . Me and all the neighborhood kids counted our change, walked to the theater & had an absolute blast! So much that we did the same thing a week later. I still love this film & it will always be one of my favorites. Great review!!

    When there was talk of a follow-up to GMK: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, I had hopes that the monsters of Space Amoeba would get dusted off for a seafood-platter sequel. Alas, not only did the sequel never happen, Kamoebas' mutilated corpse is given a cameo in Tokyo SOS.
    Space Amoeba's okay, but that subplot about the native girl desperate to wed Rico while he's in shock after one of the monsters' attacks and incapable of making decisions for himself is absolutely squicky.

    ALWAYS loved THIS one!! Saw the first import version, YOG, MONSTER FROM SPACE, in U.S. theaters as a kid growing up in the 70's when I was beginning to really understand how these movies were made. Gezorah fascinated me SO much back then because, as a boy watching this in a theater, I kept wondering HOW in the hell they got somebody inside that 'suit-thing'!! Gezorah became a favorite kaiju of mine! By the way, in Japan, the filmakers later made comments about THIS one NOT quite living up to the Toho 'fright' standards of the time among Japanese audiences because these big 'dangerous' monsters were too much like their similar species' that are also food in Japan! So Japanese audiences, they say, got hungry watching THESE kaiju on the big screen, if nothing else!

    All of the kaiju in this film are heavily underrated, with Ganimes being the most prejudiced. At least Kamoebas showed up in Tokyo SOS and Gezora got a lot of comic attention, but Ganimes never got the love that (I think) he deserved.
    Oh, you were talking about the film? Uhh....I guess it's alright.

    • @scado5679
      @scado5679 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Gappasaurus he's just trying to hide the fact that he's actually a giant shrimp. Eliminating the competition seems to be Ebirah's best strategy.

    • @scado5679
      @scado5679 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Frizzurd there is one scene in GvsE where Ebirah's mouthparts are shown (where he eats a bunch of natives) and it's pretty creepy. However, Ganimes is definitely much gnarlier and creepier with his mouthparts. He really is an improvement over Ebirah.

    Since that's the last of the Showa era Toho kaiju movies (I think) I have a suggestion.

    Both movies are pretty much the same plot. Doing a Gorgo review, then a Gappa review, and then a video comparing and contrasting the two films would be awesome!

    • @Gappasaurus

      Technically there’s still Human Snow Beast (aka Half-Human) but not sure it qualifies as it’s never gotten a home video release, even in Japan ☹️ But also Daigoro vs Goliath and Orochi the Eight-Headed Dragon 🐲🐲🐲🐲🐲🐲🐲🐲 Plus there’s additional “sci-fi movies that also have giant monsters” like Gorath and Latitude Zero. And lots of human-sized-monster Toho films too 🤔
      But a comparison of Gorgo and Gappa would be cool too, plus maybe mention how Mothra 1961 has nearly the same plot 😅

    I always referred to Space Amoeba as the “Last Hurrah of the Toho Regulars.” Not only are the main cast Toho actors we’ve seen multiple times during the Showa Era, but so are minor characters such Sachio Sakai (the editor) and Yū Fujiki (the promotional manager, with bow-tie), who go back to respectively Godzilla (1954) and King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962). Perhaps it’s just me, but it’s almost sad to see these actors in this okay but average film, when Toho was LONG past the Glory Days.

    I was about 11 or 12 first time I saw this. I'd been a Godzilla/Kaiju fan since the age of 6, collected all sorts of monster magazines back in the day. I knew enough about TOHO films at that point to recognize so many of the regular TOHO actors who'd appeared in the Godzilla films over the years, so I'd always enjoyed this film as a decent TOHO venture. Only years later did I realize that this was the last time we'd see most of these core TOHO actors, the director and the music composer all together in one feature. It carries a special place in my heart fr these reasons. Fun film, and loved Kenji Sahara in the slimy role of Obadah.

      I can't think of any other Showa Toho kaiju movie, so I guess it's basically confirmed at this point. Although Gorath isn't really a kaiju film.

      There’s still Human Snow Beast (aka Half-Human) but not sure it qualifies as it’s never gotten a home video release, even in Japan ☹️ But also Daigoro vs Goliath and Orochi the Eight-Headed Dragon. Plus there’s additional “sci-fi & fantasy movies that also have giant monsters” besides Gorath, like Latitude Zero and The Three Treasures. And lots of human-sized-monster Toho films too 🤔

    You mentioned that the monsters were all copies of others. I'm assuming you mean Gamera for the turtle, Ebirah for the crab - but what do you consider Gezora to be derivative of? The unnamed octopus from Kong vs Godzilla, or something else?

      The octopus appeared in Frankenstein vs Baragon too, so it may have had enough notoriety to be the template 🤔

    Can you take a look at American monster movies mainly ones like THEM!, The Monster that Challenged the World, and 20 Million Miles to Earth

      Those are 3 great old American movies. Loved all 3, with "Them" probably being the best. "The Monster that Challenged the World" is also a favorite of mine. I still get that one confused with "The Monster that Conquered the World", with the squatty little monster in the cave. I recall Peter Graves and the not so famous, Lee Van Cleef, before he played the BAD man in "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. I must have seen just about every 50's science fiction and creature mutated from the bomb movie that ever made it to the screen. At times, I even watch many of the Corman flicks. From "Creature from the Haunted Sea" to "Beast from Haunted Cave", and everything in between. At any rate, the 3 you mentioned were awesome, plus they were only better when the folks from, Mystery Science Theater 3k hosted them.I must admit that "Manos, the Hands of Fate" was on the lower end. Loved the creature from the crack in the Salton Sea floor, which turned into, "The Creature that Challenged the World". It also started the underrated, Tim Holt from "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", which is in top 10 all time favorite movies. There are just so many, like "Mesa of Lost Women" which are almost so crummy that they are good. "Frankenstein meets the Space Monster" along with anything that has to do with genetic experiments gone awry, is simply awesome. By the way, you gotta love, "20 million miles to Earth", but there are so many, as in "The Lost World" from the silent age, plus "Nosferatu in the same era, but those don't even scratch the surface of the fantastic choices we have. Great stuff, indeed...

    I really like this movie, not the best, but pretty good. Can’t go wrong with crabs, cuttlefish, and a turtle mutated by a alien single cell organism.
