I’m Australian. I saw a short reel on instagram and was very intrigued. Researched the song, know the history, the composer, found a translation with footnotes, and several cover versions. I don’t know anything about the context of this video, however, these young men, and possible scallywags, have given us such an amazing cover which communicates perfectly the joy and pride that this song represents. I can’t get this song out of my head. I can’t comprehend how iTunes doesn’t have this exact version. This version of the song precisely knocks it for six! Well done!
Appreciate the effort kuzi. If you're ever over these ways let us know, we'll have a feed and a young inu if you dont mind indulging in a 'quiet drink' 😂😂 chur batha
When I first watched this on instagram it made me cry of happiness! It’s one of my favourite songs now. I am a white and Māori Australian but I don’t have the Māori culture. Videos like these make me feel like I’m going to a home that I wasn’t able to get but I’m grateful to finally find it.
Here you go for those who asked... Ka Pīoioi Ka pīoioi e Tohu aroha hau kāinga E hoki mai rā Kia kite atu i tō iwi e. E rotarota ana E katakata ana mai rā. Pūkana whētero mai I te ihi ā ō mātua. Kia kite atu ano I tō ataahua ai kanapa rā Pupuhi ai e te hau Kapohia āku roimata. Ka pīoioi e tohu aroha hau kāinga. AND translation This swaying dance shows the love of your home-town people. You've come back home, to see your people. There is gesturing and laughing with joy at your return, Eyes popping and tongues thrusting from the energy of those performing. I see again your beauty gleaming there caressed by the wind, and my tears are snatched away. This fluttering dance shows your home-town people's love... YOU'RE WELCOME!!
Amazing vibes, amazing energy and voices from the heart, the joy and the love that you get from this is wonderful. Thank you ❤ (brought tears of joy to my eyes) spread peace and love.
I have watched this video on repeat for so long now after finding it on TikTok. I'm Aussie and still haven't searched what the words mean but there is something about Maori culture that just hits. They all have such insanely good voices naturally and the harmonies and energy in this particular video are awesome. Good stuff!
