Homelessness crisis: Couple builds tiny home along I-5 on-ramp in Seattle

- Clustered along I-5 and I-90 corridors in Washington state, 2,221 homeless camps are now on WSDOT right-of-ways, according to the department's latest survey. And, long-term structures like the ones off of the Mercer St. exit in Seattle now appear in more than half of them. More permanent structures allow the risks for WSDOT to pile up: hypodermic needles are the most common danger, followed by human waste and biohazards. Workers who come to the camps have been threatened with violence and there is increased risk to motorists.

There is a HUGE difference between being homeless and being a drug addicted, drug selling individual.
Do you help those who actually are homeless and not addicts, alcoholics, or criminals? Do tell what you do besides wish them well?

Yes there need to be more of those but also the lack of reasonable pay is a huge factor in this. Most of us are one catastrophe away from being homeless. I know. I almost died 3 years ago in a car crash. Wasn't my fault but he had no insurance. I had to sell my house and move back in with my folks at 40. Thank God my parents have a big house.
How about get ride of exclusionary zoning and let developers build housing that people need like, not just large single family homes with large yards and white picket fences

@@Bee-tj8gc hahahaha!!! There is nobody in this country that has to be homeless while working full time. Even at the bare minimum wage of $7.25 per hour that's $290 per week or $1,160 per month. Two minimum wage workers could put their money together and get an apartment. That's $2,320 per month. More than enough to have an apartment and food every month. Average rent in the u.s is about $1,100 per month. Two homeless people with full time minimum wage jobs could pay that rent and still have a thousand left to spend on food and utilities. But they gotta buy their cigarettes, liquor and drugs with that money so they can't get an apartment.
In states with minimum wages over $15 per hour there's absolutely no reason a full time worker should be homeless. That's $600 per week or $2,400 per month. If you can't afford a one bedroom apartment that costs $750 per month on your $2,400 per month salary then you're spending your money on stuff you shouldn't be.
Drug addicts need addiction treatment before they need a nice apartment.

Not everybody is an addict. I'm not homeless anymore but I was ran away 14 years old because of the abuses I was forced through at home. DRUGS WASNT MY GOAL(IT WAS SUI).It happens to alot of kids who tried to reach out for help at schools and was told it's supposed to be that way. I can't run straight and I'm dripping blood from my rear but your just fine as they grab your neck and drag you to class. I didn't use drugs I was a wild animal locked in a basement for ten years sold to who ever had the most rocks in the pipe, like any wolf who's been caged finds out the school can't stop you from running. You'll take the opportunity and run.

Homeless camps need to be all cleared out. Homeless people need to be put into shelters, rehab, job training, etc. People in the communities need to be safe, and rampant criminal activity cannot be allowed.
Demand better elected officials.
In the meantime, it seems there is nothing neighborhoods CAN do to prevent or clean up the endless dumping of "found" things at encampments. I tried reporting it to the city, the response I got was that if the city cleans it up, more will be dumped and it would become a regular thing. ? I don't get their logic. The city NEEDS regular cleanup.

Women and children are often raped and abused in shelters. Most women won't go to shelters because sleeping outside is safer.

If you don't own a home 100% outright then you are technically homeless. When you are paying rent and mortgage, once you lose your source of income for whatever reason you will become homeless.

I'm not surprised. Drug abuse causes horrible situations and criminal activity. There needs to be Accountability for their actions. If they won't accept the help offered, put them in work camps.

Try to place drug addicts and severely mentally people in long term housing and you get a worse mess than what these people live like on the streets, because you put them in close proximity to working class citizens who don't deserve that craziness in their area. They destroy property, steal, and bring violence wherever they are. Politicians can only talk on this subject they will never deliver a real solution.
The sad part is Seattle keeps these elected officials in office! The rest of the state wants them out!

Wow lawlessness off backs of taxpayers who actually pay to build on their own property. Add any building, roof etc to any building on your own land in WA state & you'll be getting a big fine.!
