Was it Ben who decided to take this version down on gems on VHS or the gems on VHS guy? Regardless, that video was my favorite, I think I listen to it about once a day while playing along with it. There is so much soul in this version, and you see it in their facial expressions. It was visual art, not just music. To deny art because it has connections to the Confederacy is to deny reality. You don't have to agree with the views in order to let it exist. Cancel culture should not be canceling culture, instead we should stop perpetuating negativity, let's celebrate our past, the good bad and bloody. History will be doomed to repeat itself if it is forgotten.
@@mischief.brewed @kracker My comment is a year old, yall didn't comment until Anthony made his post about removed content, so your explanations are late and unoriginal. Anthony and I had a decent dialog about it. But, thanks for trying to answer my question, even if it was late and smug, we'll leave it at that.
@@bouch2442 imagine thinking Southerners were the only racist people to ever exist. imagine thinking that you're supposed to be ashamed of your culture because 150 years ago 3% of your ancestors participated in something bad.
Glad to hear BT doesn’t side side with racism. Which means when they made the video for this song it had no racist intentions. Which means they removed the video simply to avoid false accusations. Massive loss of respect....
I really don't get why it was taken down. It' very clearly a love song. There's literally a single mention of the "Union Army," and no other reference to the confederacy or whether he supported or even cared about either side's cause. Seems like he was forced to go to war but would rather have stayed with his girl in Georgia. What's polarizing about a love story like this? Was somebody offended? I don't see how that could have been the case. On the other hand, I think the love story has probably touched a lot of people. Thankfully, this audio is the live version from that video.
@@ryanthompson1806 I agree with you. When I read Ben's statement about taking content down that glamorized the Confederacy I crossed my fingers that this song wouldn't be a part of that. I think he just wanted to distance himself from anything racist, which was the right move, but I felt that this song was enough of a love ballad that he could make an exception. I guess not. Now that I've found where this performance is preserved (Thank you Jonathan Pruegert!) I'm proud of Ben and the gang for doing the right thing.
He had an Instagram post a little while ago. It was quite lengthy, explaining his perspective on social justice, and frankly I was pleasantly surprised by how committed he was to his positioning. He said that he would be taking down all content related to the confederacy. He didn’t say this song was racist.
Tis a shame, but I respect their decision. At least we still have the audio for now, and hopefully they'll re-upload the vid when things calm down because it truly is a beautiful and moving performance. I also agree with what the above comments said, there's nothing in it that is racist or glorifying the confederacy, it's just a tragic love song.
She is so good playing violin, surely a gift from God.
Thank you so much for posting this version!! I was heartbroken when they took down the video
Thank you for keeping this gem man ... most who fought where under 25 and owned no one and to be honest I would fight now for them look at this

Couldn't have said it better myself.
It was Ben, he requested it be taken down. He is not cancelable.
Ben requested it be taken down. There's no cancel culture about it so maybe leave it at that.

This was the first song I heard from lost dog and is still a favourite
It’s a damn shame the video has fallen to recent events/PC culture
It went down cause Ben wanted it down lmao. Has nothing to do with PC.
I don't understand

Definitely one of my favorites from you guys, not to mention by anybody. Great stuff Ben

What happened to the version with them playing together?? This is ok but i liked seeing them with their instruments!
Make sure you save this version guys, I am pretty sure GemsOnVHS took this down because they felt it was 'racist'
