Nice setup Peter, I have, as a pro TV person, criticized your lighting a long while ago, to which responded positively. This is looking GREAT and the backdrop even better. Keep it up. I will continue watching your insightful channel. Have a great 2025 Go Bokke!!
The problem with the handling errors is in windy and wet conditions the back line plays must be closer for shorter passes and we are not doing that we stik too long passes and missing the accuracy potentially in that conditions we must adapt to the conditions of the day.Keep it up very good video 👌👍👍🏆
Yes, good point, Christo. It'd be interesting to see how often we encountered wet conditions in 2024. I'm immediately reminded of that Test in Perth where it was pouring down! Thank you for the compliments!
That's another good one. I'd say the reason I didn't include it is because I feel that if everyone is fit, then we've got Pollard and Sacha and that's pretty solid. But you're quite right, after those two we are not in good shape.
my worst is when we don't protect attacking ruck ball. The new law variation giving better protection to the scrumhalf might actually benefit our more attacking gameplan under Brown
There you go...I have being telling you for a while to spruce up your channels visuals. Your content is really good. Glad to see you have stepped up to the new age . Still a way to go . Great start
Line outs - you are definitely right. Handling Errors - this has been & still is an area for improvement. Breakdown - we have been a lot better in previous years.
Thanks Dave. Yeah, I included breakdown only as a bonus discussion point because I didn't feel it deserved to be one of the big ones. We can certainly be better but I don't think it was a big problem compared to the other areas I mentioned. But that's just my opinion.
Thank you so much! I try to change it once a year and I think last year's change was a good one. Judging from the early reaction to the new look, it seems like a good choice!
Thank you, Nico. Yes, it's difficult to be critical of a team that won 11/13 and has won 21/24 since just before the World Cup but it's also fun to push this team to see just how brilliant they can be. Appreciate the kind words!
I fully agree about the handling errors Peter, but it happens mostly when players are doing things that are out their normal roles ? Better done in the year post World Cup year than the year before?
Quite right, David. And that's why I mentioned, like with the lineouts, I am accepting that there will be a few speedhumps as we change our style. Hopefully it will be much better in 2025!
@@frontrowrugbyI would very much like to believe that Rassie is always in contact with our “ Ex Boks” and taps into their knowledge and experience and most importantly from those who have done it? Those same Ex Boks, would give anything to be back in that jersey one more time! If they could give any tiny bit of encouragement, give belief, to impart knowledge and wisdom on to current generation They would be just as honoured to be able to give back in any way possible.
Yes, all about preserving the history and the culture. I know whenever they can for example they ask an ex-Bok to hand out the jerseys before a Test which is really cool.
My massive improvement would be if a max of 6 maybe 7 players who are above 30 would be part of the 2027 WC. I know that's a stretch. But the only time in now. For that evolution or we might have 80% of the same squad going into 2027, which is old. I know now it looks like they still got it by how they are playing now, but I'm not gonna have a problem if those players manage to come up with a 3rd and will be fitter for it. And the danger would be after 2027 when the majority of the squad retires.
Very good point you've raised. We have a lot of players that are going to be around 35 or even older come 2027 and not all of them will be able to make it. I'm sure Rassie has a plan ... this could be a good topic for a future video!
@frontrowrugby even for the players themselves, I am willing to bet that the majority of the double world cup winners deep down they are thinking of a last shot at a title. To be the first to win it 3 times in a row to be part of history. Hence, you would imagine they will be willing and making a sacrifice, making sure that their bodies are taken care of for that shot at a title by 2027. Hence, it's going to be hard for Rassie to make that decision of who to drop from 2023 WC. But what I'm imagining is that we will have to have a young hooker, center & winger. And prop too a replacement of kitshoff and probably malherbe (not sure of this one: but just in case, bcs I don't think Vincent K will make it). For loose forwards, we are already seeing the likes Cameron hanekom who needs more game time, etc... and fullback fassi really looking good in that position 👌.and Another thing that people Don't talk about a lot is that all our good locks will be old by 2027. De Jager, RG, Eben, mostert they are about the same age. We really need to invest in young locks. Like im just looking at now, RG has history of injuries, Eben has also been out, DJ is also in his return from injury for months. All this injuries for them are really raising a few eyebrows 😕. But we will cross that bridge when we get there, because at some point, experience is required somewhere.
The thing that made the line-out failures problematic was not so much the percentages, but the fact that most of the lineouts lost were almost always in the opposition's 22, or in the Boks' own 22. Especially on the opposition's 5m line, it got to the point where you just knew it was going to be an overthrow or stolen even before it happened. And similarly the number of silly handling errors, all of which speaks to a headspace / confidence issue - the Boks need to actually BELIEVE that they are "the undisputed heavyweight champions" that they are, because when they do, those passes and everything else will start to stick! Just ask that legendary All Blacks squad of 2011-2015, deep down they KNEW and embraced their apparent "invincibility" on the field, because if/when you believe it, that's 51% of the battle won! And yes, of course one must be wary of confidence turning into arrogance, that's a-given, but headspace is more often than not the difference between winning and losing in critical moments at the highest level! And the Boks do already have it to a degree - we wouldn't be back-to-back world champions if we didn't - but it is something they are going to have to seriously focus on if they intend on maintaining their current winning momentum. 🤘
Thanks Adam! No doubt one of the biggest differences between players as you go up the elite levels is the mental side of it. They're all very, very good at international level but what separates the men from the boys is that mental side of things. Self-belief is a massive thing. If you don't actually believe you are the best, then you'll probably never be the best. It's why I believe Scotland, Wales etc lose so often to South Africa and New Zealand. Even England to be honest. They have had a team capable of beating us many times over the years, they'll even lead going into the last 10 minutes and then they'll lose. Interesting story: In 1990 Scotland were touring New Zealand and going into the last 10 or so minutes the Scots were leading. The All Blacks had a penalty and while the Scots were gathered behind their posts one of the players said to the others, "I can't believe we're leading." That's the problem right there isn't it?
I appreciate that but I think it's almost impossible to determine luck. These guys are so incredibly skillful that what we might see as luck, is something that they just have the ability to pull off. Obviously if the ball bounces a certain way that can easily be determined as luck so what I'm saying isn't black and white if you know what I mean.
I'm not concerned there. I think Grant Williams and Handre Pollard are the first choices and with Cobus and Faf still around (I know Faf was mostly injured last year) I think we're okay. Then at 10 Sacha is there and so is Manie Libbok and Jordan Hendrikse. Decent depth I would say even if not everyone on the list is necessarily at the same level.
I agree , I don’t see a problem at half backs People think there are problems at 10 because they tend to associate a kicker with a No 10 which is not always the case I like Lubbock and Sasha because they get the ball moving which is what we come to see
Better place kicking (Sasha and Libbock). Fix our lineouts. Better ruck ball protection. Better attack finishing. More attacking fluidity. We're just not finishing off these creative plays. Fix these issues and the Boks will be near unstoppable in 2025.
I'd agree with Libbok on the place kicking but Sacha is an ace goal kicker. Percentage wise he is our best actually. Pollard is Mr Iceman but overall he is around 75-80% whereas Sacha is closer to 85% Agree with everything else! No doubt as the boys get more used to what Tony Brown is asking of them, and grow in confidence, the fluidity will come. How dangerous are we going to be then?
@@frontrowrugbyI was going to say Pollard had a tricky start in his kicking career but experience is what makes him the most reliable kicker in the country I usually ( out of respect ) not watch him kick since it’s almost guaranteed 2 or 3 points 😂
We keep talking about 51 players but how does that compare to previous years and to other nations? Positions? It'd hard for me to celebrate this 51 players without the comparisons.
I'd have to go and see if I can find numbers for you but I'd have to guess that the average international team might use 30-35 at the high end of the scale. 25-30 feels like a good average to me, especially for a settled side or a team that might not have great depth or options. What I do know is that Rudolf Straeuli handed 24 players debuts in 2002 so we could assume that 15-20 players from the year(s) before also featured that year so perhaps Straeuli's 02 squad is the closest we might find to the 51.
@@frontrowrugbyI think what makes this 51 players unique for me is the fact that it didn’t not adversely impact the balance of the team and the results , save for some of the points you make in this video If anything it created a nice problem for the coaching team and guaranteed continuity If we improve as you say on those points , the team will be devastating and that 17 game record will be taken apart
For sure! Yes, at times we looked a little disjointed or uneven but the results speak for themselves. A last minute drop goal and a last minute penalty is all that stopped us from winning 13 in a row last year. It's actually quite scary when you think of how good this team is ... and can still become!
